My son wants a gaming PC but I'm not wanting to spend a ton of $$. I don't need the monitor, which I have a few of those, but I was wondering, can anyone list me some parts that I might be able to order to build this PC, and still stay in the 300-400 range? Also, maybe some good websites to order it? I checked Alienware's website, but their cheapest was in the 800-900 range. Thanks.

It would be nice if you could find a cheap harddisk somewhere because at this time harddisk prices are through the roof and you can't build a system for 300-400 $ .

Yeah, it isn't really the storage that I'm worried with. I'm just trying to find him something that is medium range, that can play games like BF3, Crysis2, etc. , at medium settings. I found a PC at PCUSA.com for around 450, that has 2gb DDR3 @ 133hz, AMD Phenom II 3.3ghz with 6 cores,500gb hard drive, and a Radeon 5570 HD graphics card. The graphics card said it was capable of Direct X 11 support. So I'm possibly thinking about this one, it's just a bit over 400.00, but doesn't sound like a bad deal.

That system is no good, the cpu i can live with, but the ram is too little and too slow, the gpu is even worse. A 5570 will have trouble running battlefield 3 on the lowest setting.

Do you know where you would buy otherwise? are you prepared to build a system with parts?

Cool. Ok, thanks. I don't wanna make a purchase I'll regret. You have any recommendations?

Right now is the best time, hopefully you can get some parts on sale. Newegg.com, Amazon.com and Tigerdirect.com all have sales going.

i think this is a very good deal

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1554245&CatId=2628

You will have to buy a psu and a videocard seperate (because the ones in that system are too weak to play games)

    I suggest this psu

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=422169&CatId=5430

It will work with this videocard

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1366279&CatId=7005

However i strongly suggest to buy a (stronger) videocard,

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1412978&CatId=3669

this videocard is almost twice as fast as the previous one , the previous one will run all games though but only medium settings , the heaviest games even on low settings. The faster one will run most games at high settings and the heaviest games at medium settings.

At this price , this is the best i can do for you, i wouldn't go for the cheapest option allthough it's also good value.

Go to NCIX and ask people on there. They are very helpful and the cool thing about this store is you can price match items from other stores so you almost always get the best price. They also have a point system where you can earn points to get free shipping and other things. Some people will even loan you the points if you ask nicely. In order to get points you sign up for the weekly newsletter and also when you buy stuff review it and earn more points. You can also get points by helping with the Prize Picker when giveaways are going on and you can get points for certain methods of payment too.

In terms of building an affordable pc I would find it hard to believe you can put one together for $400 but you could get close.

If the TC can salvage an old ATX case, HDD, and optical drive from other systems, he may be able to squeeze in a Phenom II or SB i3 based system for that price.

I was thinking about doing something like this, until I can afford to buy something better. Will this be able to run the latest games like Skyrim at medium settings?

it will run skyrim at high settings, if you choose a resolution on a widescreen of 720p (1280 x 720) which is a nice resolution to play at. That is if you choose that most expensive card (hd 5770), the hd 5670 won't go past medium and if you're unlucky some things to low.

i think this is a very good deal

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1554245&CatId=2628

You will have to buy a psu and a videocard seperate (because the ones in that system are too weak to play games)

    I suggest this psu

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=422169&CatId=5430

It will work with this videocard

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1366279&CatId=7005

However i strongly suggest to buy a (stronger) videocard,

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1412978&CatId=3669

this videocard is almost twice as fast as the previous one , the previous one will run all games though but only medium settings , the heaviest games even on low settings. The faster one will run most games at high settings and the heaviest games at medium settings.

At this price , this is the best i can do for you, i wouldn't go for the cheapest option allthough it's also good value.

I'm not sure how true this is, but Tomshardware reported very playable framerates on high settings @ 1080P with a single 5770. In fact, the processor may actually be the weakest link, as Tomshardware also reported that the game relied heavily on the processor, and they apparently saw framerates below 30 with a Phenom II x4 clocked at 3GHz.

Still, for the price, that HP system you linked with suitable upgrades is hard to beat, and I imagine that the framerate will at least stay above 20 (which IMO, is still very playable for such a game).

he can still set some thing on medium if that's the case, don't forget skyrime doesn't use more than 2 cores, so that e 7500 in that pc can easily beat the phenom x4 955 .

Yeah, that's true. I guess a minimum of 30fps isn't an unreasonable expectation from that processor.
