What is the secret to creating good, active and successful threads in unions?
Well, it's more or less random what becomes a good thread.
The only big mistake you can make is to generalize it to much. If you make the thread around a to big subject you will soon see that it often dosn't get to many posts.
I want to add onto that.Well, it's more or less random what becomes a good thread.

But if you want an active union that gets lots of posts, and want die, then you have to make it about a subject people do or will like. Such as if a new game is coming out, and there arnt any unions about it so far, then make a union about that game. If there are too many unions about one subject, such as the nintendo based unions, then yo will have less people join and be active. There is the chance they will say "Hey! Why should I join this union when there is that union with all of this in it?" Thats why you need to be quick about forming a union about something that is going to be big.
sometimes debates between two outcomes work as well. Such as was this better than this, or would this outcome be better than the real one.BassCrossZeroI agree. I've seen lots of people get into debates in other unions.
Always make sure to have a good sense of humour, or have some members with humor, because if all of the topics are completely serious and no jokes, than no one is going to enjoy your union or want to post, so they will either quit or become lurkers.
Also, I go along with what Kcwsk and that other guy said, try not to keep your topics to general, however I feel that you union does not have to be completely about your focus, add one or two topics to help people get away from talking about one thing for too long, that way when they get sick of lets say for example Sony, they can go to a topic that discusses the other gaming companies.
