Why are PC games never hyped like console games?

Console games get laughed at for flopping but PC exclusives never do, because they're rarely hyped by their fans. Why is that?

Anyhow to answer the TCs question as best I can (as IF I have all answers).

PC games do get hyped, but frankly most hype comes within the industry, it is rarely fans that starts hype trains, it is the Publishers, because mostly on console you need alot of initial sales since the average consumer on console are not likely to buy a game Down the line when it is not popular, so most sales have to fall within the first few months. If they fail that target, the games will not be profittable (there are execptions).

On the PC you still see the hype from third party Publishers, and ther eare some PC centric devs and pubs that hype games, Near all blizzard games, for example. The culture is different though, often referred to "slow burning sales" Which might be that people on PC have long been focusing on Word of mouth, heck they have done so since the beginning of the platform. resulting in less hype and likely also a big part in the "lets play" culture basicly we are talking about two drasticly differnt cultures.

But to be honest the last game that was hyped have likely been Divinity Original sin, which were having many people excited, without the big hype engines of gaming sites, gaming mags, and multi mullion doller hype campaigns, you might have missed it.

Yet to see Blizzard game flop. I'm waiting for their flop lol...... Before you guys start abusing me for Diablo 3; it was still a commercial success and I'm a PC gamer.

Also the fact that since PC is open source there are tons of games released under the radar. It's often marketing through word of mouth.

well i can't speak for anyone else, but for me personally - i'd never bank on any upcoming game being 'good'. so i'm not hyping any games be they pc exclusives or console exclusives.

now at the same time there are people on this website who tell me flat out that an upcoming game will be good - they're setting themselves up to either be right, or to be wrong. and yeah just spitballing here but crudely i hear more predictions of goodness from the consolite side.

i mean, consider for example star citizen and it's graphics. i would agree that pc gamers are hyping the graphics of this game. but compared that to something like uncharted 4. Star Citizen - PC gamers can play the game now and actually assess the graphics (in the current pre-alpha state), they can run it live on their actual hardware and assess based on merit. Uncharted 4 - nobody can play it sans the development team in house, all we've seen is footage of an in-engine animation - and yet it's hyped (by some) to have superior graphics. How can they say that? They're saying it out of hype, based on information they've been fed deliberately by the devs/pubs/sony whatever. They cannot be certain of the actual graphical prowess when running on PS4 - and in the past we've been deceived.

There's hype. But, with the amount of games on the PC, many users don't need to get overly excited for a new game....

PC gaming doesn't depend on exclusives to justify itself so we don't need to hype them.

If an awesome one like Divinity OS appears,w e talk about it and praise it. But exclusives are the cherry on top of all the indies, mid size and AAA we get.

And Star Citizen gets hyped all the time.

PC games are very hyped up, only online though. It's a really good business tactic. Advertise the game on what it is meant to be played on. Console games on TV and PC games on the internet.

Destiny is a commercial success but its still a flop.

because only exclusive games are hyped on sw and quite frankly all pc exclusives suck so master pleb race has nothing to shout about.

Well if they're THAT popular, and there are so many hermits on SW, you guys should play the SW game and hype them since you're here already. Stand behind them like console gamers stand behind their games, even if they flop and are laughed at.

Except console gamers don't do that. When TLOU flopped the Playstation fanboys started shouting about how MC was all that mattered, that's not the SW game.

Because MS and Sony get their trucks of money and throw it into advertising. You get none of that on PC.

Flops or not, Hyped or not...the end result is the same:

PC has more 8's and 9's, every year, for 3 gens now. That is whats important.

Most PC devs like to spend their money on making the game, rather than on paid articles.

In most cases, console hype is generated by lots of marketing money; Activision and EA are masters at this. There is also first party support, which is another venue for hype generation. There is no first party on PC, so that doesn't exist either.

Oddly enough many console gamers don't have the balls to even hype their exclusives to be AAA

Because most PC gamers find their "one game to rule them all" and play it for 10 years. "Hype" isn't something they understand.

Last PC game I was crazy hyped for was Guild Wars 2, and that ended up being a crushing disappointment

Because there are lot of games on PC , and it is impossible to hype all of them . On other hand consoles get their next big exclusive after several months and since consoles are sold because of those exclusives , lot of hype surrounds those games . At the end of the day , you play good games on your preferred platform , not hype and game sales .

i picked up Crusader Kings 2 when it released 2 years ago at launch and to this day i have almost 200 clocked hours in the game. I only wish i can get even a fraction of that kind of enjoyment out of this generation of console games.

PC gamers do hype games that look like big winners,but why bother making a thread about it on a board controlled by cows? When threads of divinity:OS was posted on here prior to its 9.0 review score console fanboys just talked about how low budget it looks and how it doesn't look "next gen" and that the games they're interested in are somehow superior because of developers and their many GOTY awards for previous games.

The answer is simple, really. NVidia and AMD don't see it fit to blow their wad on advertising PC games. Meanwhile, Microsoft has a vested interest in XBox and put their marketing dollars there (in a big way, I might add).

When AAA games come to console, the big 3 are willing to splash some cash on co-marketing deals with the publishers. On PC, there's no real push from the platform itself. So at the end of the day blame Intel, AMD, NVidia and Microsoft for that.

Well on that note, I guess not many PC gamers have the balls to hype their games at all.

As fanboy as that statement is.. it's a valid point. After COD it was all down hill for PC exclusives.
