I'm curious on what your guy's gaming legacy or loyalties looked like when you first became serious gamers through today? This isn't a fight thread, it's a personal history thread.

Take me for example, I've played and owned numerous systems but always had a preference. Post your system of pteference (PC included but not handhelds - I count them differently) or if you've never had a preference (doubtful) just post the one you bought first.

My example:

8bit - NES

16bit - Genesis

32bit - PS1

128bit - PS2

Last gen - PS3

Current Gen - PS4

Keep in mind from the 32bit gen until this gen, I've always owned at least two systems. Usually Nintendo was my secondary but I did love my Dreamcast.

What's your legacy?

8-bit gen:

  • Owned: NES
  • Favorite: NES

16-bit gen:

  • Owned: SNES and Genesis
  • Favorite: SNES

32/64-bit gen:

  • Owned: PlayStation and N64
  • Favorite: N64

128-bit gen:

  • Owned: DreamCast, PS2, GameCube, and Xbox
  • Favorite: It was the GameCube at the beginning of the gen, but after a string of disappointments from Nintendo, my favorite switched to Xbox by the end of the gen

Last gen:

  • Owned: Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii
  • Favorite: Xbox 360

Current gen:

  • Own: Wii U and Xbox One (I will probably get a PS4 next year)
  • Favorite: Xbox One

So basically Nintendo was always my favorite until about halfway through the GameCube's life when I realized that it wasn't as great as previous Nintendo consoles and I was having more fun with my Xbox. Since then, Xbox consoles have been my favorite.

All Nintendo handhelds, only one Nintendo console (Wii)

All Sony consoles (barring 8th gen), both handhelds

Played but never owned Game Gear, Mega Drive (EU name, mofos) and Dreamcast

Played but never owned Xbox, owned 360, future Bone ownership uncertain

Nothing from Atari, I didn't evacuate the womb early enough

So chronologically it went something like this:

Sega -> Nintendo -> Sony -> Sega/Ninty/Sony for a while -> Nintendo/MS/PS2 at start of 7th gen -> every platform by Sony/Nintendo/MS throughout 7th gen -> PS3/Vita/3DS (will unretire 360 for Fable HD) these days -> PS4 purchase in the future

* ATARI

*NES

*SNES, GENESIS

*PS1, N64

*PS2, GC, Xbox

*PS3, 360, wii

And of course with PC and almost every handheld system.

Best consoles were NES, PS1 and PS2.

Worst consoles were Wii, Xbox, 360 and N64. Although every one of them had some really good exclusives, but compared to their respective competition of that gen, they fell short.

For me it went

Magnavox Odyssey

Atari 2600

Atari 5200

Atari 7800

NES

SNES

PS1

PS2

PC

PS3

Today PC is my main and will forever remain my main. I plan on picking up the PS4 later this year. I excluded handhelds.

Atari2600

Nes

Snes/TurboGrafix16/genesis

N64/ps1

Ps2/xbox/gamecube

Xbox360/playstation3/wii

Pc/ps4 currently, though I'll purchase the others later on.

I preferred Nintendo consoles until the game cube (all Nintendo consoles I purchased on day 1 except the win and wiiu)

X box and Xbox360 were my favorites of the last 2 gets and this is the first generation I started with a Sony console... I have zero loyalty to any company and most likely never will... I prefer to see who is most focused and strike there first, knowing eventually I'll get them all.

The Super Nintendo is, without reservation, the best console ever made.

8 bit

  • nes

16 bit

  • genesis

i just bought myself an snes last year. really happy with it cuz i actually thought the snes was the better system out of the 2

32/64 bit

  • playstation

whatever bit(6th gen)

  • playstation 2 was the first console
  • gamecube
  • xbox (liked it way better than the gamecube, but just not as much as the ps2)
  • pc gaming was awesome around this gen....too bad my sister effed up my pc

7th gen

  • playstation 3 (free online baby!)

i have to say that the reason why i bought the ps3 first was because of free online, rrod and when the ps3 first came out...games like tekken and final fantasy were ps3 exclusives...was pretty mad that they came out multi plat cuz i thought the ps3 which i purchased kept getting crappy ports. gran turismo and god of war were the only reasons left to buy ps3 at that time. thank god i held off

  • xbox360 in 2012

i have to say that i did not see the justification of xbox live which everyone raved about as reason to pay for online gaming. its a good system, but every reason why i wanted a 360 was useless as well since mass effect went multi plat

8th gen

  • ps4 because of the exclusives, price and microsoft executives despite the xb1 having i think the better line up as of now until the end of the year. xb1 isnt even on the radar until a major price cut and i see something i cant play on the 360 or the ps4. titanfall would have been it but its a multi plat. no need to drop $600 on that

N64 - PS1 - PS1 was favorite

PS2 - Xbox - PS2 was favorite

PS3 - 360 - 360 was favorite

currently an X1 owner might pick up a cheap PS4 in a year when it gets a bit more interesting.

-Intelevision

-NES

-SNES

-N64

-Gamecube (had a PS2 but barely used it)

-can't decide between Wii and PS3 (Wii had extremely high quality exclusives, but PS3 had a ton of amazing 3rd party games). I'm leaning more towards PS3

-Wii U (intend to pick up a PS4 sometime down the line)

Same. And if it wasn't for hardware disparity and lack of big 3rd party support i'd probably only own Nintendo consoles today.

I was loyal to Nintendo from the NES, SNES, N64 days. But i was mostly let down from the N64 and gave up on nintendo from that point on. I liked the psx in 1998-2001, then I became loyal to the xbox from 2001 to recent xbox360... but I have turned completely against Microsoft now due to their shadyness in the DRM issue and will stick it out with Sony until they turn against me, then go back to Nintendo or completely off consoles.

The whole DRM thing on PC also has me almost off PC games... i fiercely hate buying a game and reading in its instructions after i get it how you must install STEAM and connect to the internet everytime you install the game. I think into the future, and when steam is non-existant, i won't be able to even play these games i own unless with some luck the company releases a patch to disable it before they go out of business.

The MegaDrive is the first gaming console I owned but I didn't own it for long. I've had a Nintendo 64 and Gameboy for a while, and loved anything Nintendo at that point, so I was a sheep back then.

Then from 1994 to 2011 - PlayStation, owned every console. PlayStation is the longest brand I've been loyal to.

2011 to present - PC.

The first console I bought with my own money was PlayStation 1. And although I've owned other brands over the years, I still have a soft spot for the PS brand.

I grew up with Star Wars Battlefront II, Timesplitters 2, Red Faction (original), and Halo CE. Those will always be my favorite games, and most don't even have a proper sequel except Halo.

Commodore was my introduction to video games. But I never actually owned one, but just played it at a mate's house. My parents got me an Acorn Electron though, so that was where my loyalty lied at the time, before switching over to consoles with the Sega Master System.

I've had a PC since I was 10. Back in the early days, there was nothing I had except commander keen and duke nukem (NOT Duke Nukem 3D)

I would much rather have had a Sega Genesis like my cousins!

Then 1993 came around...Simcity 2000, Doom, Wing Commander:Privateer, Master of Orion....god. Since then, I have been an enthusiast. I tend to play exclusives the most (Simcity 4, The Sims 3, X3: Reunion, Total War, etc) but I play some multi platform games as well, especially Star Wars and Saints Row.

I also picked up an XBOX to play some fighting games (as well as Jade Empire...before it came out for PC) and got an XBOX 360 to replace it. Then I got a PS3 and have only had my XBOX plugged in for 20-30 minutes.

The one constant seems to be that I have always had PC games, although my relationship with PC was never very solid until I had the money to build my own. The problem with PC games when you are a kid is that you either can only play them when your parents aren't using the family computer, or you have to play them on a crummy hand-me-down system that can barely run anything. Also, when the system's specs got outdated, my parents were seldom in a rush to go out and buy a bunch of upgrades just so me and my brothers could play more games on it.

My relationship with PC gaming started getting stronger again in college, when I had my own laptop and I got to catch up on some games I had been wanting to play. I ended up building my current tower when I realized I needed a lot more power for the projects that I was going to be working on, though prior to that I was mostly playing on my PS3 since my laptop wasn't terribly powerful. Oddly enough, I got back into PC gaming around the same time I started getting very nostalgic about my old game consoles.

I must say though, some of my fondest gaming memories probably came from the old Nintendo and Sega systems, even though I mostly play on PC nowadays.

@SEANMCAD: I had a load of BASIC coding books with my c64 by the time I was 8 I could code fluently...I learned it as I learned to read and write so I picked it up naturally....of course now I cannot remember a damn thing and I never kept up with programming and I regret it deeply :(

Also, PC, and I've never owned a Sega system (though I wanted a Dreamcast very badly).

Most of these were great systems, really the only one I can say I was disappointed in overall as a purchase was the Wii, everything else I really liked, all said and done (though it might be too early to pronounce a judgement on the Vita and Wii U either way just yet).

Since I've been gaming, I've never really had an "allegiance" towards one particular company so these are just my favorites from each gen as I always owned every console at some point or another.

Well then, I retract my previous statement, you do not fail at life.

Carry on good sir.

And if you do eventually get a Dreamcast, make sure to stay away from late-model US Dreamcasts (the common rule is to stay from any one manufactured post Oct. 2000) or Japanese specials edition Dreamcasts. You'll thank me later.

It's funny how much I used to be into PC gaming when I was younger. That was back when my Dad used to play video games and I'd have to beg him to let me play on PC. Some of those games I used to play were Half Life, Team Fortress (Classic), Counter Strike, Diablo, Stronghold, Unreal, and Lego Island.

I started on the Atari and loved that thing. After that:

8 bit: NES

16 bit: owned a Genesis and loved it, but always preferred the SNES. I later got a 32x but would prefer not to speak of that.

32 bit: I owned a Nintendo 64 and really didn't play a whole lot of PS1. I have tried to go back and play some classics, but other than the JRPGs, which have been mostly really good, everything is really outdated.

Gen 6: I owned an Xbox and bought a PS2 when the price hit $99. I honestly prefer the Xbox to the PS2. It had Halo and NG, the multiplats are much better, and the controller is much better. Similar to the PS1 games, going back and playing PS2 games is kind of hard if I'm not playing a JRPG. I never had a Gamecube, but I really liked going back and playing those games on the Wii. It had a lot of really great games that still hold up well today. It's really a shame that it didn't sell better than it did.

Gen 7: I owned a Wii, a PC, and a PS3. I also had a roomate that bought a 360 at launch, so I had access to that for a few years. The PC is by far the best system to own and I really don't ever plan on not having a gaming PC in the future. The Wii has been my favorite console, but it probably would have been my least favorite if I weren't playing all multiplats on the PC. The PS3 is also really good. The 360 needs more exclusives.

3rd gen = Atari 2600 + NES, preferred the NES.

4th gen = SNES + Sega Genesis + Amiga 500, very slightly preferred SNES over the Amiga 500.

Because I can't ignore the awesome of Another World, Prince of Persia, Sensible Soccer, Robocop, Terminator, fire & Ice, Cannon Fodder madafaka! Moonstone, speedball, stunt car racer and Jaguar XJ220, that game took all of my gaming time..oh and dat godly OST.

5th gen = PS1 + N64, preferred PS1.

6th gen = PS2 + XBOX + GameCube, preferred the PS2.

Swapped the PS2 with the Dreamcast for a week from my friend to play Shenmue, Sonic, Crazy Taxi, Power Stone , was a godly experience.

7th gen = PS3 + 360, preferred PS3.
