Marvel and DC are fundamentally different. It can be pretty hard to compare them.
In general Every DC character will beat their Marvel counterpart in a physical confrontation (I prefer Marvel fyi).
DC tends to be the ultimate version of speed... or strength or whatever... "fastest man alive", "world's greatest detective", "the greatest of all the lantern's".
Marvel tends to be more about David and Goliath, "a world that hates and fears them", "turning frail steve rogers into", "Slight bookworm peter parker into the amazing". Overcoming great odds, or the weak prevailing.
Most DC characters are far more powerful then their Arch Enemy, while Marvel characters tend to be equal to or weaker than their Arch Enemy.
I would say Hulk is some what unique to Marvel's way of doing things and DC just couldn't work with a character like that. Especially since he was created in the Nuclear age and was a response to the fear people had at that time. It gets lost that he is a science fiction version of Frankensteins monster or Mr. Hyde.
Superman was a response to the great depression, the weakness, helplessness and fear of the time and was unfortunately the same as Nazi Germany's Ubermensch.
