Why is Destiny rated T?

I figured I would bring up this topic because every time I tell someone the game is rated T they always look at me weird, as if unexpected.

I've encountered games like this in the past like Metroid Prime and Goldeneye, which have shooting and death at every turn, but somehow manage to be rated T, unlike most shooters which are rated M, obviously.

My understanding is that things like dismemberment which is common in games like Quake and Gears Of War, aren't present in games like Goldeneye, which is why they fit into their respective ratings. But why is it then that a game like Perfect Dark is rated M? Or Halo being rated M which has no red blood(minus UNSC NPC), dismemberment or sexual content, which is shared between Destiny, yet they are given completely different ratings?

Please bring your opinions because I would like to hear the communities view on the ratings and the games I mentioned above!

Killing and death is present in Lego games , so i think the game needs a "E" rating just to mess with parents.

Oh that's easy, so Bungie/Activision can get the dump parents to buy there 12 year old kids Destiny and labeling it T-rating and if Destiny was M-rated, the parents wouldn't buy this game for there kids. And hey, it work. Kids all around the world are enjoying Destiny and parents will buy DLC just to keep there kids happy :D

It isn't just the visual content. The themes and story content, of which Destiny had very little com into play also.

Destiny can get pretty violent from times to times but I will say that Destiny has some good scares like on the Moon dealing with the insects humanoid enemies. That said, parents theses days don't even bother to look at the description on the ratings and assume that T-rating is a sign that it's okay for your kids younger then 12 to play this game. And it should be noted that in most Anime games do in fact get away with it being T-rating with partial nudity and again, some parents don't look at the descriptions.

I think we're on the same page, that's why I was skeptical about Halo being M.

@mariokart97: Okay all snark aside, I always felt that the first Halo game should have been rated T, not M cause that game was hardly violent and very minor blood. Halo's M rated is hardly a big deal Now then it was a few years ago so anyone can actually just play the game now.

Thank you this is the response I was hoping for lol. The only detail I actually just remembered was that you could continuously melee the dead enemies and they would keep emitting more and more blood...but I agree

TC there's no reason to go into full defense mode every time someone shits on something in SW.

I'd say the violence is stronger than in games like Metroid. You see people getting impaled and stabbed in the face in Halo. You don't see that in T rated games usually.

I totally see your point, Halo is a bit more edgy with the violence. But characters are impaled like Rundas in metroid prime 3: corruption, and though there is more blood I'm almost thinking metroid may be a bit more violent than one would think

Ha, freedomfreak hitting the nail on the head, and then just pissing off the TC.

The flood.

Pretty much it's graphic gore, disfigured bodies, and guts exploding, but people just seem to forget about that.

Combine the flood levels with a modest amount of swearing and normal violence from everywhere else, and it comes out to M. It is fairly tame compared to other M rated games, but M nonetheless.

Should be rated "G" for garbage.

This dude explains why and it only makes perfect sense, to cater to as many people as possible, Activision style.

The violence in Destiny is very far fantasy. It's like Transformers, lots of action, but its all bloodless and unreal.

The violence in Halo is a bit more realistic. Even though it's no where near the level of Gears of War, its definitely more bloody then the average T rated game.

If that were the case, then Call of Duty would have toned itself down years ago.

Depends on the ESRB. Destiny would need more blood and gore to be rated M.

I've debated the Perfect Dark/Goldeneye rating difference before.

Goldeneye had red blood and weapon violence

Perfect Dark added language and alien blood/violence

But also, I think by then the ratings were getting a little more strict.
