Forgive me if this has been done before but with the way technology has been "improving" faster and how the next installment of devices is churned out overnight. hen do you think we will be saying the ps5, xbox2, nintendo??

@KungfuKitten: @osan0: 2018? Are you 2 nuts? 5 years after launch? No way. Sony even said they'd like the ps4 to last longer than the ps3.
These consoles were made to be profitable, unlike previous gens which relied on recovering via software sales. MS and Sony lost millions on the OGxbox and ps3 aswell.
The PS4 and XB1 will probably go for another 6 to 9 years before we officially behind next gen.
Not before 2022 (Ps and Xbox). Sony said they want Ps4 to last longer than Ps3 and MS once said that cloud will help Xbox to last for ten years, which means they're also targeting for longer lifespan.
@deadline-zero0:
5 years is the usual life of a gen. last gen was freaky in its duration (towards the end it was just exhausted completely). it was also managed really badly which contributed to the problem (insane R&D costs, massive losses at launch and so on. crazy business model).
this gen is far more sensible. practical hardware, sane R&D costs and breaking even on the hardware at least. MS, sony and nintendo should be ready to release in 5 years (well 3 for nintendo and 4 for MS and sony now).
the only thing that may drag this gen out is the cost of development. itll be interesting to see how that is managed this gen. if the cost of development is just too high for more powerful hardware then this gen may be extended.
8-10 years is too long. by then the consoles have been maxxed out for years, devs are out of ideas and the industry gets stuck in a rut (As we saw last gen). the wow factor is long gone and game sales drop.
sony and MS say a lot of things (at one stage the 360 was only supposed to last 3-4 years before getting replaced. MS wanted a more rapid release of hardware). in the end they will do what they deem whats best for them and their partners.

Companies are run by accountants not by engineers, the engineers will be able to make use of the latest technology when the accountants say it´s has become cheap for massive implementation to make a profitable device. Not before 2020.

Look the consoles were already old when they released. They're not going to last that long. Just like Destiny won't last 10 years.
@KungfuKitten: @osan0: Last gen consoles were outdated by 2010. yet they went for 3-4 more years.
MS and Sony will only keep production costs downs going into teh future. WHat logical reason would they have to release a new console 4 years from now when they'll still be selling many for even higher margins by then.
Jesus, if these consoles honestly last as long or longer than the PS3/360 there are going to be some disgruntled consumers and developers. Developers had been asking for new hardware for a long time before the PS4 and Xbox One were released and we were given consoles that are comparable to mid-range PC's (at the time of their release). People are already complaining about how weak they are and we're only one year in. Very few games are doing 1080p and 60fps, which was promised to us for all games.
PC's will be mopping the floor (if they aren't already) with these console in a couple of years and it wouldn't be unreasonable to believe that our phones will be capable of producing similar graphics within three years or so. The PS4 and Xbox One will be so outdated by 2020 it won't even be funny. But take a game like Star Citizen - the developers have stated that it simply cannot be done on the current-gen consoles and we're a year in...That's pathetic, especially if we won't see new consoles for another five or six years at the least.
I never thought I'd be one to believe that consoles could die out, but if our PHONES will be able to do what these consoles can in 2020 and PC's will have surpassed them years before, it's not too crazy to think this. Plus, most of the profitable games (Call of Duty, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, Sports games, etc.) are all multiplatform and therefore the developers could produce the same experience on a tablet or phone.
Probably 2017 for the next Nintendo system. 2018 for the others. I can't see this gen lasting nearly as long as the previous. All the consoles are using outdated hardware, some moreso than others and this already shows.
Next Nintendo system should make it in the 2016 to 2017 area. PS5/X2 will come around 2020. By the time tne Nintendo System after that comes out both Sony and MS will become Streaming services on that Nintendo system.
Next Nintendo console will be out by 2016, PS and MS's next ones will be out around 2018.
Their hardware will prevent developers from reaching their goals, heck their already compromising aspects to get games to reach a specific resolutions or framerates. Give it another year and we will see a plateau.
Maybe the next "consoles" will simply be PCs each with a specific OS... They can't go on with the affordable-hardware-that-lasts-a-good-7-years act for long...
At the same time, however... look at those sales! People have been wanting a console more than ever just when there's least incentives to get them so I dunno.
It's going to be Nintendo first then Samsung will enter the fray followed by xbox which will be more like a pc than anything ,Sony will be finished by then. No way they can sustain losing billions each fiscal quarter ,if they don't turn a profit during this fiscal quarter it's doubtful they ever will again.
x360 and ps3 are still around.you fools are still playing last gen ports like dragon age and loving it

The next gen starts when it starts, it doesn't start when this one ends. If you are an accountant at Nintendo why do you stick with the Wii U making minimal sales when you can jump start with something new?
Also with tech advancing this fast it also means prices drop and it becomes affordable fast, so you're point isn't very sound to begin with

It won't be longer. Especially not if they are permanently going to "off the shelf" parts. That should make the cycle to R&D new console iterations much shorter.
But 2018 is definitely early. I was thinking 2020. 2019 wouldn't be shocking at all if that's what the market dictates, and if tablets are out there that blow away consoles (i.e. tablets with 4K displays and graphics by 2019 could be pretty normal).

Good point. It's a year or more into the new gen and they're still making games for gen 7, and people are till buying them. Think about that for a minute.
2018-2020.
WiiWiiU2 being in 2018, and probably 2019/2020 for XboxTwo and PS5.
In another thread recently, I actually tabulated to the month the previous machines which could give some indication.
It's not a science, but we do know Playstation and Xbox are targeting longer gens this time and we have the past to look at which shows longer generations as well:
The anomaly is the PS4 with an extra year looking at this timeline, six years between machines or seven if they are going with the longer PS3 to PS4 pattern and Sony said that they were striving for a longer gen than before, but playing it save, we give the PS5 the same 7 year gap between machines we saw with the recent PS3-PS4 long transition.
Recent Nintendo:
You can see here, Nintendo has the shortest life/release new console schedule save for the original Xbox 1. Going with a longer gen, we get the WiiWii2 in 6 years in 2018, shortening it up to Nintendo's 5 year minimum, we see a successor in 2017 at the earliest.
Xbox:
I think Ninty's next could come in 2016. Definitely 2017, anyway.
PS4 and xb1 can potentially last 6 years or more, but unlike the ps3 and 360 which cost those companies a lot of money, Sony and MS have the headroom to not go so long this time. If Ninty's next console is substantially more powerful that would put a bit of pressure on.
Phones will be more powerful than the PS4 and Xbox One before you see the next consoles.
Phones now are not even half as powerful as the 360.
Next Gen and Console is an oxymoron.
Not when comparing CONSOLES to CONSOLES. The ps4/x1 is in fact next gen in comparison to the ps3/360. Don't be a moron.
It's a joke, genius. Who is the moron now?
By looking at your post history, and continued console bashing, it isn't me.

Well, Nintendo is already working on a new console. I don't think it will be out until 2017 though at the earliest.
New XBox Two or PS5 won't happen until around 2020 I would say. They may be completely digital by then. Expect these systems to have 2TB or more of storage.

But if I was a PlayStation fanboy and was bashing the Xbox, would I be less of a "moron" in your eyes? GTFO.
My Predictions:
2016 for the Wii-U successor. They will finally get trophies, and a good matchmaking service (probably a little too late)
2018 for the next Xbox, which will probably be just a Digital Download Streaming Device (sadly the most likely future of gaming). It may not happen at all if MS decides to shift most of their gaming focus back to the PC.
I really don't expect a PS5. Sony will either not survive that long, or they will just start streaming all of their previous games to the PS Now service. Coming to a TV or other device near you. If the PS5 does happen I would imagine they will mainly just remaster stuff from the PS2, PS3, and PS4. They aren't going to spend a lot of money they don't have on gaming for the 9th Generation.
Interesting how early people are already speculating next gen. Though I cant say im in a hurry to see future consoles that are forced online, forced download-only, no used games boxes. Microsoft attempted to pull that shit already, which means if they felt they could get away with it, they would have. Who is to say they wont try it again.
