    Hi,

I have co-owned the original 60gb ps3 with my mate since release and am now thinking of buying the new one, so that we have one each.

Can anyone help me with listing the pros and cons of the new one?

Im guessing it has no backwards compatibility, no way of upgrading the hard drive...is there anything else im missing?

I would solely play on ps3 games so the compatibilty issue wouldn't be a problem.

Not much from what I've heard. Slim is quieter, uses less power, has buttons instead of touch sensitive, think it has 2 USBs unlike 60gb Fats 4. No BC but then neither do most of them. Otherwise just google search, there's literally millions of threads just like this one.

    Slim PS3:

Pros: Lighter smaller uses less power, and that's about it.

Cons: No linux, no Backward compatibility with old ps2 games.

    FAT PS3 FTW.

I'd agree if he spelt lose right.

The only pro I'd give the slimline is its cheaper and supposedly uses less power.

Steam: Shad0w_Of_Darkn3ss (Feel free to add me, I play L4D so far...)

    Add meh on Ps3 NAO.

As far as hardware goes they are identical, both do Bluray movies and both have PSN. I personally like the Old fatty more, just because it is gloss black with chrome accent, it is a beautiful looking system. I find the Slim to look a little cheap with the flat black and actual buttons on the front.

Sleeker look Fat>Slim Ability to doing everything Fat>Slim honestly dude, FAT>Slim regardless on how you look at it. I recently purchased a 60gb and do not regret anything at all. Stick with it dude.

Won't change sig until Zone Of The Enders 3 is released.

    Pros:

Its 33% smaller, 36% lighter & because it now has a 45nm CPU it consumes 34% less energy than before, which means it and generates less heat and fan noise. (Even though it was silent before lol )

Has a 120GB HDD, and is still upgradeable to 500GB.

Because there is a 45nm CPU, it might give faster loading times in the XMB.

    Cons:

    Can't install linux on it.

Still no backwards compatibility, if that matters to you.

It's a bit longer from the rear to the front.

The big power switch on the back is gone, but that's about the only thing different about the layout of the system's rear.

If you want to stand it vertically, you'll have buy a stand separately. (It can stand a little, but is not as planted as the phat one)

    This vid shows it -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTBVw_5eb7o

It has buttons, the touch-sensitive non-buttons are gone, and they've been replaced with buttons. But i suppose that is an opinionated matter.

One is a square the other is a rectangle, that's all you need to know.

The slim PS3 also offer an option tobitstream audio for the high resolution audio codecs used for Blu Rays such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master audio, this does require the owner to own a receiver with the decoding for the receiver, however this is not required for normal audiophiles since the Both models decode thoselossless audio codecsinternally and send them as PCM. What I do hope for this is to encourage PS3 game developers to use lossless codecs for their games.

Thanks for the replies, I reckon i will get the slim when i got the money, i would only play ps3 games and never install an operating system on it anyway...really has sorted that confusion out.

I own both, and the differences if solely used for gaming isn't much. The PS3 Slim uses less power, is smaller and is in most places cheaper than the old one. However, I like the look of the old one better, and if you have the older versions of the fat PS3, you, of course, have backwards compatibility. The PS3 has the ability to smooth the graphics of PS and PS2 games, and has in-built memory cards for the PS and PS2, which is nice. If you have the old version, there isn't much reason to buy the Slim version, unless you want it smaller and less of a power hog. Not much, really.

To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence."

Who cares if it is lighter? Why do people even post that as a pro? It just sits on a stationary object. It's not like you truck this thing everywhere you go.
