Poll Will Super Smash bros for Wii U save the uh... Wii U? (13 votes)

Yes 8%
No 92%

The smashing success of the risky venture into portability with Super Smash bros for 3DS has made people turn their heads and reevaluate their opinion on the effect that Super Smash Bros for Wii u will have.

So now the question is, with the 3DS version, which will not be the primary and most polished version, doing well and causing fire with review scores like Forza horizon 2, DO YOU THINK it's possible that Smash could sell million on getting a Wii U?

3DS Estimated units sold, 8 million within 2 months based on trends, 3.5 million Consoles being moves.

Wii U estimated units based on pre-orders and trends 11 million, with 6.7 million moving consoles.

This would put the Wii U at around 18 million consoles by the end of the year if we assume the trend increases by 200% on the holidays and black friday.

Smash Bros can do anything, it could even save the Vita.

Your predictions are way to optimistic for both versions of the game. Both versions of the game will have ltd's anywere from 2-5 million by the end of the year. The WiiU will do better than last year(above 600K in NA in december is possible). The 3ds will sell a bit better or worse than last year also.

No it won't, one game alone can never save any system, and while Smash might cause a bump or even a sustained marginal positive effect on Wii U sales, it won't by any measure 'save' the platform.

@super600: My predictions are based on current pre-order and sales terends assuming they continue the same way until january along with a minimal bump for December and November.

Halo.

Has never 'saved' (or had to save, really) a system. The Xbox was a competitive enough product that people felt comfortable picking it up for Halo.

I don't know. Didn't Melee account for a large portion of GCN's sales? There were/are so many people that own the GCN just for that game.

Melee was also a 'launch' game, before the Gamecube lost so much steam that it became an undesirable system to own.

I don't care if it's saved at this point... it has enough good games coming out to warrant it imo. and they are games unique to it.... not variants of TPS games or racers that have been done to death in many formats.

Nope. Will get a great bump in sales, but still fall short of the current gen 8 console leader SONY and the world's most powerful video game system to have ever been built, the PS4.

That's true... Man GCN's launch line-up was legendary...

Halo was a lunch game, and it was the game most Xbox owners brought for over one year. The system would have died without it selling maybe 2 million on marketing hype at best. Halo 2 is also a game that saved the console, because software sales of other games did not pick up until Halo 2's success, and it attracted more PC developers.

Although undoubtedly without that game it probably would not have made it to 20 million. That was the game everyone was buying to get other games. Not to mention after that point where they stopped shipments temporarily. Of course, at launch the Gamecube had other games that got the system to sell million at first outside of melee. Melee just ended up being the long term sales men.

GC did bad .. With Smash or not ! Noone could save GC , noone did actually. That was sad since , for my taste , GC was the best Nintendo console uptodate after SNES.

Save from what? Being a low selling platform for a somewhat specific audience? Nope

People who own or intend to purchase a Wii U most likely know what they will get, and Nintendo has already confirmed that they are committed to support its fan base with software and partnerships throughout a normal generational lifespan (as they should in order not to alienate the few who are currently giving them cash), so don't worry about "saving it".

Wii U will probably end up as one or maybe the biggest console (sales) failure ever out of the big 3.

No game will single-handedly save the Wii U, but each great game is another piece of a growing library that will help improve things. It's release also has no strategic timing, they're totally missing the benefits of a well timed holiday release, they instead gave that to the 3DS.

As for myself, I'm sure looking forward to it.
