Kotaro Uchikoshi (Spike Chunsoft)

Known for: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (DS), Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward (3DS, PS Vita)

“It’s looking like 2015 will be the year where everything I’ve built up over the years will come together and be let out into the world in one fell swoop.”

Thanks to Char the ninny for the link. I might pee myself. The modern day Shenmue might be uncursed!

If you don't know, Zero Escape is a visual novel series that ended abruptly with 2012's Virtue's Last Reward. The series had widespread acclaim and was on GameSpot's GOTY nominees in 2012.

Surprisingly Westerners bought Zero Escape more often than Japanese folks, stunting the series' progression. Here's hoping Episode 3 might be coming.

This is the worst news I've ever heard. :3

That right there has me interested enough to consider going out of my way to go find a copy of 999 again and go through it. I know you'd be happy about that. ;)

Honestly was really let down by this series. Tons of positive press made me go purchase it. It's a really cool concept and gameplay... but I can't accept the "Well, you need this ending because you go back through time with that knowledge because you died or something and can now get this ending". It's not satisfying. Just feels like your decisions don't matter. The endings don't make any sense with your actions. I'm interested to see the next one... but I'm kind of a critic of this series.

Sounds like you stopped at 999?

Virtue's last reward has a plot point that makes at least make a bit more sense, in universe, anyways.

I still maintain to this day that Remember 11 is the best thing Uchikoshi ever put out. In fact I'd say its ranks as the best visual novel I've ever played... and it doesn't have an ending. If he's confident he can top that then colour me excited.

Nice! I was afraid Danganronpa might have killed any chance for this game to come out. Got the plat for VLR, couldn't stop playing it till the end, really excited to see what happens next.

@darkspineslayer: The opposite, actually. I played through Virtue's Last Reward and had a very sour taste for it because of how the endings worked out. I like multiple ending games... but this whole alternate reality stuff is really lame.

@Shmiity: I thought it at least justified the branching paths well enough, and gave a real excuse about the character not knowing things until the player knew them.

I edited that spoiler block into your post. Please be more careful about that, there are clearly folks in this thread who have not played the game.

Out of curiosity.... how many Visual Novel style games had you guys played prior to 999 & VLR? Hotel Dusk was my first and was followed by 999 and VLR.

Visual Novels seem to be gaining popularity outside of Japan and Steam has already released a fair amount (Shan Gui was nice, albeit short) with more coming down the road (although heavily censored/content removed). I imagine due to being new to the Visual Novel genre it was easier to be blown away by the games versus someone who has been playing Visual Novels for years. Mind you I'm not trying to take anything away from 999 & VLR as I enjoyed them and feel like they're games you need to discuss with other people. I remember after I beat 999 I had a PM chain with Blab asking him about what he thought of this or that and we both gave answers that the other person didn't think of. I think that's part of what makes the Zero Escape community great - even if it is a small one.

Sadly not my cup of tea, but is good to see it released, the genre seems to be quite popular.

@Heil68: Well, assuming you played it all the way through to the True Ending (a lot of people somehow don't, lol), and you haven't played VLR...

Eh, I can't judge you, I've finished 999 and I've not even played VLR yet, and I own it :p

Looking forward to it, I hope it takes some minor gameplay notes from Danganronpa, more specifically movement around the 3d space, I want more freedom to explore the area I'm confined in when im not "escaping"
