World of Warcraft Subscriptions Decrease By 800,000

Fall in subscribers attributed to the end of life of the current expansion.

Share.

By Jimmy ChampaneWorld of Warcraft lost 800,000 subscribers during the April-June quarter, publisher Activision Blizzard announced today in its latest earnings report. As of June 30, the total subscriber count was down to 6.8 million from 7.8 million as of this past February.

Why World of Warcraft Is My Favourite Game Of All-Time

03:19

The drop in subscribers is attributed to the end of life of the current expansion, and the decrease is in line with the last expansion's decrease during its transition phase.

Despite the slip in subscriber numbers, Blizzard says that revenues for World of Warcraft are up thanks to over 1.5 million pre-orders of the upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion. The release date will be announced very soon; remember, pre-ordering gets you an early boost to level 90. Be sure to check out IGN's preview of Warlords for more on how it's making the old game new again.

Attempting to sell gold power leveling 90 powerboosts, £1000 mounts, £1000 armours on top of a £20 monthly fee and an expansion pack for a near decade old game costing 300% the price of a full game could be part of the reason.

Realm Reborn for winners my friends.

Everyone is playing the vastly superior MMO that is FF14 ARR. Also I've said this for years, no MMO can be a WoW killer, just sit back and watch Blizzard kill it.

Yup...and I'm one of them.

Unless my Girlfriend wants me to play with her while we're apart I don't think I'll be going back to Azeroth any time soon.

Unless shit like Elder Scrolls Online as well (aside from obviously being superior) FF14 offers good value.

£49.99 for a game + £20 upgrade for locked class and mount + £9 month sub?

I'd love to live in that little fanboy bubble as a player of FFXIV myself... but lol no.... not even in the top 10 revanue.

And the content is currently crap. other than turn 2 .... barely anything challenging in the game.... and the stupid hunt system that has turned progression into a joke.... 1 year later and we still only have 1 4 boss 5 turn raid as progression.... utterly bad.

Meanwhile, they keep ploughing more and more easy content with no purpose as practically everyone outgears it all.... the last 6 odd dungeons have been a joke (difficulty wise) .... nothing to do but dailies, hunts and grind other classes.

The Primal EX's are good.... though near pointless to repeat unless you have a very tacky "collect all the coloured unicorns" fetish.

The game is a casual mess, and will never be flocked to. that being said... I enjoy it when I feel like killing some braincells in a pretty mmo.

I used to be hard core into wow and might even go back for a month just to see the expansion but mmos are just to time consuming. Especially one set up like wow where you have to keep playing and if you don't, you have to grind harder just to catch up

But like the article states, the pre orders for the upcoming expansion are already over 1.5 Million,so once it releases it will go up again,as usual.

@MBirdy88: If you're going by that 2013 MMO revenue report, then FF14 ARR wouldn't be on it cause it was released so late in 2013. Even then, there's 2 million subs so I have no idea where your got your BS source.

I really doubt you're in full ilvl 110 gear clearing savage mode coil. Considering we're getting content every 4 months is pretty awesome compared to other MMO's who are lucky to get 2 updates a year.

1) They do not have 2 million subscribers... they have over 2 million registered players who have a registered cd key. well he suggested its around 2.7 million at this point, but point is this includes all 1.X players who bought it and havn't touched ARR. and everyone who is not active subscribers.

2) Honestly... if "Savage Mode" is not a cop out in your mind then I don't think we will ever agree... as the point isn't sadist level difficulty to brag. its about a varied raiding end-game that is non existant. 6 months gaps.... with only 4 8 man bosses.... is absolutely crap for a PvE focused MMO. yes the primals and their extremes add to that. but no 24 man content worth a damn other than "looking for raid" level Sycrus tower nonsense that is pugged.

There is a reason next to no one streams it....

World Of Warcraft didn't invent that style of MMO, it merely popularized it.

As a player of the original Everquest, I'm more than familiar with this fact.

However...

if by "popularized" you mean turned a Ford Pinto into a Mclaren P1.

At times, WoW has had higher subscription numbers than all other major entries in the MMO genre COMBINED.

That's not accidental. Nor the result the mere marketing.

Blizzard made a product that apparently no other developer could touch.

There are rumors that Blizzard is working on Warcraft 4 . Few months ago , one of their employee , during live stream said "We have Warcraft 4 in the making" . Soon after that , players started to make threads about it and linked the video . That video was later removed by Blizzard and they didn't answer anything .

Whether it was a mistake or confirmation of next Warcraft game , we'll find soon enough at Blizzcon .

A lot of Blizzard's decisions as of the last couple years have been made with an eye on short-term revenue in favor of long-term.

That's their biggest problem in managing this game. They have essentially removed leveling, server communities, and dramatically lowered the need for party/raiding guilds to get gear so they could appeal to the casual gamer that wants to log in once a week when they're bored. Unfortunately the same audience of gamers that'll drop the game entirely if a new shiny game catches their eye.

It's not really any wonder that their subscription numbers have been declining for a few years now.

Blizzard undoubtedly are a world class developers but they are also some of the greedyest fuckers around.

When people are getting burned on World Of Warcraft and other cheaper alternatives arrive, many people probably will move on.

6.8 million subs for a game that came out in 2005. That's damn impressive.

It's even more impressive when you consider the massive amount of competition the game has had. So many other MMOs out there yet WoW still remains king.

Sadly its current state is really weird. The new content and expansion are solely focused on that existing fanbase. That is fine as they are the one still playing, but trying to start out as new player is damn near impossible. I tried. I tried leveling a completely new character to level 90. I made it to level 86 in nearly 6 days of in-game time. The grind is unbelievable. This is one game that is now only playable by those who have already invested the time.

The funny thing is that in like 5 years, where the numbers finally drop to 2 mln or less Blizzard will just retool it to F2P and have 20 mln players then :D

This is true. According to the sexually attractive Asain reviewer (a woman) you can use the thing with it for grinding.

Well no shit, it's almost been a year since 5.4 was released, with absolutely no new content since. This happened at the end of WOTLK and Cataclysm too. Subs will pick up again when WoD releases but I wish Blizzard would get their shit together and release expansions faster--WoD is going to release at least a year after Siege of Orgrimmar was released, which is pathetic.

I really don't care what ARR is doing with their free updates; I'm just saying there's always a big drop in WoW subscriptions between the end of an expansion and the launch of a new one because Blizzard still can't figure out how to launch expansions faster. If you want to know why nearly a million players unsubscribed, that's it--no new content in a year.

@princeofshapeir: Actually WoW subs have been dropping every quarterly for a good year if not more. I think there was maybe one gap when it actually went up briefly but went back down next quarterly. I use to be a big WoW/Blizzard fanboy but they have just been crap ever since Wotlk, WoD looks promising and I'll try it out but Blizzard is slowly killing off their cash cow and removing that "wow" factor it had from 2004-2007.

And in a few months when the expansion comes out the numbers will be right back up. Most of those are just getting in a rest before the expansion.
