I have lost 30 pounds since March with about 20 more to go and have for the first time In about 15 years become interested in walking and running and just getting out and about without being in a vehicle.

I really don't know what I need. Currently using a 3 year old pair of New Balance but after a mile or two they are super uncomfortable and pretty heavy it seems. I have a really wide foot which makes it hard to get shoes that are wide enough without having to buy a size too long.

If anyone who runs can make suggestions that would be great. I eyeballed my routes on GPS and all 3 of them are over 6 miles which I would like to do on a daily basis so take that into account.

I also want some form of performance measuring either via the shoe or an added mechanism of some kind. The pair of Nikes I have right now use a small chip in the sole and an app for the iphone but Ive never bothered using it and I don't know if it is something only Nike offers.

Absolute maximum price is $200 ( counting having the ability to record/log performance either with the shoe or otherwise ) but would love to be around $150.

Its just hard to tell whats decent in a sea of gimmicky space bubble cushion sole astronaut looking shoes.

Is there a store in your area that is dedicated to selling running shoes? I would go there and avoid big chain stores. Those smaller shops will take the time and get you a shoe that fits and supports your feet perfectly.

^This. I just got a new pair of running shoes like two months ago, and instead of buying them by myself like I usually do, I went and got myself fitted. It's like night and day between a pair of shoes that fits and doesn't fit. I would go to a running shoe specific store and have them fit you, and then just find a pair that fits right and works for you in your price range.

I am not much of a runner, but I would recomend finding a good running store and go there. A running shoe is really dependent on your body, and a running store can make sure that you get the right shoe for your body and running style.

If you're willing to put up the coin, the Nike Air Max running shoes are some of the best . Very pricey though. About $150-170 U.S. you can find sales on certain colors at sports sites like Finish Line. I got mine for $100. They also look cool.

I've not found a single pair of Nike running shoes that is durable and worth the price.

I picked airmax becase they look and feel good. They are good for bigger guys and rocks don't get stuck in them. I get that they may not seem a good value if you run alot they wear out in about 4 months. If you don't care about looks the asics gel cumulus are my second choice they are very comfortable for long runs but ugly as hell. Both these shoes are good for bigger guys and very comfortable you won't have to stop to pick rocks out and have good traction besides in the rain.

It really depends on what you want to spend and if you care about looks. Based on that I can give my opinion on your choices.

Go to an independent running store. They know what to look for with the foot. I'd say go asics, they are the best IMO.

check out zombierunner.com

if you're looking for distance shoes, get on an ultra-running site. i use saucony for road races and montrails for trail races, and I currently race: marathon, 50k, and 50 mile.

It depends on how heavy you are and the shape and arch of your foot. There is no perfect shoe for everybody I am 235-240 with size 16 high arch and medium width feet so I went with what works for me. Edit I also have a pair of vibram five fingers protect my feet when I go for boxing/bjj training. I find they give my feet protection while letting me use my toes for weight shifting and my 1st step. Better that sand drills IMO if you don't have the time.

you just need a pair of shoes that are comfortable and lightweight. make sure they will let your feet breathe. i doubt you will even need to spend $150 for a decent pair.

805 miles so far this year and it's New Balance all the way for me. See if a local shop does a Gait analysis...they do help with getting right shoes

and this.

The right profile is much more important than the brand if you're looking to avoid injuries. Having said that, generally I'd look at Asics first. They won't break the bank and they specialise in dedicated running shoes, not fashion items.

If you google "when to change running shoes" it will say about 300/600 miles. I don't know how many miles your trainers have done but this is a good rule - the soles can become squashed at about this distance and can lead to foot/leg issues. I ran 10 miles once with a new trainer on one foot and an older trainer on the other foot (both the same model New Balance) and the there was a big difference in how each foot felt after and when running the next day
