This here is a test you can take that at the end will place you somewhere on the political spectrum; of course depending on how you answer the questions, some are more obvious where they will place you than others. The compass doesn't follow the well known left-right scale, but also adds an up-down to it as well supposedly to incorporate the vast range of todays political views. It also offers you some comparisions with famous or infamous political figures, thinkers etc.

 Political Compass Test

From what I read in Helium Flash's political affiliation thread most of us are sure where we sit politically, so I suppose this test may strengthen that, change your views, make you hate the test itself, or you may dismiss the test as inaccurate.  I think it will be interesting to see where others lie on this scale.

I don't take these internet tests too seriously, but my results are probably around where I would expect to be:

Economic Left/Right: -4.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.85

People with serious inheritable disabilities should not be allowed to reproduce.  Tough decision..

First-generation immigrants can never be fully integrated within their new country. What's wrong with that? It is true.. :|

Anyway, results:

Your political compass

Economic Left/Right: 0.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.69

According to this, I'm more liberal than I though. I think that's fair to say, but at the same time, I have some conservative opinions. For instance, I believe an advanced western military and a powerful NATO are important, as well as that Russia's behavior in the international political scene is pretty deplorable (not that that of the US could be considered good by any means).

Economic left/right = -8.12

Social libertarian/authoritarian = -5.95

Pretty much what I expected, although slightly further left.

helium_flash

It is a tough one, I think I picked 'agree' for that one, but not 'totally agree'. Its definetely a question that contains different moral dilemmas ('right' to reproduce, quality of life for the child etc, prenatal testing and abortion). I would not have childen if there was a high chance of me passing on such a disability.

I would say they are centre right, and right as that is probably where the Labor and Liberal party sit respectively. The two generally agree that privatisation and a free markets are a good thing. They mainly disagree on workers rights and unions, hence the scrapping of Howards Work Choices.

Not the religous side exactly, but the conservative side. One can understand why it can be associated with religion though.

It also emphasises economic freedom, free markets etc.

Centre right in my previous post didnt mean the centre of the right side, but on the right side near the centre of the spectrum. Probably more in the Libertarian side (of the up,down scale) as well. Just to avoid any misinterpretation, I should have worded it better. :D

To be honest... yes.  As I'm aware of it I'm better able to prevent myself from being manipulative and whatnot.  :P  ...but I lean towards authoritarianism in part because I believe authorities are in place for a purpose. (in part because of Romans 13:1-7)  Keep in mind I am close to the center as I honestly believe dual parties is a good thing.  The nation would suck if we were just democrats or just republicans. (...more than now :P)

In general, left means liberal and more in favor of socialism and big government. Right is conservative and not in favor of socialism and for smaller government.

Liberals of the 18th century would probably be considered conservatives of today. The only difference is that they were Enlightenent thinkers ;). So you are correct!

I am in favor of minimal government. The only government I want is where it is necessary, such as for police, military and some other programs. Health care if done right.

So this means that you want more tasks handled now by governments to be in the judgement of the military, police etc.

No, I'm saying the government should only handle what is necessary and vital. For all else the private sector should be able to take care of it.

The right can be associated with free-trade (minimal gov't intervention like mentioned before), as well as equal opportunity to gain wealth and self-actualisation, through the implementation of basic rights ect, these are all aspects of liberalism. The left is more about equal distribution of resources so that everyone has a 'fair share', or access to government services. Can be associated with social democracy which still contains aspects of free markets and aspects of socialism combined. Then way on the left is socialism/communism.

Does being "liberal" in the USA  mean something different to supporting liberalism and its key features? If so I am interested to find out what it refers to.

It's conservative in that it's how we've been doing it for a while; conservatives would like to conserve the current way of doing things.

I can understand what you're saying though, that private enterprise is more liberal because it allows the people more control.

I've taken this test quite a few times, lol.

Here's my result:

--- Also take note of this ---

This is where the recent presidential candidates stand in terms of actual stances if they were to take the test. If it seems a little odd to you, note that the middle is socialism, left is pure communism and right is pure capitalism.
