It was originally a Japanese word simply referring to "animation" but it's since evolved to mean "Japanese animation" 

What about when Americans try to copy an anime style (see Avatar) or Europeans for that matter (see W.I.T.C.H)? And before anyone asks, I'm not a fan of either of those shows. 

Well, even if the art style doesn't tell you where it was made the cultural context probably will. 

Actually, in my experience Japanese media tends to have far superior writing and art to American media. 

I know of one series that actually had good writing for an American series.macrules_640

I used to wake up for TMNT, but Yugioh wasn't made until much later. Gotta love that theme.
