http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/06/01/the-next-generation-according-to-game-developers

"63% of developers who spoke to IGN said the Wii U would be the most challenging platform to develop for. One creator went as far as saying, 'we won't be working on Wii U due to these complexities' "

[This is in comparsion to the next-gen Xbox and PS, not current gen systems]

WiiU, an overpriced 7-year old hardware that is also the most diffcult system to develop for. 3rd parties have already jumped the sunken ship. My god, the WiiU is already the most disasterous gaming system since the virtual boy. No wonder Nintendo's price keeps on plummetting (from $70 all the way down to $14 now). Iwata should just resign now because no doubt he will be fired shortly after E3.

Microsoft's trick for their new Xbox.

1) Release a bunch of core games and exclusives we have begging for like a new Kameo, Perfect, Killer Instinct, etc. at launch or near launch.

2) Trick all the core gamers into buying the new Xbox.

3) Release a good amount of core games for the first two years and then....

4) Appeal to the casual audience who has been a little hesitant in buying a new console for the next 5 years.

Funny according to all known developers who have spoken about the Wii U, it's a breeze to port games to the system...

they were talking about the complexities of coming up with creative ideas to make use of the controller. It was kind of obvious since all games are made with buttons in my mind and Nintendo forcing their innovation down the developers throatsis not helpinng. I hope Sony and MS realize this and make their gimmicks as a second option for devs to support it only if they want to.

But that article is pretty old though....

After seeing the Wii U system config patent a few weeks ago, it doesn't surprise me to see complaints, but those complaints in the link don't mention why it's difficult to develop for. The development tools could be immature. I would expect Nintendo to go the GC and Wii route, aiming for a highly efficient system specification with well documented hardware.

yeah we heard this with the ps3 and guess what it didn't out sell the others but it got some of the best games this gen! HA! The Wii U is nintendo so it will out sell the others big time. Plus compared to the PS3 and 360 whihc the devs have been making games for going on 7 years of course its harder, but I'm sure it will be on par or easier to devlope for then the 720 or PS4

The same thing happens with at least one system per cycle, past couple of cycles it has been the Playstation brand that gets this talk. Money makes things happen, if the WiiU gets a larger percent of the market again then developers wont have a choice but to develop for it, and all this talk about being hard to develop for will be forgottern pretty quick.

Well Epic, Gearbox, Vigil games all think otherwise, 63% is low when you consider about 3/4 of developers are absolute garbage anyway...

It's new hardware, so it generallly takes some getting used to, right? Is this because of controller implementation? Nintendo is usually good with this kind of stuff.

I'll just wait a while to see what and how many games come out for it :P.

WiiU's OpenGL/OpenCL should be similar MacOS X's OpenGL/OpenCL or Windows's OpenGL/OpenCL setup.

AMD's Intermediate Language (IL) forces all AMD's supported platforms to have DirectX ASM type language.

WiiU seems to be evolved version Xbox 360.

Depends on the hardware.

Whoosh! Right over your head.

What I meant is that the hardware in the Wii U could be easy to develop for if it has hardware that is fairly well known, documented, and the tools are matured out for developers to use. Any 360 developer will have familiarity with the fact that the Wii U's CPU is based on IBM Power architecture (hopefully Power7) and if so, won't be prone to stalls.

Yep, Nintendo is forcing 3rd parties to develop fresh Ideas for the new controller, its not like developers are trying to give gamers something different to experience.

there was nothing but praise at first about how the system was designed and how similar to the 360 it is in architecture. This whole thing reeks of BS. There's no way that the WiiU is more of a pain to program for than the ps3. If there is truth to this source then there must be some context we're missing out on here. Like others have said, maybe this is normal new-system issues. Maybe they are spending more time to develop tablet features, which is challenging but also rewarding.

aye the darksiders 2 dev mentioned that it took only 2 lined of code to get the game running on the controllers screen. it probably gets a bit trickier the more clever you want to be with the controller but thats the same with any type of software development. i think they mentioned (though i could be getting this mixed up with capcom and the 3DS) that they managed to get darksiders 2 running on the dev kit in a few months. not very optimised i would imagine but running. if there is any truth to this rumor then its probably a reflection of the fact that the wiiu tool set is very new and still under development. this, inevitably, causes devs major headaces but this is the same with any new system. it will improve in time. hell when the 360 was released devs were basically moaning about having multiple CPU cores and threads and trying to make their game code multi threaded which caused much frustration. hell at launch i think 1 game only used 2 of the 3 cores (kameo)...and used them badly. dont even get me started on the PS3. i dont think any launch title used any of the SPEs....maybe resistance but thats it.

I think it's mostly the controller that is causing all the problems.Their may be a small amount of hardware issues to.And the WiiU will be stronger then the current HD twins whether you like it or not TC.

That's not true at all. I have been with Nintendo since the release of the NES. If the third party developers will stick with the WiiU, I'll gladly buy their games. I primarily get a second console for the multiplats that don't seem to make it to Nintendo consoles. If the WiiU gets and maintains its support, I won't have to get another console.
