Ok, Wiis have been remarkably reliable...so far. Only a very small percentage of hardware problems. The yellow light on the Wii is only the "standby" mode. The Wii still gets warm in that mode and the power is never completely off. Now, it has been said to keep it in this mode so you can get updates for WiiConnect24. However, you can still get updates without the yellow light on. Disabling the yellow light will ensure your Wii never gets warm when you aren't playing it. You have to go to WiiConnect options and then turn off standby.

My friend's Wii died recently, and I've read a few reports on Metroid2002.com forums of Wiis beginning to die as well as disc-read errors. Obviously, this problem is still relatively small, but could pose a problem later on for anyone who keeps Wii in standby mode. I've always kept my Wii in standby mode when not playing, but now I'm wondering if this will make Wii have a much shorter life.

I turned it off a long time ago just to be safe.

Thanks for the heads up, anyway.

I'm an eviromentalist and I unplug the Wii after using it.

I usually play for like an hour a week, and then unplug it, to reduce a fire risk, to reduce the risk of injury to the Wii, to save money, and to save the enviroment. =)

The stand-by mode is really irritating, I really don't like coming back to a hot system so I always unplug the power cord from the system when I'm done with it.

I'll worry about it if it becomes a big problem.

But really, I've knocked my wii over and yanked it foward while I'm playing and nothing happens. You do that with a 360, you can say good bye to whatever is in the disc drive.

It was an extremely small problem at launch, but there is a potentially bigger problem for anyone who has had a Wii since launch and has had it in stand-by mode when not in use. The more time passes with stand-by mode on, the more likely the Wii's lifespan is cut short.

wii connect24 is a joke. They hyped it, but never really saw it through. Oh well. I use standby mode to charge my PS3 controler.

Yeah same. I noticed my Wii getting a little hot when I had it on standy for a few days.
