OMG FINALLY! A Zelda game that will not be made around puzzles! I've been waiting for this for years! Oh dear, at last they are doing something to change the formula of this overrated stale franchise. No more braindead but still tedious puzzles for children about pushing blocks... You really do need to read the quote to believe it. It's like he's finally cutting off the leash, he's realizing that we are grown-ups now and we aren't that stupid either.

Aonuma: I think people have come to just assume that puzzle-solving will exist in a Zelda game, and I kinda wanna change that, maybe turn it on its ear.

As a player progresses through any game, they're making choices. They're making hopefully logical choices to progress them in the game. And when I hear 'puzzle solving' I think of like moving blocks so that a door opens or something like that. But I feel like making those logical choices and taking information that you received previously and making decisions based on that can also be a sort of puzzle-solving. So I wanna kinda rethink or maybe reconstruct the idea of puzzle-solving within the Zelda universe.

http://kotaku.com/the-new-zelda-might-not-have-the-puzzles-you-expect-1590544423

The next thing to go is the stupid auto-targetting system and then we are in for something truly new in the franchise since Ocarina of Time.

look at the comment section at kotaku. lol, there's already a bunch of butthurt nintendo fanboys raging about the statement. This is why nintendo fanboys can't be taken seriously, these guys just live in the past and enjoy games mostly through nostalgia and bias than anything else. Like if solving braindead linear puzzles were anything to cry about.

It's a key aspect of the franchise, if you don't like it that's on you. It's like Metal Gear Solid dropping stealth and going as a FPS. It seems logical people wouldn't like that statement.

What I got from that statement wasn't that Aunoma was going to abandon puzzles but rather expand the definition of what a puzzle is.

The problem with the puzzles of the Zelda series is that they have gotten predictable.

(A) Spatial reasoning ; block puzzles
(B) Item/Trigger puzzles; light a torch, latch onto a hookshot
(C) Search for keys to enter locked doors

These types of puzzles have gotten predictable, so I commend Aunoma for trying to expand from them.

I can see why people would be upset. People play Zelda for the puzzles and dungeons. At least that's why people I know play Zelda. The Fear is that people want this game to be an RPG. They want it like skyrim and Dark souls, or the Witcher. In reality Zelda is not any of those games, and to me they aren't even close. Luckily for me, I love the new direction that Zelda is taking, but it is easy to see why some people might be worried. Zelda is probably the best series in gaming and solving puzzles are a big part of that. Hopefully they don't just remove it completely but think of more interesting and challenging puzzles to give us. A zelda without puzzles completely seems like a huge mistake.

Zelda has never been about the puzzle solving to me. It has been about the experiences, the gameplay, the dungeon crawling, whopping enemies with my bow, sword and other items, some musical integration, the amazing areas to explore. Puzzle solving is near at the end of the list. But do know that "puzzle solving " is integrated in all games, if the definition is broad enough. With it being open world, I doubt they are ditching puzzles, but they are going to rethink them.

Fans of the series will despise that. I think it's a good idea to change stuff up, maybe not remove them altogether but at least try something new

EDIT: Trust me to read what OP said instead of the actual article

So Aonuma stating that he'll change the types of puzzle solving present in the next Zelda= they're taking puzzles out of Zelda... Good one Gue?

P.S. No one can read on system wars confirmed?

Yes to all this.

Nah, it's more like MGS keeping it's stealth but refreshing itself by going open world. Keep the series heart intact, but expand and renew it :3

Yeah i get what you mean ... i had 2 guys yesterday talkint about how good TP/SS were ... One went as far to call all zelda games super innovative ( which clearly some of Zelda games werent , specially the latest ) ...

Anyways you cant beat fanboys even if you have legit reasons they wont listen. Finally a Zelda that will provide something else than the "safe" formula and im eager to see more. I dont think puzzles will entirely be missing .

The only worry i got is , how big the world will be... Open world sounds fantastic no doubt but how big is a concern.

It doesn't sound like they are going to nix the 'puzzles', but rather just get rid of the simple intermittent chores like lighting torches to open doors and stuff like that. I'm sure we'll still be crawling through dungeons, opening shortcuts and maybe finding some keys.

I'd be fine with Aunoma changing up how puzzles work, though I don't want them to ever be gone altogether.

From what it sounds like that is what Aunoma is wanting to do, so I think this is a good thing.

Ya that sounds pretty cool and I was amazed at idea , when I first heard about it from him . There WILL be puzzles but different than previous games . From what I've understood , platforming and stuff will be done to reach difficult places within the vast world .

I have no problem with this.

When a "puzzle" consists of pushing a block onto a switch or reflecting a beam of light onto a symbol to open a door, you might as well just do away with it.

If you're going to put in puzzles, I want them to actually make me think.

I do like the water temples in OoT and TP though, where it's like the entire dungeon is a puzzle, I hope they keep stuff like that.

I'll give it a shot. I like Zelda but I am not going to trade in my soul for it like some of these fans will. I say let's see how this turns out. I'm liking what I saw from it already so hopefully it turns out great.

No, it's just that we're too smart for torch-liting puzzles, block puzzles, use X item here puzzles and find the key puzzles and we want something new.

If it doesn't damage other key aspects of the game, yes. It's harder to do well, compared to linear games. And I'd rather a quality linear game than a shoddy open world one.

But when done correctly, it means more freedom, more choices, more exploration, more paths to victory, more emergent gameplay, more replayability... it is essentially crack to me (and many others).

It sounds good to me. I liked the puzzles they had, but I'm excited for more interesting and, possibly, more difficult puzzles. Although, it sounds like the puzzles might just be more like Metroid, which, I'm cool with, but it wouldn't be too new.

@locopatho: That's how I feel. There is a place for linear games today as they can be more controlled but the freedom offered by open world is really something I've always loved. Exploring, finding things on your own, different paths.

I would love for Zelda to expand into a quest based progression system with puzzles integrated into them that aren't brain teasers for 4 year olds. Not that those aren't fun for awhile, but some change would be good. The problem I have with a lot of Japanese game development is that they get stuck in their ways not realizing that they would probably do some amazing shit if they just......TRIED.

Hmm what kind of dungeons do you want TC? Dungeons with linear design and simply killing every thing on sight? What's wrong with puzzles in dungeons? I seriously don't follow.

Also Z targeting is optional.... not that there's anything wrong with targeting a enemy in the first place. Are you complaining about Dark Souls targeting also? Or maybe you're talking about the camera movement? (that'd be a legit complain tho)

I hope there are still some traditional puzzles, because if it becomes all action, it'll suffer just as equally as it does now. I don't wanna spend a whole dungeon just killing stuff any more than I wanna spend it pushing blocks.

I want challenging puzzles AND fun combat. Choices are good too, but as a replacement for puzzles I don't think it's a great idea, I mean I like having the choice of what order I take on dungeons and such, but I don't think choices could really go too much deeper than that for a Zelda game, because as much as they talk about turning the series on it's head I can't believe there ever gonna go all out and let you choose to be good or evil in the game.

Slightly concerning. To me, that's the core of Zelda. There's three pillars to Zelda: Puzzles, exploration and combat. I think Puzzle solving is the biggest pillar of the three, followed by exploration, then combat.
