Who was smarter about controller batteries?

With Sony you have a $60controller with a rechargeable battery inside. The downside however, once that battery doesn't hold a charge after about a year you have to buy another $60 controller even though your controller that doesn't hold a charge still works perfectly fine, just needs to be plugged in all the time now. Cost after a year roughly $120

Or Microsoft who also offers a $60 controller that will take AA batteries or by a $25 play and charge kit. Once the rechargeable battery no longer holds a charge, you can buy a new rechargeable battery for $15. After one year total cost is roughly $100 or more if you just buy AA batteries.

I've had a ps3 for 5 years now. Original controller still going strong. Try harder.

the lithium ion cell in a dual shock 3 or 4 should last for over a year, assuming the user followed good practices.

Your one of the lucky ones because I have had to buy 4 DS3 controllers and my DS4 only last around 5-6 hours.

if only MS included the rechargeable battery pack with the base model. If they did that then I'd go with the MS solution. But they didn't so I'd just take my chances with the li-ion controller (assume they use li-ion batteries).

That doesn't mean everyones controllers will work that long. It really depends on how much you use your controller. All rechargeable batteries will die at some point. Don't act like your battery is the exception to the rule.

You get an option with the XOne controller, you don't get with the DS4. Options>>>>>>>>>>>no options

That is wellbeyond the average lifespan of a Li-ion battery. They are designed to last between 2-3 years under average use. At about the third year, they begin to drastically lose the ability to retain a strong charge. It's one of the reasons why cellphone replacement occurs within this time range.

PS3 batteries are pretty good and if you buy a whole new controller because it's lost it's charge then you are a fool when all you have to do is buy a new battery from ebay for under $10.

I still have 2 controllers from 2006 with the charge lasting over 20 hours. But is not even hard to change the battery to begin with. What becomes a problem after a while with DS3's are the sticks because they suck up sweat and shit and then you either need to open it up to replace the entire stick, which you can buy for cheap at amazon (only 1 cent!), or buy the little caps but they are not as tight as the originals, so I prefer to buy the sticks.

That's great. How long does it take to disassemble a DS3? An iPhone? A lot longer than the 5 second swap of a couple of batteries or a battery pack.

Sony was really dumb not to just make it an external battery pack.

My sixaxis controller from launch worked for years it broke from wear and tear before the battery stopped charging.

removing 5 (to be exact) screws to replace the battery on a Dualshock only takes like 2 minutes at most and it'll last you for years! You can't be this ignorant.... lol

Bullshit. If you wanna lie, please don't make it so obvious. Most people have Dualshocks which lasted the full 7 years. Those who didn't had theirs fail for reasons other than the batteries. Only a very very small minority probably had their batteries fail. You however, are claiming to hit a jackpot 4 times in a row.

I'm talking about swapping batteries. With the DS3, you have to wait for the controller to charge before using it again (unless you are one of those people with a 15' USB-miniUSB cable). You can't just "swap" out the DS3 pack every time you want to keep playing and the batteries are dead.

It's a personal preference, and having the option of using batteries, rechargeable batteries or a rechargeable battery pack is better than only a pack. The only ignorant people here are those trying to justify less options being better.

I have rechargeables for my X1, but I feel MS should have included a battery, and a charge cable. You would still get the so called options, some here seem to care about.

Not sure how long my DS3 was dead but yup its dead. Can I open it up and buy a battery on ebay or something? Anyway, I just don't get the hate for MS having the options to use AA batteries, rechargeable batteries, and Play & Charge kit. Plus they have 3rd party chargers too.

I still have SIXAXIS controllers from 2007 and DS3 controllers from 2009 that work. The analog sticks and triggers may not function like they should but I've never had a controller that needed a replacement battery. Last time a ever had something that took batteries is my CD player...

No need for insults. Personally, I use AA batteries with my 360 since I don't use it very often, and find the battery packs and rechargeables don't hold a charge long enough in between the times that I use it.

I just wish the DS3 battery lasted longer. My PS3 is mostly just a Netflix box now, and we have to switch controllers every couple weeks despite the controller being on for 10 minutes every couple hours.

Honestly, AA batteries give the best flexibility, offering both replaceable and rechargeable.

@foxhound_fox: if you are one of the rare people who prefer AA battery than okay. But most people prefer play n charge model and ms is money greedy for not having it built into the controller..if they really cared about options they would include the lion pack and make the lion pack removable, not charge an extra $25 for it

My GBA SP, DSs, smartphones, 3DS, Vita, PS3 (never replaced my launch PS3 controllers :0), Wii U, Tablets, and PS4 all have internal batteries.

I think people care considerably too much about what kind of batteries are in the controller considering that as soon as they start dying, you just plug the controller in...

And no, spending 60 seconds to change the batteries isn't going to kill you.

SONY WINS!! No seriously, Sony wins. That battery will be just fine for 3 years or so.

And if your battery ever starts acting funny, it takes like 5 minutes to unscrew the controller, pop the clips, and replace the battery.

Is 5 minutes too much? Nope.

My 60 GB PS3 fat remote still works and holds around 8 hours charge over 6 years later.

I consider Sony's battery decision better. The way I see it I would of bought a play and charge kit anyway for an Xbox One controller. Sony is just saving me $25.

Never had a problem with my ps3 controllers and they are 5 years old. Love how lems buy into the non replicable drivel that MS feeds them.

My PS3 controllers from launch '06 still work fine and I still use them. I've had three PS3s since then and all the controllers I got with them still work.

You're talking shit. Ive had 2 DS3 controllers since launch and ive never once had any problems with either of them and they still hold charge as if they were new still so stop making up shit to make yourself feel better.

Internal battery is a pain in the a$$, pay $60 to have a partly wired solution with a shitty battery life... you have to be an idiot to defend this. A good charger and eneloops, nothing beats it.

Sony. Had my PS3 for 5-7 years. Played it all the time. Never once had to replace any controller.

360 batteries suck. The remotes suck because they only work for about an hour before they stop working. Blu-Ray remote is far better, since I only had to replace the batteries like once a year.

God, I miss my PS3...
