Downloads at the end of the post. My editor needs the .NET framework v4 installed before it will run.  If it crashes before opening, make sure you have that installed.

 

Step 1 - Get your GoW save to your PC.  Most easily accomplished by backing it up to a USB stick.  Make a backup copy of this, as my tool doesn't.  Changes are permanent.

 

Step 2 - Decrypt your GoW save.  Run the Bruteforce Save Data tool, type in the path to your saves (probably (USBDrive):\PS3\Savedata), select the GoW save, and click "Decrypt PFD", "Decrypt All Files".

 

Step 3 - Run my editor.  Type in the path to one of the data.bin files, or browse for one.  Data00.bin is save slot 1, Data03 is save slot 4, Master.bin contains unlock info for VH / treasures.  Click Open after typing/browsing.  Make your desired changes.  Click Save when satisfied and you can close the editor.

 

Step 4 - Back to the Bruteforce Save Data tool. Click "Encrypt PFD", "Encrypt Decrypted Files".

 

Step 5 - Copy the save back to the PS3.

Notes:

If a value turns red, that means it is outside of expected bounds.  Some will work anyway, some will crash the game.   Let me know of any unexpected behaviour and I'll try to resolve it.

42 C8 = 100, according to GoW.  This is ignoring the fact that  42 C8 = 17096, according to math.  So I've got to sit down, put magic to zero and magic regen to the non-zero minimum, then see how the value changes as 1 is slowly added to it.  Should be easy enough to figure out, but until I actually do it I just don't see the logic of those values.

Red Orbs follow a sane system and would take me 5 seconds to convert to decimal, I just haven't yet.  They're not exactly a priority when you can just manually set any of your upgrades to the desired level.

I imagine petrification build-up and all that is troublesome to analyze in the code.  I have some of the information from the official guide to speed up the studying process (figuring out what the code is saying), but not all the information in concrete.  This study would matter more for GoS, GoW:A and GoWIII.

You start off with 0 magic.  When you get Poseidon's rage, you get a free extension.

Yes.  Kratos's magic bar doesn't lower at all when the number is sufficiently high.

Extensions and eyes/feathers are tracked separately.  You can have more eyes/feathers/keys than are allowed by the game without a problem.  Granting extensions above 4 health or 5 magic causes... oddities.

I think I'll add some logic to check if the values make sense.  I won't specifically disallow them, but I'll highlight them red if they're outside of expected bounds.

 

Edit:  Screenshot updated.  A bit more testing, then it should be ready for a limited release.  I haven't bothered to program in the PS3 profile encryption/decryption, so at this point you still need some sort of de/encryptor.  I'll write up a quick tut with release.

Hmm?  Not sure I follow.  Are you saying that with 3 earned extensions and the free PR extension, the math should work out to 200 units?  I suppose it's possible that the behind-the-scenes math doesn't work out as we'd expect, but I'm going to assume I'm just misunderstanding you here.

Edit:  Interesting sidenote, if health and magic are set to "infinite" (An actual value possible, not just cheating to get it really high), then Kratos takes no damage and does not flinch when hit.  However, he is unable to perform any offensive actions and thus gets stuck incredibly often.  This status also appears to get lost at random, but playing this way is too annoying to bother figuring out why.

That just defaults to the starting amount (100 units).  Each extension is 25 units.  The MAX bar (four extensions) being 200 units.  It was just curious to see 175 units for MP with four extensions (I suppose you're saying '1 extension' includes this first case to activate MP at all, so five extensions would then be needed for true MAX).  I'd had questions based on that.  In the video, you set your HP to 1 unit.  Is that a cap or just a starting point with the actual HP limitations left to number of extensions?  The previous question was more interested in the idea of leaving us with base units to work with, but using up all extensions so the chests (in GoW1) would be HP/MP types instead (despite not having extensions in reality).  Fooling the game.

Whatever is entered into the HP field becomes your current HP.  The max HP is determined solely by number of extensions, and will immediately lower current HP to max if it is above.

Should be do-able by setting eyes/feathers to max with 0 extensions.

Save editing gives the possibility to enter unexpected values into the existing code.  For most of the above, you would need to modify the code itself.  Whatever of that, and such like it, that is possible will go under misc.

I believe I've refined my code enough to stop that specific issue from happening.  That was modifying the code itself.  Giving 'infinite' health/mp enters a legitimate but unexpected value into the existing code.  It's difficult to phrase the limitations and features of each method, and they'll vary in every specific example.  My current infinite jumps code affects half the lines of code that it used to.

Save editor can now toggle swimming status, currently loaded WADs, and Kratos's X/Y/Z co-ordinates.

This won't be as convenient as modifying the code, but if somebody has the patience they can jump around and explore all they want.

 

Misc tab hasn't been fully tested.

Minor update, .470 didn't differentiate between just beating the game, and beating the game on VH.  Can now unlock those treasures individually if one were so inclined.

 

My interest in the project is waning now that the big stuff's done.  I think I'll add the ability to modify the playtime of the current save, then get back to some legit playing on my PAIN run so I can move on.

 

Can you think of anything worth adding before I move on?  Resetting the level data is do-able, but I'm not sure there's a benefit to doing so.  More likely to see use is adding a tab with all the various level variables (captain's key, Desert Gate status, etc), but there are dozens of the damn things and I doubt anybody would bother figuring out how to use them.  I'm not even sure if anybody's used the program once as it is.

Yes.  As I recall, midway through the run I got interested in how the spawn trigger for the Desert Kings worked, since it wasn't obvious when editing the WAD file itself.  Yada yada yada, installed debug firmware, decrypted/modified/re-encrypted the game's executable, wrote a save editor....  And never actually gave another second's thought to the desert king spawn trigger.

 

...As mentioned before, I have focus issues.

 

Or it was all a clever ruse to avoid adding to your backlog of runs to review.  Because I'm considerate like that.

New version released.  Allows reseting of save to very beginning of game, and can modify Time Played.

 

This now gives anybody the ability to start with 0 seconds played immediately after the opening FMV with any difficulty setting, costume, or equipment (and more).

I'm spending more time converting my sloppy code to proper code than I am actually working on the editing portions of the editor.

 

Not that I couldn't just leave it sloppy, but if I'm gonna add 3 more games to this editor after GoW2 works then I probably want to be working from a decent base.

 

It had been a while since I'd done any real programming, so there's a lot of spots where I kept hacking at the code until it worked instead of taking a step back and just doing it right from the start.

Something come to mind quickly.  With GoW1:

-NG+

-NG VH DB PAIN

-NG VH Tyco PAIN

-NG/NG+ (AB instead of BoC) 

-Potentially 'BotG' outside Ares2

-Teleporting around levels and starting a 'game' at exact points (sort of a chapter select)

Regarding GoWII:

-NG+ with NER conditions (allowing GKPAIN+ to be with NER conditions like a proper PAIN variant should be)

-NG with all tools minus the NG+ extra benefits (BoO drain as refill, MAX extensions, Urns available, etc.)

-NG costume runs (like NG VH GKPAIN+) 

-Costumes in the Arena/Challenges *potentially*

-Having relics from the start (rather than having to progress) in a run *as an option*

-'Chapter Select'

These things besides a fresh save (corruption or whatever robbing you of what you had) being able to go straight into challenge runs.  No need to beat non-VH (to unlock it for VH challenge runs), then VH NUR to set-up NG+ NUR run variants.  No need to collect junk or do Challenges again to get costumes/urns.  That sort of thing.  Convenience.

Ah, yes.  Costumes for the Challenges in GoW1.  DB shouldn't be an issue outside maybe CotG9.  CotG2 should have enough instant kill options to make up for the weak damage/collisions, but it would be rough.  Spells would help as they won't be affected negatively (AoH to the rescue), but infinite use would be cheap *and PAIN says no to all that*.  To be PAIN though, you would have to set the AB down to lvl1 BoC as well.  That might make CotG9 undoable by default.  CotG2 would likely become a real test of might too.  CotG8 to a lesser extent, I suppose.

The point is to create a tool.  Some will use it for good, some will use it for evil, some will use it to attach a virus to so they can hack into the PC's webcam in the hopes of seeing naked schoolgirls even if they have to sift through 999 feeds of GMG sexually assaulting an inflatable goat to do it.

If 1000 people download the editor to cheat, then maybe 5 of those 1000 will use it to do something interesting.  And I'm ok with that.  I've already had one guy message me saying that he bought the God of War Saga purely because of my editor.  Probably not the type of guy that would get into challenge runs, but hey, you never know.  More casuals in the grinder means more vets separated from the chaff.

The point is doing fun things.  Challenges are fun.  Some of which are not possible due to restrictions.  Joke runs can be fun too (for novelty).  Using BotG on Easy with Tyco/Armor to one-shot everyone (more so with RotG) would be quite amusing to someone fresh out of even a H DB PAIN run (nevermind VH DB PAIN).  Also, using BotG only (if workable with the restrictions put on us through the usage in Ares2), might be a big challenge for staying alive if at all possible.  It's very likely we would be stuck at all navigation/platforming sections (in need of the infinite double jump and/or swimming activation hack among other things).

A means to an end. Want a glass cannon?  Nerf tank?  Pure challenge attire?  You have to go through these things first.  Can't just assign the values/percentiles.

Random update:  Mind = blown.

 

Two of the values in the Master.bin for GoW1 that I could never figure out are probably for having beaten Easy/normal difficulty.  This occurred to me while I was pondering why beating VH wouldn't count as having beaten hard.  It's not tracking the unlocks, it's tracking the difficulties beaten.

 

I stare at way too many numbers so the obvious answers sometimes escape me.  Also, I'll consider it a self-fellating compliment that it took so long for me to consider the possibility that Easy and Normal difficulties existed and could be tracked separately.
