After Sonic Mania, another updated Sega classic is coming to the Switch, this time a remake of a Sega Master System classic:

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is officially coming to the Nintendo Switch

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is officially coming to the Nintendo Switch

BY JOEY DAVIDSON | JANUARY 17, 2017

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap has been kicking up headlines for a few weeks now as a surprising, beautiful remake of the cult-classic from 1989. Everyone who’s played it has said it’s something special.

Now that something special has been confirmed for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo apparently met with the developers to bring the game to their newest platform, and they agreed. Aside from the PC, this is the first official confirmation for a specific console since the game’s announcement.

What about performance? Good news there, too!

In the post announcing the news on the game’s official page, DotEmu and Lizzardcube indicate that the game runs wonderfully on the Nintendo Switch.

The game plays fantastic on the Nintendo Switch! It runs at a smooth 60 FPS, the screen and colors in handheld mode are amazing, and it plays just as well in full HD when docked. We can’t wait to show you more!

Sounds good! Lizardcube and DotEmu are quick to indicate that they’re working on other platforms for the game, too, so stay tuned if you won’t own a Switch.

EDIT:

@Jag85: There's also Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, a spiritual successor to Wonder Boy coming out for the Switch.

http://monsterboy.com/

I've found 76 games announced for the Switch so far, though many are indies/ports. Both Wonder Boy and Monster Boy are announced as 'coming to consoles'.

I won't buy this on a switch (dynamitecop convinced me not to buy one) but it does look very good.

With the NES Classic Edition, online play added to NES/SNES games, Sonic Mania, Double Dragon IV, Super Bomberman R, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and now the return of Wonder Boy, this is a great time for retro gaming fans like me!

Now, let's make the retro gaming comeback even better with a new classic style Castlevania game, please.

Thanks for the update. I just looked it up:

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom Is Also Releasing On Nintendo Switch

That's two Wonder Boy games coming to the Switch, along with two Sonic games, Sonic Mania and Project Sonic. Good to know it has quite a few games to offer for retro Sega fans.

So.... Now Sega Fans will embrace Nintendo's approach? It seems like it, as both Sega and Nintendo have always prioritize Arcade Style games.

@Jag85: try harder. The switch is going to be a joke. If you look at their facebook page this game was playable at the PlayStation conference.

Thanks for that info, I had no idea. I was a Nintendokid. Not very interested, though. There are many indie games that looks more interesting.

It's not surprising seeing as many remember the genesis and not the Master System.

Although I think I may have gotten Monster Boy mixed up with Alex Kidd as a Flagship title, but Monster Boy was one of those "Big Name" titles for the system.

Yup, Alex Kidd was Sega's flagship before Sonic. Wonder Boy was more like Sega's equivalent to Metroid or Zelda, with the open-world and RPG elements.

I'll focus on this game alone, and the best answer is that Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is pretty much Zelda II with better gameplay, more balanced difficulty, none of the tedious grinding since you can buy new weapons and armor, and a gameplay mechanic where you take on different forms to complete the game.

It's a really great game, and worth checking out.

As for the Wonder Boy series as a whole, check out this link.

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/wonderboy/wonderboy.htm

Long story short, most of the games are side-scrolling Action Adventure games that share elements with Zelda II and refine them further. The first game is your standard platformer that has the honor of being the basis for the first Adventure Island, and there's another side scroller that take the fantasy elements of the later games but plays close to the first one.

I'm not sure how I feel about that art style. I loved this game back in the day. It was comfortably one of my favourite games on the master system. I will have to see it in motion I suppose.

On a side note this OP is a little disingenuous. It's almost claiming this is exclusive. It's not. It's already been announced for PC and will likely be ported to others too.

Neat, bit worried about the pricing though! No way i am paying a premium for a remake. Bit if they price it right and I end up buying a switch, I will definitely get this! Loved wonder boy back in the days....

I get the feeling the Switch is going to tap into the same craze that made the classic NES such a hit over the holidays.

Ultra Street Fighter II has a great feature that lets online players interrupt you during arcade mode. Just like the old days when you played on an arcade machine. This thing is going to be a beast at retail. Good luck finding one all year long.

I made a comparison gif of Sega's Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap and the reverse engineered remake.

The devs decided to do a remake but wanted it to have an authentic feel so they deconstructed the original game. You can read more about the process on their dev log.

https://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=50899.0 It's coming along so nicely.

I'll probably get it in June when it hits the PC. This, Monster Boy, Spark the Electric Jester, (and ofc Sonic Mania) are quietly also making 2017 an excellent year for 2D platformer fans.

Again I say fix the dishonest title. This game is coming out everywhere.

I have it on PS4, it is a wonderful remake. It's everything I hoped for, given it is the exact same as the original game but with new graphics. You can switch the graphics and sound to old style on the fly at a moments notice, and I've completed it twice already. Major plus to the company, hope they do Monster World next.

But fix that title.

I played this in 89' (Yes i'm old) and it was one of the greatest games of it's time. (along with Zillion and Kenseiden on Sega Master system). This is one of the game I bought a Switch to play. I love that this is a release that is a big deal for just a select few who were playing it back then like myself. It has been a real joy to play. I feel like i'm the 9 year old I was back then playing this gem all over again. It is especially nice that you can change to the 8-bit visuals and music at anytime. (And it is funny that I like the old music slightly better due to my nostalgia.) The new visuals are amazing and I switch back and forth constantly to be reminded of my gaming past. Epic game for the Switch and great to show people in handheld mode when you take it out of the house.
