With PS4s now selling for $349,99, how is a three-year-old system like the Wii U still anywhere close to $300? Xbox One had a significant price drop, and it helped with sales. The same could be said for Wii U.

If PS4, which is leading console sales by double over the competition, is getting a price cut, how has Nintendo NOT dropped the price of the Wii U with its small sales numbers per month? i think a $199.99 pricetag would really help move it this Christmas, maybe even as low as $179.99.

Nintendo is making lots of money on every unit sold and they would only drop the price if they weren't happy with the number of units moving.

Im not sure, i think Nintendo is having problems convincing stores to drops its price. Thats why Nintendo is selling them for $200 at Nintendo Store i think. I was expecting a price cut for the holidays, maybe we get something Black Friday, but not sure on price cut now.

You can get a $200 refurbished from Nintendo if price is holding you back, and you rest assured they're quality. If your speaking of their pricing strayegy, Nintendo isn't interested in reversing fortunes of Wii U anymore. That would take money, developer resources, and they need both to prep for NX launch. Besides, they can't keep making chips they need for it. They're only supporting Wii U enough to save face when they try to say they didn't abandon it.

Wasn't aware you could get them for $200 at the Nintendo Store. thats awesome!

Yeah, that's refurbished though. Im talking brand new, walk in the store and see it fresh in the wrapper next to PS4s and Xbox Ones, all with price cuts.

Wait a minute, are the $200 refurbished ones the same ones that Mesome is talking about on the Nintendo Store?

@jcrame10: They kinda are brand new, Nintendo opens the box, turns it on, then sales it used. Its only way they can get pass their contract with Stores.

Obviously Wii U's not selling well for them but yeah they also aren't jumping at the chance to lose money on every unit. I mean, Wii U's still cheaper than the other 2 consoles though I expected another price cut this holiday.

@Chozofication: If it weren't selling well enough for them, they would drop the price. They dropped the price of the Wii when sales started to wane.

They're obviously playing damage control and just trying to squeeze as much revenue out of it as possible.

@jcrame10: yes, $200 from Nintendo's online store, like I said though if you want a new cheaper bundle or in store price drop don't expect it, that'd cost money they're not in a position to lose because people who say Nintendo should do it won't buy it anyways, both MS and Sony are both into competing while Nintendo isn't so don't expect sales

My guess:

Basically, it's selling like crap and expensive to make (due to the gamepad). They don't really have many options other than just to ride it out at the same price until NX.

@jcrame10: Yes, the refurb price is what people are confusing you with.

The refurb price has been $200 for a long time, but it's still refurb.

You are correct to ask about the new price drop.

When the new price drop does hit, the old refurb price will eventually go down as well.

There are REFURB PS3s, Wiis, 360s, PS4s, and Xbones as well. People slam that old refurb Wii U price around now for at least a year, but seem oblivious that you are talking a new price or that the refurb should be cheaper by now. Plus, refurb purchases can be iffy. Go to the Nintendo forums for instance and read about people's refurb experiences.

Nintendo's epic failure with Wii-U will not be complete until it's U.S. monthly unit sales are only 3 digits. It seems by not dropping the price, that's what they are aiming for.

^ This...there's really nothing they can do about the price. IF they reduce price they'd be selling at a loss anyway...at least now its selling like crap but they're still making profit on whatever amount sold. :P

It is weird that the 3DS sees more Price Drops in it's life than WiiU.

I guess we'll see one when NX releases.

@Gue1: Selling slower than the Saturn? That's saying something, considering IMO Saturn was in a similar situation as the Wii U, but it actually had decent 3rd party support. Will the NX be the Dreamcast for Nintendo (their last console)?

Here's a little tip...when a console includes a game, that's pretty much a price cut in disguise. Imagine $50 off the price and voila there's your price cut.

The $200 refurbished w/ the 1 year warranty straight from Nintendo has been tempting me for a while. Been wanting to play some older Wii titles and it seems like a better value than just getting a refurbished Wii from somewhere.

Tin foil hat time: they're keeping it at $350 because when the NX launches around the same price or higher, it'll look like a deal.

This leads me to believe the NX will not be priced aggressively. At least not as aggressive as $349.

I don't really regret not getting a Dreamcast. A good bit of it's library has been ported elsewhere - obviously minus some key ones.

The best thing the Wii-U has going for it is it's backwards compatibility - especially if the NX is not backwards compatible. If that's the case I might then just get one as a "backup Wii" LOL. Then again considering how little I've played my WIi since about 2009-2010, it's probably not even worth having a backup.

I think the price as of now for $300 is okay since Wii U has lots of exclusive games now and at launch, it was worst for the console with no games to play for the original price back then. I personally don't expect Nintendo to drop a price until they announce there new console and probably lower Wii U price whenever NX launches. Yes the refurbished is $200 but I advice anyone buying any console refurbished and buying it new is a safest route to do and I personally don't trust refurbished items but hey, you'll get what you pay for.

I don't think we've received a price drop here in Aus since launch... I'm pretty sure it's still the same RRP.

Hence why I haven't bought one.

Think of it as losing one dollar today or two dollars tomorrow by dragging your feet. With the recent cut of the PS4 and a sure to be bundle or drop for the X1 this season coupled with solid software, the price of the Wii U is hurting it and will only continue hurting. The value of the competition is too much for a $300 Wii U. Yes, the Nintendo Store has offered a $200 refurbished console for a while now but it isn't "new" and isn't something I feel most people know about. Seeing a product in front of you in a B&M store makes that impulse purchase so much easier than something on a website that you can not touch and feel.

The stock of the Nintendo console seems to be gathering dust and staying at an unreasonable price will only cause the dust to gather inches deep.

@davillain-: If you're going to buy refurbished, a first party source is as reliable as it gets. There is a difference between a refurbished item at the Nintendo Store and a refurbished item at the flea market.

The fact of the matter is, a $200 Wii U is available. Whether you think it's worth it or not is your decision. Just do not move the goalpost.

Sorry, but used/refurb pricing IS moving the goalpost - even if you think Nintendo "refurb" is better than someone else's refurb. When looking at console pricing, NOBODY looks at refurbs as the baseline. There have been PS4's and Xbox One's on cowboom for like $250. So I guess the PS4 and Xbox One are really $250 now as well because that's what some refurb's go for? Nope. I was happy to buy my $399 batman bundle because it was NEW.

The discount to get me to buy a refurb console would have to be much more than that...especially when I think even NEW it should be $200 tops - refurbs should be like $150.

First of all Nintendo should had the wii u at 150 dollars instead of 300 dollars and they really need to update Mario with graphics like Resident evil remake

@kyacat: Thats about how much the Wii cost right now. You should check out Mario in Super Smash Bros, he has updated to HD very nicely. Resident Evil Remake is old, that beast was done on Gamecube. Mario Galaxy exceeds that.

Just saw this thread... did i miss the "refurbished" argument yet? *Looks up* Nope! The WiiU has been a disaster from day 1. Nintendo knows this system isn't going to move any significant units, so they're trying to get as much money out of it as they can before the NX.

There doesn't seem to be a price drop for the Wii U in sight, Best buy still has the Wii U 32GB with Mario Maker for $317.99 while the old Wii U 32GB with Super Mario 3D world and Nintendo land for $299.99

While Mario maker is a recent title the Wii U is still the 32GB model even with DLC included Marion maker seems to have pushed this SKU to $317.99

People are best served by buying a $199.99 Wii U from Nintendo on-line store. and then getting Mario Maker or Super Mario 3D world for $59.99

That reason being the poor mismanagement from Sega with their hardware up until the DC's release which made many distrustful of anything Sega put out, and their precarious financial situation up until that point. Not to mention it was going up against the beast known as the PS2. Those were some of the reasons, it had nothing to do with its software lineup which was stellar right out of the gate. The DC was an amazing system burdened by its company's ineptness and past history.

I don't disagree that the software appears awesome out of the gate (at least compared to the lacking lineups of today), but it didn't really matter after the PS2 launched. The PS2 destroyed all in terms of it's lineup. I'm sure DVD played a huge role with the PS2 as well. Just like how lack of CD killed the N64 for Nintendo, the lack of DVD likely played a huge role in the early demise of the Dreamcast (on top of all the other issues going on with Sega).

I don't think the Wii-U will have a price cut until it's successor, the NX is within 6 months of release.
