Why do people say the Souls games are ugly?

They both have a terrific art design, and the technical aspect isn't awful, either. the only time I see something and go "that's not great looking" is with the human character models up close... Other than that, the games animate very well and have great art design. But I've heard a ton of people say that the games are ugly. Why is that?

I'm not a fan of every environment. I know it's supposed to look depressing and dark, but man, if something looks ugly to freedom, it is ugly.

Amazing art direction yes but the engine looks like something from straight late 90's. Now imagine if this art direction was present but the engine used was something like what CDPR uses in TW3. Im hoping that if Demon's Souls 2 is truly coming to ps4, it uses an engine that looks next gen cuz im tired of playing the best rpg evar but also one of the ugliest games around.

It looks good when you mod it so it runs 60FPS and 1080p.

I do not think people say it looks ugly? Never heard about that.

I have heard that it is really sad that the Console version of dark souls (and by that likely demon's) has very compressed textures, which seem to be higher resolution then the overall games, and Thus in reality they would look better then they do on console (for reference see the PC version unlock of the resolutions.

I think the general consensus is that the enemy design on average looks pretty good (and are nice reinventions of D&D monsters just a bonus bit of information).

The level designs range from subpar (as in ps2 sub par) to pretty nice. But most games have a certain range of the visual quality of the maps).

The design is stellar but technically, they look pretty awful.

Absolutely, that's my favourite way to play it, especially 60fps.

In general, I like the overall aesthetic of the game.

In that recent sale I picked it up for my Lem60 as well. Sure I'm missing out on about 80% of the pixels per second versus the PC version, but it's acceptable.

From a technical standpoint they leave a lot to be desired and that's what people complain about.

They have shit textures and used to have a pretty shit framerate.

Artistically it comes down to preference and can't really be argued. Some people don't like dark,dank worlds and I understand that. If I didn't then I'd hate how the Souls games looked too.

Dark Souls on consoles has terrible frame drops.

@Salt_The_Fries: I only have issues with frame rate in two areas: unflooded New Londo Ruins and sometimes Blightown (although I don't have as much of an issue as some people say they do). Other than that it plays fine.

Low poly horribly textured mess of a game.

Because a great many people believe, opinions can be facts, objective, right, wrong,. They will say things like so if I look outside at the sky with my brother, he says the sky is blue and I say the sky is red with green stripes, I'm not wrong? But when discussing movies, books, music, games, it really is subjective to individual tastes.

Nah, they're shitty looking games. The art design is garbage other than a few monsters and the actual graphics are even worse.

@FPSfan1985: I find that as long as you don't look at things super up close then it looks fine.

Then again, I must be a pleb consolite and have no idea what I'm talking about.
