Windows 10 Free To All Windows 7/8/8.1 Users

This right here is a legitimate megaton- if you have Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1, you can now upgrade to Windows 10 for free.The upgrade needs to be done within the first year, though, but that's the only fine print here.

Windows Phone 8.1 also qualifies.

Damn, Microsoft, you guys are getting aggressive here.

Have they said what the pricing plan is otherwise? My worry is that if it's a subscription service, this is a fine print "you get Windows free for a year but have to pay after that"

Its free for windows 7 users for 1 year

and free for windows 8.1 users forever

And then what happens a year later to those win7 users who upgraded for free for a year?

Do they get Win7 back or what? It sounds sketchy.

It sounds like they want to roll out Windows subscriptions. Too much misinformation floating around and too many windows threads in SW.

It makes sense if you think about it, If they are trying to push cross device interaction through windows 10 then the more people who have it the better.

What faster way to get lots of people using it than to free upgrade? (hint there isn't one)

It completely depends on how they handle it. If they handle it like they do the upgrades now, then you are going to have to call MS to release your key so you can reuse the previous windows key. Then you have reinstall the previous OS which is pretty tedious.

You have a year to upgrade not a years worth of use.

That's fair, the armaments haven't been loaded yet but it's airborne.

In that case, I'll just upgrade my Xbone to Windows 10 for free.

What are people confused about? This is a measure taken because people upgrading to windows 8 has been rather low. So by giving a free upgrade they are hoping to push the majority of people onto one (newer) OS version

Hopefully they will allow New 3DS windows upgrades too.

During Microsoft's Windows 10 live event today, a Microsoft executive said many Windows users will have a free upgrade to the new operating system for a year after its release.

The upgrade will be applicable for all devices running Windows 8.1 or Windows 7, executive vice president of Operating Systems Group Terry Myerson said. This includes users with Windows Phone 8.1. Microsoft is also promising full support once the upgrade is complete –– it's worth mentioning that this upgrade is only applicable for the year after release. After that, the deal runs out.

The company has yet to announce a release date for Windows 10. But stay tuned to IGN's coverage of the live event as more news rolls out.

Would they suspend your key? I have two copies of Windows 7. Could you not just dual boot Win 10. I know a lot of people wouldn't know how to do that. As far as Microsoft taking your Win 7 key... /comeon
