My friend wanted me to put this on the board, so here's his question:

"If you were dating someone beforehand, and one of your parents married one of their parents, making you step-brother and sister, would you break up or stay together?" I already gave him my opinion but he's curious about what other people think.

Opinions?

stay together...it would be weirder if they got together after the parents did, but they're not related in any way.

I oddly agree. If you're ALREADY dating, and then the parents get married, that's totally fine. Now, if the parents get married and then you decide to think about going out with your stepbrother/stepsister, then that's weird.

That's what I'm talking about! And if it ends badly, you can blame your respective parents and make sure to grind your ex-gf/bf step-sister/brother's nose in it daily! They couldn't get away. lulz

The parents should break up? :| Seriously, it's hard enough to find people you can stand being around without having to follow strange rules.

I met a family where the two kids were dating and the son went into the military. The parents ended up getting involved with each other and got married. When the son came home from the military he ended up married his now step-sister. They have like 3 kids. It's a little weird but after your married you're like husband and wife and not bro/sis. Plus there is no blood relation. I dunno I guess I'd have to be in that situation but it would really all depend. I look at it now as something gross but who knows.

It's not illegal if I'm not mistaken, some people just might find it strange. I say if you were together first, and since you're not related by blood, why the hell not?

The law is in place to prevent kids from being born with diseases and ailments known to be caused by blood relatives getting together. The law doesn't apply to you if you aren't related by blood.

would definitely be weird but depending on how old the two are matters IMO. if i was 18+ and in that situation i wouldnt care but younger then 18 would be kinda weird, telling my highschool friends my gf is my step-sister. think of the benefits i mean they would be living together right? but i guess that would be a bad thing if they broke up and were still living together. IDK thats a real weird situation to be in.

...that isn't the nicest thing a parent can do... but it isn't the best reason for a break-up, "step-sister" is just a word and it wouldn't mean anything in that context.

Since I don't see anything wrong with marrying your sister even if she's blood-related to you , I'd be fine with the whole situation.

If you didn't grow up together (in a family setting, from childhood) and have a genuine romantic relationship, what is a technicality going to do to make that "weird" and make it worth breaking up over? How could anyone let their parents relationship get in between theirs?
