You cannot use the 3G in PS Vita 3G for Online Gaming
- Aug 2, 2011 10:06 am GMT
Apparently, the PS Vita's 3G online connection cannot be used for online gaming. According to Sony, the 3G infrastructure cannot support online gaming, and there would be lag. For online gaming, even the 3G model will revert to the Wifi connection. The 3G in the 3G model can only be used for social features like Live.

Well, this just made my choice easier. I'm gonna go for the Wi fi model now, over the 3G one. What about you guys?

First off that is old news. Secondly wireless network connections like that are horrible for video games. The 3G is more for browsing and downloading.
Personally I think they could do away with the whole 3G model.
Whats the point of 3G then?
I see none unless you have no internet at home and still want to download games and get updates, but who is willing to pay an extra $50 just to do that? I'm guessing not many. Also I'm wondering if you have to have a monthly subscription for access to 3G? If so wow.

- Aug 2, 2011 10:15 am GMTI would go for 3G if there was a realistic subscription where you could get at least 5 gig a month for a reasonable fee, in my area, all 3G networks are horrible. If 3G networks keep going the way they are now, then wifi only.
There is a monthly subscription fee for access to 3G. However, Sony is not responsible for that- AT&T, or whoever your service provider is, will be charging you that fee.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.

Makes sense. 3G is laggy, is pretty slow if you don't have a perfect connection, and can be subject to some pretty nasty traffic management (ie caps and throttling) -- trying to game on it would just ruin the experience for those on more stable wi-fi connections.
That said, something tells me Sony/AT&T aren't going to have a big "3G won't work with games" sticker on the box, which is a shame.

- Ever since they announced that I made up my mind about getting the WiFi model. :P

Update (9/10/11) New Blog:Catherine Review
Meh... like everyone said, we pretty much knew this. Playing games online with 3G is only fine for games that are more turn based or slower paced... Like Words with Friends, or something of that sort. 3G for online heavy games wouldn't work. It's so much more unstable in my areas. Walking around my house, my 3G will go from 1 bar to full bars on and off in various places. I just keep my phone on Wi-Fi while at home). The 3G model is something I can live without. There's no need even for it, because while I'm sure some will like the social features, I could care less... Unless they allowed you to make video calls and stuff like that it would be great... My phone doesn't have a front facing camera. :(- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.

My rig: i5 2500k | 8GB 1866Mhz RAM | 2x SSD in RAID 0 | ATI 6970 | Asus P8Z68. Finally something I can really appreciate.
AT&T  Sony really themselves go on that deal. I actually did think i could game on a 3G connection so this has made me want to buy the wifi only version, if i want to chat and communicate i'll do it on my PC or phone.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.
