I'd still rather buy a hard retail copy than download a game.

Don't think their will be a need for any formats after Blu Ray. But if there is HVD is next in line.

I doubt we'll be seeing multi-terabyte games in our lifetime.

^ Digital distribution and browser games are then next big step. Games made specifically for consoles and/or PCs will disapear.

The 8th gen. of consoles will be the last one, after that it's (mostly) cloud gaming on iPhones, Laptops and stuff like that .

Somewhat funny that most lemmings simply can't admit that Blu-ray would be a smart thing to have on the next gen consoles. Skip from DVD9 to DD....

floppy discs ftw i think blu-ray would be mandatory for next gen as the analogue signal for tv will be cut for most of the world and a vast amount of people will upgrade to HD, and its a great way to stop piracy

Let me wait a few years and I'll get back to ya...

But seriously, it's too early to really know for sure. For all we know, another newer media format could pop up this year.

Not in the realm of optical media because, quite frankly, its a physical impossibility. If I were microsoft I would be using HD-DVDs next gen though.

I don't think so. Blu-ray will be big enough. Also I prefer a copy in my hand instead of one on my HDD.

It's a matter of market. With the huge amount of piracy going on with movies and games, it's only natural that the next step will be digital distribution rather than a hard copy. In time people like you will be neglected in favour of the people that just don't give a damn.

What sense does it make to use a dead format? By next generation Blu Ray will be dirt cheap. Hell it only costs Sony $8 for the Blu Ray diodes now.

Size might increase, but not as much as in previous gens (from a Sony prespective anyway). We might up to like quad-layer Blu-Rays (doubling capacity from 50GB to 100GB), Microsoft will need to be able to play Blu-Ray movies, and so will likely go with a form of Blu-Ray for games as well, but they might get something proprietary(I think that's the word I'm looking for). Nintendo isn't as big on media capabilities so they might go completely proprietary and ignore Blu-Ray, I don't know. It's important that data rates or whatever its called (the number of MB read from the disc per second) improve as well or the increased capacity won't mean as much.

All of you guys are saying Digital Distribution will be big next-gen, but how? Connection speeds still aren't that great (I'm just fine with my 1.5 Mbps connection) and how many games do you think you'll be able to fit on the Hard Drive? Unless it's a 250-500GB Hard Drive in every console, it'll fill up VERY quickly

LOL who wants games you can't sell if you get tired of them or they are terrible. I will never pay $60 for a game I can't get rid of if I decided to.

I feel there will be a move towards DD, like Steam. We've already seen full retail games offered on PS3, so it's not out of the realm of possibility, though. As a collector, though, I want the hard copy.

Sony: If they introduce a new format with the PS4 I will not buy it until prices come down. Unless there is an absolute must have killer app launch title... Microsoft: DD alone would not be cool. Everyone doesn't have internet access. For those who do, downloading full games like Halo 4 (MP and SP) would become a hassle sometimes. If they allowed most games available for d/l as well as in store purchases it could work out I guess. But for now DD is best for 2 gig games at the most with our standard internet connections. Next-gen games will take up even more space than they do now. Until faster internet connection are standard in homes, pure DD wouldn't work. I for one wouldn't buy a full game like Halo 4 or Gears of War 3/4 over the internet.

DD is dumb for consoles. It has WAY more downs than ups. And the only up I can think of is no piracy. I'd rather prefer a copy of a game that I can take to some one elses house and play etc.

You can buy 1TB HDD for $100. By the time the next gen of consoles are released, they will be less than $50. So DD is feasable. Also, a 1X download is something most users will not frete about, especially if they allow active downloads whilst playing. Faster internet speeds to households, by that time, will have also increased. Couple that with the factthat DD is much more profitable for the console makers and publishers and there is no reason why the next generation of consoles wont go DD
