I think the reason the PS3 is so maligned is because Sony has been the undisputed champion of the gaming world for nearly 10 years now, and still is today thanks to the outrageously huge install base for the PS2. Sony is the king of the hill, and that makes them a very easy target for criticism.
That said, I think the PS3 is a great console. It's very advanced, well-built, runs quiet and quite cool and it apparently has no widespread hardware problems. It is outstanding electrical engineering and Sony did a great job designing it.
However, past console wars have never been about hardware & raw power. It has always been, and will continue to be, about software and price. Who has the games? And how cheap is the buy-in price to open myself up to that library? (ie. console price). Price & content are huge determinants to a console's success, and right now the 360 has that over the PS3.
Even though the Xbox was technically the superior console to the PS2 in every way, the PS2 still crushed it in sales using its little toe because it had the formula right.
This generation Microsoft has manuvered itself into this position of strength that Sony had with the PS2, and they seem pretty serious to continue this momentum.Â
