Why Single Player Games, With Online, Are Mostly Dead.

My friends, I'm playing Max Payne 3. It's pretty good.

Yeah, I did. A long time ago, but I felt like shooting people in the face again, and today I'm not going outside to do it.

So, I'm playing Max Payne 3. Max just got bald. Shaved his head, which is offensive to actual bald people like Larry David.

I like how people with a bunch of hair on their head are happy they're "confident". Try and be fucking confident when you're bald. That's something Larry David said, which also makes me mad, considering you should be watching Curb Your Enthusiasm rather than reading this shit.

Point is, why do they keep shoving multiplayer in these SP focused games? What's the point? You get a few sheens that hop in. Yeah, I can shoot people! Get XP! Prestige!

But it dies faster than any analogy I can come up with. It's wrong. Yeah, sure, developers just be like "adds value, yo". Same with Tomb Raider. Bunch of mulltiplayer map packs, and not a single SP DLC. **** that, and stuff.

MP is used so they can pump out DLC. A few maps is a lot easier to make than an hour of story. It's also used to combat piracy on all platforms.

Yeah it be nice if it was a solo only game, and people judged the game on the quality (or perceived quality of the game) as opposed to gameplay per square inch.

At the same time: it also be nice if some of these MP heavy games stop bothering with their shitty attempts at a campaign. Why the **** does Battlefield even have a singler player? why the hell did Titanfall even pretend to have a campaign? How much do you have to hate yourself to actually want to shoot aliens in the face with Masterchief for the umpteenth time? Why even make a Killzone campaign if you won't allow the player to slaughter Rico?

I want it both ways. Sp games that don't flirt with pointless mp (Wolfenstein The New Order, solo fps, didn't even waste its time with mp, even if Return to Castle Wolfenstein was dope in mp), and MP games to just be mp games. Not that I don't mind games that can do both productively, but those are rare instances and not the status quo.

Back on topic, they are mostly dead because the multiplayer in single player story driven games are generally after thoughts where as games like CoD have multiplayer as the priority.

I agree, champ. It's BS. Killing Rico would be sweet. But yeah, funnily enough, insane amounts of money go to the SP portions of COD/BF. We need Kevin Spacey to do this.

And I agree, The Last Story had Online Multiplayer (which is dead now unless you hack your Wii and had people to play), but I could never understand why since I bought that game purely for the Single Player.

Same with The Last of Us, Uncharted I did get solely because of the Multiplayer in 2, but I stayed on board after finding out the Single was AMAZING, So with The Last of Us I bought it for the Amazing Single Player I knew Naughty Dog would provide, heck even Reviewers would tell you that in fact you would be surprised to even KNOW there's a Multiplayer mode for The Last of Us. I sure was, I keep forgetting it's there! Wonderful 101 has a Multiplayer, but it's not Online and even if there was one would you even notice? I didn't know that game had Multiplayer either until I looked at the box.

So Yeah there's plenty of games out there that were marketed for the Single Experience, but somehow someway they have Multiplayer in it and it's largely ignored because why would you play the Multiplayer? Team Deathmatch for my RPG? That's not what I want to play! I want to laugh and cry and get my adrenaline running in the Story, not play Call of Gears of Halo Theft Auto Online Multiplayer. So Leave these things OUT in these types of games, No one's gonna play them, because NO ONE WILL KNOW IT'S EVEN THERE!

I think it's an unfortunate scenario when the multilayer popular games spread their influence on other smaller studios who felt the need to have multiplayer to stay competitive. But as we seen in recent years, some developers are starting to focus their efforts much more, I hope the trend continues as focus helps them create a much better product than trying to cover a series of checklist

I don't remember who said it, but it kinda went like this.

"Make a game so good that People wouldn't want to sell it."

Multiplayer doesn't add to Replayability to the game. Why do people keep going back to games like Megaman or Zelda? Why do we continuously play Shadow of the Colossus or Mass Effect over and over? I know many of us Utilized the heck out of Final Fantasy's Multiplayer right? That's why we come back! Totally!

No it's because those games were amazing, We play them over and over so we can enjoy what we played over and over. Mass Effect has multiple scenarios depending on your choices that's enough of a reason to go back over the game again, Final Fantasy has a long story, maybe you missed something the first time through. Megaman is an enjoyable game that can be finished way faster than when you first played. People are still finding Glitches and Faster Times to Beat Ocarina of Time.

You don't need Multiplayer to have someone justify playing a game again and stopping them from going to gamestop to trade in their game. You just make a Game that's so enjoyable that they wouldn't want to trade it in. If they do then you probably made a boring game. (or the gamer just didn't care)

I didn't read the post, but devs are wasting their time when they do multi player for a sequel when the game started out as a single player experience. I didn't even bother to play tomb raiders multi player nor bioshock 2's and I'm sure there might be a lot of people that do the same. Reason why is because the modes usually are very generic and safe with little innovation, which is why the multi player dies off faster than normal. .

A lot of gamers just get bored and want to try new games so it only make sense to see old games get empty after a long time ( 2 years i think is max for a game that isnt CoD ).

to this date i still play CoD4 and MW2 and im always surprised by how easy it is to find players to play against online in these games, seriously CoD is a monster of a franchise.

Single player focused games will generally have shit multiplayer and it generally shows.

As a kid, I was happy with one game for months at a time. If anything, I'm more unfocused now.

I long for those days again.

I just know about far too many games nowadays, and have more money to spend than ever before.

I thought MP in Max Payne 3 was actually fun coz it rewarded true skill over twitch reactions.

There wasn't a single soul. Checked all the game modes. Soft lock and free aim lobbies. Nothing.

I personally quit playing when I found out that higher level players, those that were able to put more time into the multiplayer than me, had access to some crazy weapons.

That killed it for me, the weapons they had access to were just way better than low level weapons.

Perhaps that killed the MP for more people than just me.

Worse than that, I launched Titanfall yesterday and couldn't find a game. That's a game with no singleplayer to speak of (according to Respawn, people only care about MP) and even the online campaign had difficulties because newer players were unable to find matches at times.

Yeah, I see what you mean. And it's not just MP's MP(HAHA) that pulls that stuff. Happens all over. Higher levels get access to better equipment, which makes sense, but it's not exactly easy for newcomers.

****. That's messed up. Especially for Titanfall. Crazy how going MP only isn't full proof. The entire game is dependent on its userbase. I just didn't expect Titanfall to go so fast.

I barely if ever touch the multiplayer in single player games. That includes COD and Halo and Mario Kart.

I agree, which is why 99% of SP games dont need MP. They die quickly because people move on so quickly to the next one and nothing sticks quite like BF or COD.

Well, I'm sure the game is not fully dead and players could still be found at better moments (evening)

But yeah, when a player buys Titanfall right now and he wants to play the campaign it would be fucking stupid if he finds no players to play with him.
