It's (not) very clear to see that Nintendo are facing the same fate* as Sega.

They are caught between gens. Their* new hardware is more powerful than the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3. And weaker than next gen consoles.

They have dev support and ideas. For example 2DS and pokemon X and Y.

The OP must be extremely young. I mean how on earth did Nintendo ever manage, having low console sales and little 3rd party support in the past? N64 and GameCube were both very low selling consoles with libraries that consisted mostly of first party games. Just because bro gamers won't be buying a Nintendo to play Battlefield and Call of Doody, doesn't mean Nintendo is dying. Even right now. Nintendo is worth 14 billion dollars strictly as a gaming company.

The Wii U is slightly more powerful than the Wii? I don't think you realize just how weak the Wii was.

It's a lot more likely that Sony will drop Playstation than Nintendo to drop even its home console division:

• Sony is a diverse company. For the past few years Playstation contributed very little, generally between 1-10% of Sony's profit, while the vast majority of Sony's profit was contributed by life insurance of all things. Nintendo on the other hand is completely devoted to handheld gaming and home console gaming hardware and software. It doesn't have much of an option to "drop". It's their whole business.
• In terms of financials, Sony is in a terrible state. It has made losses for the past 10 years, and only started to make a very meager profit (1.4% profitability, which is lower than most banks' interest or the rate of inflation) in 2013. Playstation contributes only 2% to that 1.4% profitability in 2013. It's really quite astronomical just how unprofitable Sony's playstation segment and Sony as a whole is at the moment. Nintendo on other hand has a profitability of 7.8% in 2013, which doubles Microsoft Xbox division's profitability of 3.6% in 2013.

2013 Actual profit ranking (all in USD): Microsoft Xbox 888m > Nintendo 506m > Sony Playstation & PC MMOs 17m

2013 Profitability ranking (net profit/sales): Nintendo 7.8% > Microsoft Xbox 3.6% > Sony Playstation & PC MMOs 0.2%

• Microsoft is doing well purely because of Windows, its servers and business software (i.e. Office), which contribute to 124% of net profit (this is because the returns of all other segments combined generate a loss)
• Sony is not dead purely because of its life insurance service, which contributes to 151% of net profit (again, this is due to the other segments generating a loss in total)
• Nintendo is making a profit because of its gaming hardware and software. It relies on nothing else.

out of the companies who could die right now I think I'd be saddest if it happened to nintendo, they helped build this industry, they've been a major source of innovation, I think it's sad the turn of events that has happened, but the fact that this idea of ninty going has been so commonly discussed really shows that it might happen, I really hope it doesn't though
