Poll: Will you be buying the New Nintendo 3DS? (120 votes)

Yes, I will be upgrading 23%
Yes, but not immediately 18%
Yes, I didn't care for the original 3DS, but this seems more of my type 7%
No 53%

The New Nintendo 3DS includes:

  • better 3D
  • second stick
  • NFC built-in
  • coloured buttons
  • more buttons (specifically, ZL and ZR)
  • better battery
  • now compatible with microSDCard
  • you can back up data on your PC via wireless
  • browser improved, now works with HTML5
  • CPU improved, makes browsing Miiverse / eShop much faster
  • you can switch designs now (covers)
  • Improved gyro sensors which aim and enhance the 3D effect
  • A rumored double the RAM and VRAM
  • Improved ergonomics
  • Better screen technology, including automatic dimming
  • Full backwards compatibility with the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo DSi, and the Nintendo 3DS

I guess as upgrades go, it's a hell of one, really. It's also everything I ever wanted from the 3DS, though I'm still not quite sure why they didn't just make this a full fledged successor already.

My question to you is, will you be buying one of these, or not? And if you are, will you be getting the regular variant or the XL variant?

@lordlors: quantity yes.

Quality hell no. Atleast as far as nintendo's first party titles are concerned

Unfortunately, 90% of the DS's quality came from third party games. Third party games, which are sorely lacking on 3DS.

@charizard1605: I'm not denying thats a big problem. Still nintendo keeping the thing afloat all this time is pretty damn inpressive in this mobile world

Sure, but it's also made the 3DS inarguably the weakest Nintendo handheld since... fuck, at least since the pre-GBA days.

Nah, I will just keep my firmware 4.2 3DS XL........for special reasons.....

#55 Posted by Kenny789 (10297 posts) -

Not interested. I'm perfectly happy with my Pikachu XL and Circle Pad Pro. The ZR and ZL button placement as well as the size of the second stick seem awkward. The only reason why I'd get this in the future is for the exclusive games but, to be honest, I'm hoping they will only be "enhanced" on the new systems and not purely exclusive. Admittedly, though this is great news and I like what I see and hear, I'm quite annoyed that they plan on making exclusive games just for them.

I can imagine this scenario taking place at a game store.

.

"Have you got 3DS in stock?"

"Yes we do, would you like a 3DS or a New 3DS?"

"Well, obviously I'd like a new one."

"Yes, so, which would you like?"

"Well, you said you have a New 3DS..."

"Yes."

"Well, of course I'd like it new."

"Yes, so which one?"

"One that isn't used."

"So, which one?"

"THE ONE THAT ISN'T USED."

"Well, they're both not used."

"Wait, slow down. You got a 3DS and a New 3DS. But they're both new."

"Yes."

"So why not say you have two New 3DS?"

"Because we just had someone buy one."

"WAIT, WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN? You're the one selling things!"

"That's right, and I just did."

"Okay, okay, OKAY. Frickin' new science mass sellin- So what's left?"

"A 3DS and a New 3DS."

"And they're both new?"

"Yes."

"So, you just said you had two New 3DS. And you sold one. And now you have two left?"

"No, I have one."

"Well which one's new?"

"Both of them!"

"Alright, smarty, I've had it up to here with this runabout fast-talking sales-pitching hooey. Who's your manager?"

"Yes!"

Yup I will. My nephew gets a neat previously loved 2DS and I get a new 3DS XL. Everybody wins. Spread the love people.

Unlikely.

#62 Posted by madsnakehhh (15288 posts) -

No, i already have a 3DS.

#63 Edited by freedomfreak (45011 posts) -

No. I'm gonna wait for the next revision where they add a third analog stick, and release a Mother collection for it exclusively.

Hell yeah I'm gonna buy one

I'm definitely getting it. I want the XL version. It just looks awesome and I love the fact it'll have Amiibo support. Can't wait honestly. Hopefully the States gets a release date soon.

I have 2 3ds' s so at this point the answer would be no... but if the right trade in deal were to pop up I could be persuaded. I'm a sucker for a good trade in deal.

@RyviusARC: That employee needs better training or should get a new job.

#68 Posted by Suppaman100 (4525 posts) -

Yep. Xenoblade and other future exclusives are hard to pass.

#69 Edited by osan0 (13206 posts) -

based on what i know so far....no. the hardware itself is not enough of an upgrade (its in a weird place of being better than the current model...but not by enough to warrant the expense). its not interesting like the wii and not mind blowing. its like a 3DS 1.2 rather than a 3DS 2.

of course of some of the exclusive games really grab my interest then probably. i already have xenoblade though (and heartily recommend it. one of the greats) so thats not a selling point for me.

as it currently stands though no. i will stick with my current model for now.

Apparently you've never heard of the famous comedy duo.

Anyone who has will get my reference especially the second last sentence in that post.

After the 3DS XL i will not buy any other nintendo system again .. not until they make a better online network, better interface, a real actual responsive friends list, a quality messaging system not the kiddy styled drawing shit they have right now as a messaging app, two dual analogs and one single screen.

So this one fixes all of that.

Now what?

Well, I guess it still has two screens, so you can use that as an excuse!

Your saying they have updated the entire current UI and made it quicker, faster and simpler? like no more drawing to talk to friends? no more manual refresh just to receive a message? yeah i doubt it, i dont have much faith on Nintendo like you do so i'll believe it when i see it whenever it comes out.

that tiny looking analog is not what i expected for a second analog

I would like to, especially if they bring GBA VC games to the device. I was planning on getting a Wii U, but am honestly more attracted by this due to the improved 3D effect and the fact there it will likely receive better support than the Wii U in the coming years. While it might be disappointing to see Nintendo making "New 3DS exclusives" for the console, this stop-gap 3DS is necessary in this era of smartphones and shows that Nintendo is willing to do what it takes to make the console relevant.

I know this is OT but would they happen to be Abbott and Costello?

@charizard1605: it seems like you're speaking in absolutes. Why don't we wait to see how they handle the current 3ds. I mean we still got pokemon, smash, bravely second and fantasy life and project steam coming

I don't mind hardware revisions, but when you introduce new hardware and go and split the userbase with exclusive content (and your next handheld is only a few years away) you can go fuck yourself for all I care.

#79 Posted by mooooo99 (1251 posts) -

Yup.. But not an ll, will go for a regular sized edition. I was going to pick up a 2ds but i will be holding off for a new 'new 3ds'. Those buttons!

Not in a hurry at the moment but would get it to play Xenoblade Chronicles because I missed out on the Wii version

Have you ever used an old school laptop with a nub? Let alone IBM Think Pad laptops (Now Lenovo Think Pad). The nub works a lot like a mouse, and have better accuracy than a standard track pad.

#83 Posted by gameofthering (10537 posts) -

No. I've barely played my 3DS since I got it on launch day (UK). About 200 hours total.

#84 Edited by Smallville0608 (86 posts) -

More than likely if it is indeed as good of an improvement as it sounds. I am overall not completely happy with the 3DS game library, and I hope it picks up quality wise to make my upgrading worth the investment. Great games, yes, but not enough in my opinion for the length of time the system has been out. I use my 3DS regularly.
