"To see if the PC Value Meal actually had the chops to perform in less lofty circumstances, we dialed back the resolution to 1920x1080, the resolution that budget PC gamers typically run."

Crysis 2, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, Total War: Shogan 2, and Battlefield: Bad Company all ran maxed out @1080P with playable framerates.

Who says PC gaming is expensive?

GPU Sapphire Radeon HD 6790...................$150
CPU Intel Core i3-2100..............................$126
DVD Samsung SH-S223A............................$22
MB Gigabyte GA-H67M-D2-B3..................... $90
PSU Rosewill RG530-S12 ...........................$50.
RAM Patriot 4GB DDR3/1333.......................$40
CASE Rosewill R218.................................. $30
HDD Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB...........$60
OS OEM Windows 7 Home Premium.............$99
TOTAL COST............................................$667

With Steam Sales this Gaming PC will MORE than pay for itself.

Not bad. But that's not including a good 1920x1080/1200 monitor. That'll cost you another 200 at least.

The average exaggeration yes. If you love your hobby, money shouldn't be an issue.

I've seen enough scorch marks in my time to know better than to use a cheap power supply. Actually got to see flames from a Deer PSU once... not good.

Couches too, since that seems to be a console exclusive thing.

You dont add TV's to consoles, don't add monitors to PC's.

Chances are somebody buying a new PC like this doesn't have a a 1080p monitor yet.

Someone buying a console on the other hand, is almost certain to have a 720p TV because they don't sell CRT's anymore. It makes perfect sense.

This is coming from a guy with a £2000 PC.

so if you find a brand new ferrari that costs 10000 dollars, vs a hyundai accent that costs 600, and you had 20k, would you still think the hyundai is worth more getting because the ferrari is more expensive? for a console vs pc, yes, you pay 300 for a console, and you pay 600 for a pc which does much more things and which already crushes PC.

That would be a valid argument, if that were the magnitude of the gap we're talking about. It's more like getting a Corvette for $50k vs. a Camaro for $30k. Yes, there's a price difference and a performance difference, but not so great as to make one option unthinkable.

One thing I think most console owners forget is that they own a pc. Almost everyone does. And, while $667 is more than a $200, its probably not $200 more than what you payed for your current desktop. So, instead of buying a $200 console, you could use that money to add onto your general use pc budget.

I don't have an HDTV either, so if i want to get a 360 or PS3 i would need to get a new TV. Whereas for me i already have a 1080p monitor so i wouldn't need to add that to the price of a computer.

My point is, that all these things add up. Excluding things that are an essential part of a new PC is stupid. You're only going to be disappointed when the day comes.

Not sure why PC gamers are so desperate to try to convince others that PC Gaming isn't so expensive?

I get it. You can do research, buy a bunch of parts and assemble a decent machine for a not unreasonable cost. Or you go to the store and buy something completely assembled for a lot less.

If you are inclined to PC gaming then the upfront cost and effort is not that huge a barrier. If you are not inclined to PC Gaming then a console is a lot cheaper and easier to buy.

I don't see why people think that everyone else should think the same way as they do. There are two different, but related markets.

You cam hook computers up to CRT TVS (not completely sure about with new PCs), it's just a little bit more complicated than using HDMI cords.

I dont think anyone is saying PC gaming is cheaper or even has the same cost as consoles, but that is a good price for a pretty good PC that could max plenty of todays games out. If anything it helps breaks the myth that you need to spend $2,000 like you did to play today's PC games.

Yes, but that isdefeating the purpose of buying a new PC. I COULD get an early 90s monitor for $1 to go with my new $5000 PC, and say "oh well this works", but when buying PC of that caliber (a GAMING PC, which is also what TC's build is), the buyer knows that he has a PC capable of 1080p res in games, but needs a new monitor to go with it.

Saying "oh well I could use this 20 year old monitor for my new PC" is stupid because it makes no sense when the purpose is to build a gaming rig.

CRTs > LCDs in every important area for gaming and you can find CRTs for incredibly cheap.

Yeah, I still use an old CRT every now and then. Play at a low resolution and it still looks just as good (If not better) than on my 1080p monitor.

If you love staring at an 800x600, blurry interlaced screen then sure.

LCDs/Plasmas these days are very good and we've got to the point where the differences in input lag and viewing angles (IPS screens, at least) are not noticable, and have made CRTs completely obsolete.

Why would they use a 6790@150$, you can get a 5850 for that, and it's better, how dumb. Also, if building a pc, you can salvage bits, that thing costs, 540~ salvaging the os and optical drive, and maybe even 480~ if you salvage the hdd as well.

Yeah, I still use an old CRT every now and then. Play at a low resolution and it still looks just as good (If not better) than on my 1080p monitor.

That's because CRTs are too disgusting in picture quality to see all the details. That's nothing to be proud of. :P

Wat, I had a 1600x1200 CRT ages ago (nearly the same amount of pixels as 1920x1080), @75hz. Not some measly 60hz ('p'=60+{most are just 60}). CRT's still have the best pixel response time, great density, vibrant colors, black blacks.

Except they go much higher than that, have no input lag, no ghosting, no problems that LCDs inherient have. They also support progressive scan.

Oh yes they are. The only thing that killed CRTs are their size and weight. It still smashes LCD in PQ while plasma and OLED are still catching up.

so 667 is less than 200-300 now?

Grawse

Well this is quality stuff here. It isn`t dated hardware wrapped up in cheap plastic.

honestly though this system will likely cost you more, its not high end, and next gen you'll end up replacing parts, your still better just spending like $800 right from the start, your already close to 700, might as well spend a little more to get an i5/gtx570 and be much happier in the long run.

Not bad. But that's not including a good 1920x1080/1200 monitor. That'll cost you another 200 at least.

Grawse

Are we going to start including tv´s on the console prices as well now?

Couches too, since that seems to be a console exclusive thing.

I lol'd. The bottom line is that buying a good PC is a lot cheaper than most think, and then if you are smart about your purchases and such, it is much cheaper for buying games, playing online, controllers, and so on, than consoles. PC's dont force you to buy a certain brand and size of harddrive, wifi adapters and so on. Not to mention if you are smart, the computer wont break like many consoles do.

Good enough for me. Still plays games at higher resolutions than consoles :P

You can get Windows 7 for $80 right now from newegg too. But that pc is actually good. That gpu is very good, will max almost all games you throw at it. I don't really like the cpu/mobo, but I would rather just spend more money.

All those things you guys just mentioned are now useless regarding modern plasmas. We have gotten to the point where the differences between CRTs and non-CRTs are now unnoticeable to the human eye, and the advantage that CRTs once had is now just a statistical formality rather than real world differences.

We've seen Blacks as deep as CRTs for well over 3 years now with the release of the Kuro's, and "vibrant colours" are present in pretty much any good TV these days.

Uh....where in the world did say it was? It still doesn't change the fact that this PC will do 1080P in all games, which the Xbox 360/PS3 can't lay claim to. For more money you get MORE performance and a BETTER product.
