@starwolf474:

I do believe there is more to it than that though since those charts are generally there to let you know which resolution to buy. Most televisions are now 1080p and regardless of distance, you will still be viewing a scaled picture.

If you have 720p and 1080p material side by side in below optimal viewing distances, you aren't going to see a difference however native content really means a lot. This means all Xbox One owners should not own 1080p televisions.

It isn't. Most pc gamers just play at 720p and turn on 16XQAA. Runs better, looks better.

Because it's 2014 and should be the norm by now. I know lems have low standards but the fact a 2013 console is $500 to play games is 720p is laughable. Even 1080p is getting a little old as I play some of my PC games at 1440p. Stay butthurt lems.

BAM!

I love this “1080p is so much better” irrelevance.

Only reason not to upgrade to 4k is no hdmi 2.0 and no displayport 1.2 hdtv's. These next gen consoles I hope will upgrade to hdmi 2.0 or the upconversion to 4k is really going to suck. LED 1080p hdtv's finally got the lag time down in game mode and the picture looks decent. I hope to upgrade in 2016 when 4k hdtv's have hdmi 2.0,usb 3.0 and local dimming with no lag. I am also considering OLED 1080p if there is not much 4k content by then.

In either case I want a 1080p 60fps native signal from my console no upconversion bs. I usually sit close to my display so I want the best picture possible because I want the best display.

I played these games on pc at 2k with mods so no it was not horrible. Also when these games came out 720p was the norm on hdtv with some people like myself with 1080p plasma.

I don't know; I'm not sure my tv even does 1080p, so it's not an issue for me. I don't really understand the 30 FPS vs 60 FPS thing too; I can't really tell the difference, but then again I've heard that it's more important for online multiplayer, and I don't touch that. I can tell when the game starts to slow down and the frame rate drops extremely low (not sure what the FPS is exactly because I don't know how someone could eyeball it, nanomachines probably if MGS has taught me anything).

I do not like 720p, if I can play a video game in 1080p then that would be nice.

The best video games are not 1080p

You mean on console cause on pc 2k is the standard on some games I drop to 1080p max settings 120fps. I have to upgrade this year when the next round of gpu's come out. Most likely I will go 4k on my pc 2015 the latest depending on games.

Because as we've entered yet another generation of nearly identical consoles, rather than accept it and talk about the games, we'd rather latch on to any miniscule difference and blow it out of proportion.

The gap is not as small as you think. Any non native 1080p signal would have to be upconverted. Upconversion makes the picture soft and produces image glitches more so on fast moving pictures aka video games. These problems will be amplified when the jump to 4k happens.

Im not suggesting the consoles are wholy identical, but we're still VERY early in the life cycle of two machines that are still being explored. They are close enough in specs where game development will be as close as we've ever seen in multiplatform games... I think sony will flex some more muscle over exclusives, though that is entirely up to the developers ability.

as for 4k... hmm, you think that'll be the norm a few years from now?

Obviously most people do not upgrade till what they have breaks. However the price and content for 4k should be there. I would have made the jump to 4k but the standards are not set yet and there is no content. I have no doubt by 2016 all that will be sorted out. More importantly the price of 4k hdtv's are falling fast. A quality 4k hdtv should be hundreds in 2016 as it is a cheap 4k smart tv cost a little over 1k now.

LOLWUT.

I'm aware of that Seiki 4K set that is actually much LESS than $1000, not even sure that's a "smart" tv - and I think there is some asterisks next to it's classification as a 4K set (I think it's a 4K panel, without the necessary chipsets and inputs or something so it's limited to 30hz). I'm not aware of any actual good 4K smart TV's under $2000 - most of the 55" ones seem to be in the $2500-3000 range - with prices going up rapidly for larger sizes.

However in 2016 it should be pretty mainstream. Even the Samsung and Sony smart 4K should be around $1000 by then. 4K will be more interesting once the 75" and above sizes start getting more like $2000 (semi-affordable) - instead of $10,000 (totally not affordable).

The superbowl will be broadcast in 720p................for that reason alone I am not watching. I would rather kill myself than be subjected to anything lower than 1080p. On second thought I think I'll watch. 720p is still pretty great.

I personally don't get why in the great USA all we get is 720p or 1080i 60hz. 1080p should be the standard but noooo 720p is what we get argh.

That's basically the case, and that's why it tends to matter more on two foot diagonal monitor placed two feet in front of you than on a 42 inch tv placed 8 feet in front of you.

Sorry to state the obvious for some, but TC seems to be legitimately pondering the question. 1080p had been reached decades ago. It's the question of balancing framerate with resolution while advancing technology (better looking graphics, networking, AI, etc.). Technology is advancing and thus demands more from the machine. So while we enter "next gen", we can produce better graphics. But, we still might be stagnant with FPS, or even go backwards because devs might feel more pressured to produce "next gen" effects (such as better particle systems, scope of the environment, etc.). If they push it too far, their frames will drop as a result. To combat this, they can reduce the resolution of the images. Thus, they have a playable games that has a lot of neat effects going on.

Realistically, this depends on how close you sit next to your screen and how big it is. PC enthusiasts often brag about being able to produce higher resolution images, but it's ironic because they actually need to produce higher resolution images due to how close you normally sit to the PC monitor.

In my personal set up for my lounge room (size of the TV and how far I sit from it), I only need 720p. If it goes any higher, I won't actually be affected by it. On the other hand, for my PC, I would need to keep the resolution settings higher to get a good looking display.

FPS matters depending on the kind of game you're playing. If there is a lot going on (with lots of animations, etc.), 60 FPS would be better. Otherwise 30 is fine.

Because two years ago, less than 720p was a blurry mess. Now less than 1080p is a blurry mess. Nothing happened with my eyesight, but just the emergence of a another resolution makes the previous get blurry

Yeah, I'm out of the loop.

Clearly your out of the loop. The problem with 4k tv's is lack of a 60hz input the panels themselves are 60hz but they only accept a 30hz signal besides panasonic that has hdmi 2.0 support. The next gen consoles also don't have hdmi 2.0 or displayport 1.2 so gaming on 4k is 30hz tops then upconverted to 4k 60hz.

A TV from a brand I've never heard of, that "ships in 2 to 4 months", and has NO REVIEWS on Amazon. Seems legit.

Yeah, I'm out of the loop.

On System Wars, nothing is a big deal, until consoles can do it.

General rule of thumb.

That's the one that was already discussed.

There are some huge caveats with that set being a 4K television, it is lacking the proper HDMI spec (and probably chipsets). It can only display 4K and 30hz, from my understanding at 4K it can basically only be used as a PC monitor. I'm not even sure that TV will "play nice" with future 4K TV signals or formats.

It is still semi interesting to me for how cheap it is, but being an "off-brand" and not a true 4K set to me it is not in the same discussion as the Sony and Samsung 55" models that run closer to $3000. I actually saw smaller version of that TV for like $600, but like I said even at that price it would be more of a curiosity to purchase for cheap access to 4K now (before there is actually any 4K content). However I don't see it as something anyone would actually want to use as a 4K TV in the future. For me I'd feel like I was just tossing money away, knowing this product is basically guaranteed to NOT be "future proof".

I think it will be at least 2015 before we see the real mainstream brands hitting th $1000 barrier (for a 55" or above set). I'm talking Sony, Samsung, LG, Vizio, etc. Although after doing a little bit of research, Vizio is claiming they will have a 50" that starts at exactly $1000. So we will see.

Well, to be honest PC gamers brag about such and such new technology for a while then it becomes common place and the bragging stops. Then a decade passes. Consoles then get such and such technology that the PC has had for ages and consoles gamers go crazy, completely disregarding and contradicting their previous statements of "we don't care/don't see a difference" back from when PC gamers were bragging. PC gamers then go "I told you so", console gamers get annoyed and this thread is the result.

The only LOL is that xbone has games at LASTGEN and mobile resolutions, lems are just too slow to comprehend it.

...or you're just too stupid to differentiate both.

So,you're telling me that running a SNES game at 1080p is the same running Killzone:SF at 1080p cause both are 1080p?

lems sure are slow . im talking about resolutions and xbone is nothing but a blurfest with 720p.

Is just a number people like to brag about, just like they did when it was about bits, about RAM, about storage space, etc...in the end is just a number that doesn't make that much of a difference.

I wished people cared more about games being released full of bugs and having to use "day 1 patches" than about the 1080p. Really... i always see people asking developers, is it gonna be 1080 and 60frp ? rather than is the damn game gonna be playable when i buy it?
