We already know that Microsoft are planning on making the Xbox One Scorpio the most powerful console ever made- but so far, apart from vague and ambiguous targets, Microsoft have only stuck to discussing the system's GPU performance (which we know will be an admittedly impressive 6 TFLOPs).

However, it seems like Microsoft may be going all out on the CPU front, too- according to a picture taken by someone on NeoGAF at AMD's CES booth, it looks like the Scorpio may be using the truly impressive Vega architecture that AMD just debuted for their CPUs, including the fresh Ryzen. If this is true, the Scorpio will have literally one of the newest, most advanced CPU chipsets within it, and far beyond most gaming PCs on the market. That, coupled with its GPU, is likely to make it a truly impressive beast of a machine.

Of course, it is unclear how Microsoft will sell such a device at mass market prices (will they swallow a loss like they did with the Xbox and Xbox 360, or pass the costs on to customers?), or whether such power even has any meaning given that all Scorpio games are also mandated to run on the standard Xbox One- but for fans of technology, it seems like the Scorpio may have a lot to offer.

I would take a wait and see approach to this one. The CEO of AMD has stated that semicustom ryzen will not be out until 2018.

Uhuhuhuh nice. That would indeed be quite the upgrade! Though if true, I honestly can't see how they'll keep the XB1 tagging along. It'd be like forcing all PS4 games to also run on the PS3 with such a massive difference in power.

If true, I think this may indeed be a brand new gen from MS and the XB1 games will be backwards compatible, rather than forwards compatible on the Scorpio. Alas, this is also just speculation on my part. E3 can be super fun this year!

I want this to be true so i could sell the PS4 and forget about having to deal with jaggies, low AF, dynamic res, fps drops in every single game etc. MS has my attention but after the Xbone and The Cloud lies, i'm skeptical.

I can see this thing selling for $500-$600 minimum, it's definitely not going to be a sales hit with that kind of pricing. I'm also interested to see how they approach developing exclusive games for the Scorpio.

The narrative of this generation is starting to give flashbacks to PS2-XBox era. Except this time MS is accomplishing more of what it initially set out to do - the OG XBox was supposed to bridge windows and console gaming, but wound up operating in isolation. Now MS has actually rectified that in a meaningful way

Cows be like

I might be tempted by a Scorpio if it has some interesting non-gaming features (I know I know) but as I will most likely be able to play everything on my PC still very much on the fence about it.

@Desmonic: Why? A gtx1080 is much more powerful than a Bone but we're still getting the same games on both platforms. All they'll have to do is decrease graphical settings, offer dynamic resolutions and the inevitable fps drops.

@silversix_: That's a GPU. In general, assuming you don't use it to do other funky stuff, yes you scale down stuff and not necessarily have to worry. You gotta remember that most 3rd party devs will use the PS4/XB1 as their "base performance" and PC's will generally be upgraded ports from that.

Not really as simple as that when you introduce a beefier CPU which could, from the top of my head, handle more NPC's, bigger maps, more complex physics calculations (and these in particular can make big, big differences), better AI scripts, help draw more complex scenes in conjuction with the GPU (think particle effects as a prime example), etc... a proper CPU upgrade can make a bigger difference than a GPU in terms of how complex games can or can't become on a given closed platform, like consoles.

That makes no sense that would just push the price right up. It makes more sense to have a lesser (but still very capable) CPU that still wouldn't bottleneck the GPU they're putting in there.

Take the loss, deliver the most powerful console of all time. They did this with Xbox and Xbox 360, not hard to see why they would want to do it again.

I still don't see how this will help MS catch up to Sony and the PS4. It will be pricey. And as an upgrade only. Maybe they should just wait until next gen before releasing it, and start prioritising games as well.

These are scary times with these mid gen upgrades. Would have felt much better if they had just announced PS5 and Xbox 4, they were both $500-600 suped up machines and they were both releasing with VR capabilities this holiday.

Xbox One S is likely my last Microsoft console. If Nintendo can get some 3rd party support to stick around on the Switch I might be jumping there- even if it's not everything.

@charizard1605:

It is just an upgrade since it has to drag the X1 around. Or do you really think developers will make games just for the Scorpio and loose money? No.

People who want shiny graphics on current gen games gets a PC. Games sell consoles, and there aren't any games that are worth having a Xbox for. Except Forza, but you can get a PC for that. The Scorpio is too late this gen with no games backing it.

http://digiworthy.com/2016/10/10/phil-spencer-xbox-scorpio-not-use-amd-jaguar/

Phil Spencer Hints Xbox Scorpio Will Not Use AMD Jaguar CPU

About two and a half years ago we started to look at a hardware refresh that we might want to do, which in the end led to the Xbox One S and Scorpio in terms of designs. We’d looked at doing something that was higher performance this year, and I’d say the [PS4] Pro is about what we thought–with the GPU, CPU, memory that was here this year–that you could go do, and we decided that we wanted to do something different.

So we looked at Scorpio and 4K and what I thought was a bigger step in terms of performance. It was something that we wanted to focus on.

The fastest shipped Jaguar/Puma CPU is factory clocked at 2.1 Ghz.

Polaris 10's chip area size is about 232 mm^2 which includes 8 x 32bit (256 bit total) memory controllers. That's 126 mm^2 for 8 core CPUs NB and extra 128 bit memory bus/controller.

It's a CPU we're talking about here. It's not power that will convert into improved performance. That GPU simply doesn't need a CPU that powerful. It will still be the most powerful console without a massively expensive CPU that serves no practical purpose.

The Scorpio will be a big jump from the Xbox one for sure, but people need to let go of notion that the difference between it and the Pro will be massive. Take an RX480 and slightly overclock it and you have yourself the Scorpio. A card of that caliber is not going to be running demanding games at anything over 4K30.

What both Microsoft and Sony need to do is implement more dynamic resolution in their games. I feel confident that Scorpio will be using a Ryzen variant for the CPU.

Both the Pro and the Scorpio should tide most over until 2021 when the next gen arrives, at that point 4K60Ultra will be the baseline with a few 8K games aswell.

It's a CPU we're talking about here. It's not power that will convert into improved performance. That GPU simply doesn't need a CPU that powerful. It will still be the most powerful console without a massively expensive CPU that serves no practical purpose.

At least it's not going to have bottlenecks.

I might be alone here. but i'm happy with my XB1 right now, so the Sorpio is something i don't really think of unless i see something written on here about it.

Having said that it will be funny that by the end of the year the cows will lose 2 of it's 4 advantages they have over lems, and we all know when they lose something they go nuts.

So this place should get lively come the Scorpio's release time, or maybe even sooner around E3 time.

Yeah it will be the first console this gen that hasn't (including the Pro). I just can't see them wasting money and pushing the price up on something that's bigtime overkill and gives them nothing back. It's not something I'm in the market for anyway (I already have a PC) just throwing my 5 cents in.

Scorpio is as redundant as a console can get if you have a gaming PC. This is a good thing as I hate having to buy consoles for exclusives.
