Microsoft, are you trying to mess up your console?!?!

Independent developers cannot self-publish their own games on Xbox Live Arcade. Instead, they must get a publishing deal--either with Microsoft Game Studios or with a third-party partner. Games published on Xbox Live Indie Games are exempt from that policy, but that marketplace isn't necessary seen as viable.

Limitations imposed by Microsoft have prevented a number of games from ever appearing on Xbox 360. And apparently, Xbox One won't change how Microsoft approaches indie games.

When asked if developers will still need a publisher to get content onto Xbox Live, Matt Booty, general manager of Redmond Game Studios and Platforms, told us that "as of right now, yes. We intend to continue to court developers in the ways that we have."

He did add that "I would also expect that for this new generation, that we're going to continue to explore new business models and new ways of surfacing content. But Microsoft Studios is a publisher that works with a wide range of partners, as do a lot of other people, to bring digital content to the box."

When it comes to self-publishing, Microsoft is the odd man out. Both Sony and Nintendo allow developers to publish their own games onto PlayStation Network and Nintendo Network, respectively. Microsoft's position stands in stark contrast to Sony, which has been aggressivelypursuing indie content for PS4.

Sony having an indie-developer on stage was so awesome. Sony overall seemed so much more humble and like they wanted to give the spotlight to others (developers and gamers). MS sends the message of a fat, greedy, sportsloving douche.

What can I say, they only allow quality content.

The only thing I can relate Xbox One to right now is a Socialist government; Right now they want to control everything. Can't say I like any of their recent decisions.

If your game is good enough, you will find someone to publish it. Good job Microsoft for having standards.

A lot of the crap is hilarious...  but yea.... considering i've seen "it comes from xbox live" i can see why m$ would want to limit them.

Uhm.. publishers care about quality. The quality of the production. Why do you think PC is ridden with bad games? Because anyone and their dog can make something and put it out there. 9 out of 10 times it ends up being a piece of crap that's not worth the asking price.

No, what this does it means people who makes games that are awesome won't get all the profit.. they now have to give up a large chunk of that money to MS. This means they have less funds to develop their next game.. in other words indie devs are less likely to make games for xbox one and more likely to make them for ps4, pc, ios or android.

There are exceptions, kuraimen, but like I said by doing this Microsoft is doing more good than bad. For every great crowd funded and self published game there are like 10 really shitty ones.

It's pretty unclear really. If you called them a dictatorship that'd make more sense. Tho really all consoles are. The PC is for the freedom lovers :P

Ignorant people who don't understand the fact that socialism and dictatorship are entirely different things may "understand" your post. Are you banking on people being ignorant? Or is it that you too are ignorant?

"Xbox One wants to provide public services like education to everyone!" Socialist Xbox One.

Yeah because having more options and more freedom to work with is bad  indie developing is huge now and has revived the pc gaming industry. That M$ is closing that venue is living in the past and holding back gaming.

MS reminds me of Sony after the PS2. 360 was very successful compared to the predcessor, so they probably thinks they can get away with anything at this point.

Seeing all the crap announced so far, I won't be sheding any tears if X1 fails badly...

Oh please. It's a stupid game about digging dirt. The production values are like something you would see in 1994.
#40 Posted by balfe1990 (6747 posts) -

In a way, I'd prefer to have a curated marketplace that's about quality, not quantity.

If the store was overflowing with crap, like the Google Play store, it'd be a turn-off having to sift through the shit to find the diamond. Also, legitimately good games might get drowned beneath the wave of mediocre shovelware.

If MS had some sort of quality control process that allowed them to filter the good from the bad, and greenlight great games, without said game needing some big-name publisher or partner, that'd be brilliant. The ideal scenario.

If they mean genuinely good games can't get published because of some arbitrary rule that states they need a publisher, then that's very stupid.

Lol.

Microsoft just wants "publishion fee" of $1 million for each indie game as it is typical for the name of Microsoft. Again, they are being anti-competition and anti-consumer.

It was fun for like three months, and then I quit. I consider the game a novelty.

Honestly though, how many games on the indie scene are actually good? I just don't see this as some sort of doomsday thing.

Yeah, one year exclusivity. Don't be surprised to see it on PS3/Wii U soon.
