Why do publisher like to announce ship numbers, except for their most established franchise?

What's wrong with sale numbers that publishers tend to be reluctant in announcing them?

Why is it that Rockstar and Blizzard prefer announcing sale numbers that ship numbers? Why can't Bioware and others do the same?

That is all. Thank you.

Why do publisher like to announce ship numbers, except for their most established franchise?- they usually look better than sales numbers, especially to oblvious/unaware audienecs

What's wrong with sale numbers that publishers tend to be reluctant in announcing them?- They do both, but usually say sales numbers when they have a firmer grasp on the number. Shipped numbers are easier for the first few weeks to announce.

Why is it that Rockstar and Blizzard prefer announcing sale numbers that ship numbers? Just their way of workingWhy can't Bioware and others do the same?Same as RS and Blizzard, it's preference

That is all. Thank you. You're welcome

The way I see it, ship numbers are easier to track, as they're the numbers that say how many copies publishers sold to retailers.

Sale numbers are harder to track, it's not easy to compile the data of exact numbers of copies sold to consumers by all those retailers...

They can track shipped number easier. It easy to keep track that a company shipped out 3 million copies of a game. It is not easy to have every single distributor report back to the company and tell them how many units they sold.

Digital downloads would be very easy to track since you can not only count how many were sold, but also how much each person paid for it. Unforunately, major digital distributors like Steam do not report their sales numbers. Not sure if EA does with Origins
