Do North Americans just buy Xbox because Microsoft is an American company? Do Japanese buy Sony and Nintendo because they're Japanese companies? There's also the stereotype that Asians are more intelligent and as an American, I can assure you that I've heard plenty of stereotypes that Americans lack intelligence. Maybe there's some truth to it? If Japanese are smart enough to avoid the Xbox, I'd say they're pretty intelligent. The fact that it's so successful in America really isn't making a good case for our intelligence as a country. People in Europe and Asia probably laugh at us because we'll eat up any crappy product just as long as it's made in America.
News flash, the Xbone is struggling everywhere. It just had a price drop in UK due to poor sales, it's practically dead in mainland Europe and it's getting manhandled in its home territory (Have you seen Amazon US rankings lately?). MS are selling at a lower price than PS4 with free games and it's still getting bodied in its home turf.

It's mainly because handhelds are hugely popular in Japan due to very small living constraints. Other areas are worse than others. I had a friend from Korea who said that he and everyone he knew in Korea only gamed on handhelds because no one wanted to stay jam packed in their houses to game on consoles. He said that way of thinking is hugely common over there.
Japan is massively ethnocentric. Any product category in Japan that has well entrenched Japanese companies is dominated by those companies. The non Japanese brands that do well are successful because they do not face serious domestic competition and are typically worldwide iconic brands with long histories or prestige cache.
Besides being American platform with no games catering to Japanese sensibilities, it's a console and not a handheld.
I keep saying, take that Milo tech demo, make it a Japanese schoolgirl instead of a little boy, Microsoft will be swimming in yen like Scrooge McDuck.
Maybe they do look down on American tech, then again I hear they love iPhones, but maybe they simply refuse to buy Samsung phones because they know they were probably made by Japanese expatriots in South Korea, as if that's a greater insult than buying American goods. Would go a long way in explaining how they don't like Gangnam Style, which is absurd because everyone loves Gangnam Style.

Nope. There is that cultural difference and Japanese society is still insular in nature (especially since most of them can't understand English). 3DS is doing fine in NA. Vita just lacks games that appeal to people like Pokemon.

the biggest reason why the X-1 isnt selling in Japan is because there is no games that appeal to them. A lot of the games that it has, can be played on PC/PS4 so they don't see the purpose of purchasing the X-1. Even their Japan exclusive games are not something that says "Must Have"
