I've never played a city building game before (atleast I don't think I did), but I was always interested in Sim City back in the day. I was thinking about two games in particular, Tropico 3 and Dawn of Discovery. How are these two games?

The only good one i can suggest in which you can build a modern city is SimCity 4 Deluxe (comes with rush hour expansion) I was excited for Cities XL but apparently its crap.

Thanks for the suggestions. It doesnt have to be present day like Dawn of Discovery. Any city/village/etc making game will do!

Dawn of Discovery Gold

Tropico 3 Gold

Heard relatively good things about Cities in Motion, uhhhh Majesty 2? Ummmm, cant think of anything else as recent as those. OH, and you could try Civilization 5. Thats also a city builder with a good bit of combat. I like it. :D.

I was playing that game last week and still having fun. It is really hard to try and get a city of a population of over 100k. When I hit that point I either start losing money or people, and it sucks :(

I think all city managers, planners and commissioners should have to play a SimCity game to learn about building a city.

- SimCity 4 Deluxe. - Dawn of Discovery (aka Anno 1404) IMO, those 2 games are simply the best city building games ever made.

Nah. It's too focused on making transport networks than actual city building.

they are both incredibly awesome and both worth purchasing. And, at their price (iirc both can be had for 20-30 a piece), I suggest getting both.

Tropico 3 is a little more casual, a little more light-hearted and fun. What it lacks in depth it more than makes up for in presentation.

Dawn of Discovery is like crack. It is deep with tons of micromanagement, but the presentation is incredibly entertaining and fun. Time flies by like nothing (the game actually gives you a notice if youve played for 2 or more hours lol).

If youre looking for a game you can play in 30-90 minute spurts, and doesnt take too much micro, Tropico 3 is the way to go (it does take a little strategy to get your economy going, though).

If youre looking for an in-depth city builder with tons of complexity, go for Dawn of Discovery. Its actually easier to start off than Tropico 3, but once you get going you'll be managing numerous towns and cities at once.

My vote goes to Dawn of Discovery, but both are rock solid. Sim City 4 is good, but honestly I much prefer the above two games.

Dawn of Discovery/ANNO 1404 isn't modern day :P

But it's one of the best and very unique.

I'll throw in support for Anno 1404 (Dawn of Discovery), it's a really awesome game.

Download the demo and you'll be hooked.

I agree, the genre got better in both presentation and in mechanics with age adding and twisting the formula. Id give Anno 1404/Dawn of Discovery the edge though, but I've heard that Tropico 3 + Absolute Power offers alot more than what you'd get with Anno 1404 + Venice.

Sorry, I meant to say Tropico 3 :P All the suggestions are great guys. It seems Tropico 3 + Dawn of Discovery are heavily favored. I'll try out the demos.
