A few spoilers here from the Deathly Hallows movies/book. [spoiler] Why do the Malfoys change side?
They are portrayed as evil wizards through the whole series, yet in the last book/movies, they are actually not fighting with Voldemort more than they absolutely have to... Why?
Why is Draco Malfoy hesistant to say it is Harry Potter they caught when the Snatchers comes to them with 3 young wizards. The other two being Hermione and Ron. Why does Draco's mother say that Harry is dead instead of alive? Why do they run when people believe HP is dead and that Voldemort has won? [/spoiler]
[spoiler] Simply put, Voldemort was unhappy with them given Lucius' failure at what he was asked to do, and the Malfoys are aware of this. They defected likely because they knew if they had continued to stay on Voldemort's side, or if Voldemort had won, he would've disposed of them eventually anyway. [/spoiler]

[spoiler] Draco could have simply killed Dumbeldore to make up for it, or given them HP. They had the chance to change this. Everything will return to normal [/spoiler]
Draco is a coward if you haven't noticed. His mother loves her son and will do anything to protect him. Azkaban broke Lucius. He wouldn't be able to serve properly.
It seems like Narcissa, Draco's mom, changed a bit after Lucius failure in the end of HP and The Order of the Phoenix. [spoiler] Failure being the destruction of the prophecy and also blamed for Voldemort being seen by the aurors and minister himself at the very end.
She never was a death eather. Well Lucius being sent to Azkaban, she wanted to protect her family more. This is also the reason behind making the Unbreakable wow with Snape... About Draco's mission from Voldemort. While not betraying the dark lord yet, she is definitely heading another way. That betrayal comes when she checks if HP did die by the second time he was hit by the killing curse.
Draco for some reason seems to hesitate when it comes to actually killing someone. Most obviously seen when he has disarmed Dumbeldore at the top of the Astronomy tower, but also when he doesn't reveal that they had indeed caught Harry Potter in Deathly Hallows.
Perhaps not as much switching sides as I thought first, except for the betrayal of Voldemort at the very end, they wanted to protect themselves. Smart time to be changing direction as they avoided Azkaban because of this. [/spoiler] TL;DR - Protect themselves more instead, not giving their life for the dark lord.
