The sad thing about space games is that they usually have a "to be continue" plot but the developers don't make a part 2 or expansion unless its for some multiplayer crap

Surprised no one has mentioned Starcraft and/or Brood War yet, the all time great. EVE Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Jedi Academy, Republic Commando. These all aren't in space per se but they are futuristic.

EV nova aka "Escape Velocity Nova" is an amazing shareware game, even the free demo is pretty addicting, but the full version is definitely worth it! Come to think of it I should really replay that game.

At first I didn't like this game, but I persisted to get my money's worth, and about 18 hours in, I realized I loved it. I can't stop playing it; the game is X3:Terran Conflict. Great graphics, and completely addictive exploration. It is exactly what you want when you think of "space game." It is HUGE.

Also, I will say Deadspace, AVP2, and you could possibly even say Half-Life.

Where the balls are Independence War 1 and 2?

Also, there's Allegiance if you're looking for a free, multiplayer space combat title with some RTS elements.

Umm, all X-Wing series games are worth playing, even if old .

Also as far as I know Mass Effect is set in this space sci-fi reality...

Oh, and in case of space sims - X3 Reunion ftw.

I'm trying to find the name of an old space game I used to play (at least 10 years ago). It was set in the space and you got to pick from 4 or 6 alien factions where you would setup on planet and you'd have to research technologies and upgrade your ships. You'd then be able to navigate to other systems and try to build on other planets.

You could setup alliances with the other factions once you encountered them and eventually attacked your enemies to be the largest race.

It isn't Alpha Centauri that I'm thinking about, it's older than that. I think the name of the game begins with an "A" but I'm not sure.

Any help would really be appreciated!
