I'm not saying they should adopt a strict terms of use like online forums do, but they badly need moderators to stem the tide of the frankly out of control mass of racists and bigots which seem to have overwhelmed the community there.

It's gotten to a point where i can no longer email my little brother a video i think will make him laugh because it'll almost definately have comments directly underneath containing racial slurs and general, putrid comments of hate and ignorance.

Most people say it's too big a site to moderate, but i say if wikipedia can govern itself so efficiently so can YouTube. They need not impose strict rules or suspensions, just have a community of mods to instantly and permanently ban those who obviously post comments of a hateful nature on any video they can.

Thoughts?

If I ran YouTube, I'd be a bit upset that I'd be playing host to some of the hate speech posted in the comments there. Having said that after establishing it as the primary home of internet comment idiocy I'm not sure you can change much.

Sounds interesting and I agree the majority of the community is awful, but you really want an army of mods checking EVERY YT vid known to man? :|

Please, if you're going to make a poll be more conrete in your poll choices.. "I really could care less" is not how I feel about it, but out of the other 2 choices.. it's the best response.. because I was going to say No. Moderators is a poor way to handle the problem. They need to find a better solution than having somebody sit behind a computer screen and discipline others.. it's needs to be based off of the community... the community needs to take action and hold it self responsible for certain behavior.

I think that it should be moderated. Reason? Once I was looking up something on like Paul Hamm and came across a video that was like "Girl does amazing ___" so I was like hmm let me check this out. Well what I found was a little girl had made an account under a false name and such and was posting videos of herself doing well...stretch things for gymnastics. And about 30 pedophiles writing comments asking her to do this and that and like...idk...basically it was child pornography. And when I reported it into the youtube people they said nobody was violating any terms or conditions. :( So that made me VERY mad.

I'm for free speech. Regardless of what people want to say, they should be free to say it. I'm not offended by things posted on the internet, and think that if anyone is, they are taking it too seriously.

I could understand the posting of illegal material, or pornography, or threats that can be taken seriously, or exploitation of minors. But if someone wants to make a racist comment, whether serious or not, they should feel free to post it. Either for the lulz or not. Any kind of censorship only hurts the internet.

Simple solution, give the video a thumbs up for the "Positive" and then say whatever you want. This doesn't solve anything. People do find ways around these things to mess with you...you do know that right?

No. Youtube is perfectly fine. I LOVE having my share of words on that site. If you can't handle the racism and bigotry then stay away from those heated videos on race and what not. People have every right to their opinions, regardless if its positive or negative or if you agree or disagree.

And that's exactly what is WRONG (and the problem) with annoying moderators. My freedom of speech is constantly being hindered,it simply goes against what I love about America.

It's bad enough I can't say enough without being moderated on a gaming forum, no offense, GS :P

Since when have those comments been limited to "heated videos on race and what not"? Also, freedom of speech doesn't mean you can post whatever you want on websites...

You should read up on what Freedom of Speech actually means. One hint is that it applies to government regulation of expression. If private outlets were required to allow you to express yourself without restriction, it would impinge on the private sectors right to determine their own expression.

The problem is that people bring race into every single issue. Like the Mcd's video posted on here. Go to it and scroll down and the only comments are racist slurs against blacks because that is who was in the video. The video has NOTHING to do about race and they bring it there.

Also you do realize the internet exists outside of America right? It is American's like you who want to impose every last idea of yours on the world that gives us a bad name. Both our wars are because of this, and it is ridiculous.

There's absolutely no point commenting on 99% of Youtube videos, because people who disagree will simply post childish abuse, which usually makes no sense. I love debating, but these people don't debate, they just post abuse. But there's no way Youtube can be moderated. Far too many videos for that. I just stick to watching and keep my views to myself.

True. Probably utopic, but true.

Also, TC, the correct form would be "I really could NOT care less". If you say "I could care less", it means you could possibly give less attention to the matter than you are right now, which would mean that you do, in fact, care about it to some degree :)

No. I like it the way it is. The hateful posts are quite funny. When the videos have some non white person doing something wrong then you see the greatest stupidity come out. I love reading some of those posts.

There is a video about a new song from Thom Yorke which contains a heated argument between people over which specific branch of ethnic minority should be deported first. Racism on youtube is not exclusive to videos on race. If a video so much as features a black man in any circumstance at all there will be racially abusive comments made, guaranteed.

It could do the blacks, gays, mexicans, whites, religious folks, atheists and every other whiner a bit of good, to deal with reality and learn how to not cry and whine over words some idiot says.

That's not true (and what's with the nit picking today, guys, really? :?)

'I couldn't care less' is a British expression referring to one's caring so little that they literally could not care any less than they already do.

'I could care less' is an American expression referring to a sarcastic notion of 'as if there is something in the world i could care less about than this'. :)

what are you talking about? i have comments set to approved by me only and i ignore, deletecomments and block users who are like most jerks on youtube. they cant post a comment and make fun of me behind my back because only me and them can see it till i delete or approve it. delete bad comments and keep good ones.

people need to take responsibilty and moderate their own videos comment sectionlike i do. even better for the lazy people turn comments off problem solved, cant post bad comments on videos that dont any comments.

comment voting is also avalibleand usefulon the allow all comment videos to remove spammers and jerks by voting them down or marking them as spam but the system isnt perfect.

*sigh* Being able to watch a video and send said video to a friend without having it laced with racial abuse would be nice, is all i'm saying. I think it's generally better to say 'i wish people weren't so racist' than to condemn people for 'crying' about the comments made by bitterly racist people. I think the former would be much more progressive.

Yes, but not to use someone else's private resources (such as spraying graffiti on someone else's window or posting messages on Gamespot's privately-owned servers) to do so.

Actually I'm Mexican. And I've dealt with real racism, threats hurled at me because of my race. I've seen racism hurled at whites, blacks etc. A friend of mine who I was visiting in Oregon was put down and kind of threatened by someone because he was black, naturally I came to his defense because he had a bad childhood and as a result he was a girl... Literally he considers himself to be that (transexual).

But some moron on the web saying he wants to do whatever to whoever? Pleeeeeeease.

Definitely. I mean, YouTube is a fantastic place to look for videos and can hold some great educational purposes. Unfortunately because of the nature of some of the comments, it's difficult with younger kids. For example, I work in a primary school and we just needed some sound for the Deal or No Deal theme. One of the videos was just some guy with a camera in front of his telly, and the one and only comment read "******* horrible quality you ******* ****". And I suppose something could be done about the racism. I suppose.

'I couldn't care less' is a British expression referring to one's caring so little that they literally could not care any less than they already do.

I think they should leave it as is. Sure, the comments there can get pretty brutal and ugly, but you have to realize that about 95% (I just made that number up. =] ) of those comments are made by trolls just looking to get a reaction out of people. If people actually feel offended over something some anonymous person said over the internet then they really need to grow a thicker skin. If they want to waste their time responding to them and getting into arguments with them over those comments, then I say let them.

Like xaos also said, i'm simply correcting you. You said your freedom of speech is being hindered; it is not. Moderating a person for being racially abusive is not a hindrance of freedom of speech. If you are racially abuse a person you will be arrested. That does not fall under freedom of speech.

And I'm not going SEVERELY BRUTALLY TECHNICAL over the whole Freedom of Speech issue, You guys are. :|

One posted comment I made, and You guys become Harvard Law School grads.

I'm not condoning for any person being racially abusive. But again, if they have to say something, whether it's an opinion, a spin, or sputtering babbling argument, they have the right to. That's all I'm saying.

If it's a racially motivated threat against someone or abuse and what not, of course, that's where the law and authorities come in.

'I could care less' is a very common expression in America. The notion that 'it's wrong' is just silly. If i spelled something wrong, sure, i'll fix it but petty stuff like 'technically it's i could NOT care less....' just gets a big 'whatever' from me because it makes no difference. How many common expressions are logically flawed when broken down linguistically? Plenty. I could care less is an everyday expression. Everyone knows exactly what it means. It means you're not interested. To say 'ooh that's wrong' is a waste of letters, and needlessly prescriptivist. /my two cents. "Technically you dont have any cents, you just gave your opinion, there was no monetary value involved..' i kid. P

>_> Nobody was being technical. You said forum moderation = hindrance to your freedom of speech. That is not true, as xaos said and then i also said. That is factually, completely incorrect. That is not what freedom of speech is. It's not a technicality, it's completely wrong.

As i said before, you do not have a fundamental right to be racially abusive. The constitution does not grant any right to be racially abusive, and racially abusing someone is not protected under free speech. That is not what free speech is. So in conclusion, no, you absolutely do NOT have a right to say something if what you're saying is racially abusive.

Yes I did say forum moderation = hinderance to my free speech and I'll stand by that. It's something that I Personally feel. And I don't expect you guys to agree with it. I'm not going to lie, I'm just being real, and apparently there's no point in arguing with this issue since we're just going to butt heads over it.

And for the second part, I sure hope you're just generally speaking and not shoving that racially abusive thing down my throat, because like I said on my last part, I don't condone any person being racially abusive.

Moderators to take care of all the little kids that post random videos, post a random slew of profane language for no reason, troll and just get on everyones nerves...

Xx_Hopeless_xX
What he said, especially the first point. While it does sound stupid that some people should have their video removed, it's not right for kids around 10 to be posting videos of themselves only to get a backlash of hate. It's idiotic that their parents let them embarrass themselves on the internet like that....

No, the everyday expression is "I couldn't care less". It's like saying "c'est la vie" as "c'est la van" is ok because everyone else says it and you know what I mean anyway. Saying wrong over and over until we get what you're saying doesn't make it right. :x

I would totally agree with some form of mass-moderation on youtube (that would include selected volunteers of the community to carry out the much-needed moderation of the site). It's now gotten to the point where any video I watch (ironically, even if the video has a peaceful message that anyone could proudly embrace), there is always some form of unnecessary conflict that has taken place, which expands well over at least 100 comments, sometimes even over 1000... :? This is why GS users should be very thankful for the necessary contribution GS Moderators make, as because of their existence, we can all participate in discussions with respect to each other. :)

I'm against it because post moderators will lead to more video moderators.

I like my copyright questionable vids.8)

I think moderators would be too big of a job just because of the sheer amount of videos, some sort of censoring system for comments should be in place.
