Wii U will run into the same branding issues presented with 3DS at launch
- Aug 15, 2012 9:56 pm GMT

You make a very good point. Now that you mention it, with Apple releasing a new product every year, the Wii U seems like just an add on to the Wii. Now I'm scared too. Let's just hope their marketing turns out well. - Aug 16, 2012 9:59 am GMT

This is my worry for the system. Nintendo has finally made some minimal efforts to differentiate their new portable from the DS but I still hear from every avenue at my disposal (unaware parents at retail stores, topics in less informed gaming and consumer forums) confusion with those who are not gamer enthusiasts.
Nintendo's new hardware does not proceed to us like Apple's products. Apple releases something every year. It names its products with numbers and letters. Apple's marketing is very simple and clear "this is the NEXT generation." With the Wii U and the 3DS their hardware looks too similar to the the previous systems and the names suggest more of an add-on rather than a whole new beast. Unlike "Super Nintendo" 3DS could be seen as a 3D version of the DS. The same thinking could be said with "WII U." I would venture to say Super Wii or Wii 2 would be more effective and ultimately more financially beneficial than their current name, ignoring the cheesiness behind that move.
Apple's numbering is only a new phenomanom since the iphone and ipad. ipods have never been sequelised before, they wer simply Ipod Touch, or Ipod Classic. It was their clearly different shape that gave it away. the genrational numbers (3rd or 4th) were usually on the accesories. as a retail salesperson, evryday people still get confused about Ipad2/3 situation (even more so here in australia we had the 3g/4g issue boil over). some people still think the Ipad 2 is the new one, and still call the NEW ipad the ipad 3 when in reality apple has actually switched back to generational numbering instead (so all our price tickets say New iPad, 3rd Gen).
the Wii U name is a blessing and a curse. it half invokes the idea of an addon, and half invokes the idea of a slightly upgraded model. But if Nintendo removes the Wii name all together, they risk losing the Wii Fit generation of customers who previously had no idea about video games prior to the Wii.
everyone, lets not forget the naming of earlier nintendos.....Nintendo---> SUPER nintendo------>Nintedo 64----->Gamecube------>Wii------> Wii U. now arguably the more popular nintendos have been the models with the easy to recoginse name. I personally feel that the gamecube was the larger failure of them all (me being the only one of my friends who owned one, and from launch date too).
Apple releases these products annually. Meaning on a specific set schedule. Just that idea alone makes their marketing more clear for consumers of what is new and what is old. Aside from that they already had other ways of showcasing that the new iPod is not just an add-on of the old iPod as you mentioned. Marking their generations, highlighting new game features, and making designs that were noticeably different in shape. - Aug 17, 2012 4:21 am GMT

name doesnt mean jack...if its good it will sell... all this 3ds confusion was made a big deal because the 3ds didnt succeed as expected.
playstaion1,2,3 is the stupidest name i ever heard and they succeeded...so it doesnt matter.
It's not about how "good" the name is, it's about how clear it is. Can't get easier then a 1,2,3. With WiiU, some people think it's a handheld, some people think it's a standalone tablet, some people think it's a Wii add on tablet, some people think it's a new console. Between the name and how they revealed it, it's a bit of a mess.
so...
we have the wii... the other is the wiiU.....just because they used a letter instead of a number now everyone is sooo confused? please..
wii,WiiU, WiiZ should be just as different as playstation1,playstation2, playstation3
the 3ds actually used a number..."3"DS and people were still confused. why? because it kept ds in the name? playstation did the same.
if its going to sell it will... if it wont it will be for other reasons.
name dont mean jack if you have a good product.

I can see lots of people who work on gaming stores having to explain to their customers what the Wii U actually is and how it is not an expansion or a new controller for the Wii.
Wii 2 would have been a far better option branding-wise.

even if it was called the nintendo revolution.... people would still ask...is this the next system?? or just some side project or a tablet made by nintendo?
people outside of gamespot are not knowledgable about this stuff.

It should be, but it isn't. WiiU isn't Wii2, and it isn't going to be as clear to some people. I wouldn't have expected people to be confused by the 3DS's name, but many were, and WiiU is in a very similar situation.
Yeah you don't have a clue what you're talking about. 1 -> 2 -> 3 is as simple as you can get. It's clearly the next in a sequence. Adding a "U" to the "Wii", with the new console looking almost identical to Wii, and emphasising this tablet controller. It's a mess, the huge casual Wii market WILL be confused. Hell, even a lot of "hardcore" gamers are a bit confused. Name don't mean jack? Yeah you won't be hired by a marketing dept. anytime soon  - Aug 18, 2012 6:33 am GMT
Hence the problem as kungfool69 has pointed out...that's the problem Nintendo has, they're too afraid to force a switch unlike Apple. If they were to completely remove DSi & Wii, then consumers would be force to buy 3DS/3DSXL & WiiU. There would be no confusion then, as there will be only 3DS/3DSXL & WiiU. :P

Actually I think the WiiU will run into the same issue as the Vita to be honest.
"360" was dumb as well. They only did it to avoid "Xbox 2 vs PS3". MS just put tons of marketing behind it. THey can afford to do dumb sh!t and have it suceed. BTW, deflecting the argument doesn't mean you win, care to respond instead of changing the subject? ;) Also, could you honestly abandon your whole "conspiracy" bullspit. THERE ARE NONE. And your logic doesn't compare to the logic of the vast majority of the public. They get confused easily. They really did just view the 3DS as a 3-D version of the DS. They still though you could play 3ds games on a ds but they would just be in 2-D. The 3ds wasn't the third iteration of the DS line, nintendo would have lessened confustion by calling it the Nintendo DS 2 and then advertising it had 3-D capabilities.
Playstation 1, 2, 3 are not bad names at all, they are sequential. Using a letter isn't sequential. Wii-U will just be seen as a HD Wii, and people will probobly think that Wii-U games will be played in standard def on a regular wii.
People respond better to numbers rather than letters. Even the New Ipad confuses many customers, and need to be explained the difference between the Ipad 2 and the "New" ipad.- Aug 22, 2012 11:46 am GMT

PS3 - God of War Ascension
360 - Halo 4
Wii - None
DS - None
Retro - Link's Awakening (GameBoy)
PC- None
Recently Finished - Zelda Skyward Sword, Super Metroid
Anticipated Purchases - NoneI absolutely agree. I made this same argument in an earlier thread a couple of weeks ago and got blasted for it. I'm glad to see by looking at the comments, that I'm definitely not the only one with this concern.
