So 480p in 4:3 mode is 640 X 480. Wii also has a 16:9 mode, now does that stretch and keep the same the resolution and scale the image, or does it up the resolution and scale?

Basically, is Wii's maximum resolution 852 X 480 or 640 X 480?

Playing games on my computer at 852 X 480 with a centered (and smaller) view this resolution looks perfectly fine and not really lacking like 4:3 does, so it might change my mind in buying Wii if it supports this resolution.

I'm pretty sure most Wii games render to anamorphic 640x480 when they do widescreen.

I remember reading that only some are anamorphic and most are true widescreen. But I think that refers to scale or ratios more than resolution

All I know is that Wii games on average look worse on my TV in wide screen, than they do in 4:3 ratio.

Anamorphic just means that the pixels aren't square...in other words the image is stretched horizontally. Even when you do this you can still have a proper in-game aspect ratio, since that doesn't have anything to do with the resolution. For instance DVD's always use anamorphic 720x480 for widescreen, even though that resolution is close to 4:3.

Yeah, I was a bit unsure about that. Still, I'm surprised I haven't found anything on Google yet about the resolution.. Anyone know the answer?

Maybe you don't have the settings right.

720x 480, but the frame buffer chip actually allows up to 854x480. It also does have (as u stated) anamorphic widecreen, but only when GC games are being run.

Looks perty pixey when upscaled, I just use it with a small sdtv and pretend is hd, is a pretty sharp trinitron last of its kind.

Why 720X480? That's not 16:9.

720x480 is a DVD resolution, most Wii games I've seen render to 640x480 (including SMG). They do get scaled to 848x640 when sent to the TV, so when you capture a frame it looks like this.

well, on my tv, in WS, wii looks better and in 480p. I also turn the sharpness all the way down to soften the look.
