BASTROP, Texas -- Ray Dowdy, who played on Texas' national championship team in 1970 and was an All-Southwestern Conference defensive tackle, has died. He was 56.
Dowdy died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack while driving to Austin, said his daughter, Regan Dowdy.
Dowdy transferred to Texas after two seasons at Texas Junior College. He coached high school football after college and had accepted an assistant principal position at Rusk High School on Monday, his daughter said.
