Poll What year did you realize PC gaming was superior to consoles? (123 votes)

1980's (Chuck Yeager, Oregon Trail, Lemonade Stand, Word Muncher, Carmen Sandiego) 11%
1990's (Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft, Sim City, Doom, Quake, Half-life, CS, TF, Everquest) 45%
2000's (Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, Dota, WoW, Half-life 2, CS-GO, TF2) 27%
2010's (Hearthstone, LoL, Dota 2,Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, best version of all console games) 15%

What year was that made you go, "PC is the best place to be"?

Was it early or is now with all the games going on it or when was it for you around?

Did you go back to consoles and was it a nightmare transition? I remember having to go back to my console like ps1 and ps2 and I was just like a huge hassle and I hated it...it just doesn't felt right. With this generation of consoles I feel like its even worse like now they feel like mini PC's that are just inferior in every way, before I was getting different experiences when I turned on my SNES or n64 I got diff experience from PC it was a dream to get away from my PC.

With the XB1 and the PS4 I am not dreaming when I'm playing on those just constantly thinking why use these things anymore, this the first generation this is happened where I just don't want to use them over PC, they didn't push graphics hard enough like the 360 did, the PS3 also pushed hardware, my gaming PC at those times couldn't compete with either of those 2 consoles, and its just not the case with these budget consoles they have made at a hefty 400 dollar price tag.

That depends if Spectrum's classed as a PC or not, if so then 1981. Other than that I choose 1990's because I built my first IBM Compatible in 1990. A super fast 486DX 33 :)

I had a similar spec machine around then, mine ran at 66mhz though.

It was a recent transition for me.

I think I'll be comfortable with Nintendo and PC this gen. Pick up a PS4 or Xbox One when it's cheap and filled with Exclusives.

I always considered PC gaming the lackluster alternative to consoles, so never I guess? I mean there are barely any games worth playing and the ones that are have already been available on consoles for years.

Summer of '54.

Ha, I remember like it was yesterday. Hottest Summer we had. Eh... Those days are over now though. That's just how it is. But they're nice memories, and that's all I need in my old age.

I had a PC for gaming since the early 2000s. I never really got into it until the end of the decade though. Skyrim opened my eyes.

It never was for me. I remember playing pc games a long time ago. Age of empire 2, mortal kombat 4, the Sims and star craft were the shit for me, but they never could hold a candle to consoles for me.

PC fanboys are just as bad as console fanboys sometimes. Neither PC gaming or Console gaming is superior to one another. It's all about preference and what's best for you.

2007, the year I gave up on the Xbox 360. Got tired of my hardware dying, so I jumped over to PC. I still get Nintendo consoles, though. Gotta have my Nintendo exclusives.

I never thought it was "superior" in any great sense, through the 90s in just had games that weren't on consoles, just like the consoles had games that just weren't on PC. Probably about the year 2000 that I first got reliable high speed internet and was exposed to Counter-Strike did PC online multiplayer gaming really set PC gaming apart from consoles to me. Though, that's since been changed as consoles now have strong online since XBL and PSN, plus many PC games are now being made as consoles-PC multiplatform titles. PC still has it's own thing, and the greatest potential regarding multiplatform port performance, but it doesn't feel as worlds ahead as some make it out to be. I'm quite content with the performance and economics of console gaming.

As cliche as it sounds...i think it was with Crysis, honestly i never paid much attention to which platform was "superior", if i liked the games i bought the platform, so i equally enjoyed Warcraft, Zelda, Starcraft, Metal Gear Solid, etc...but with Crysis and the ongoing Internet boom, i was like...yep, that's pretty amazing, from there i know that every single multiplatform will look and perform better on PC...too bad there are very few games nowadays that show that superiority.

Throughout the 90's I never really thought either was superior, since most of the games were different enough that the platforms weren't really competing. Early 2009 though was when I bought a $170 1 gig HD 4870; this wonderful card not only showed me PC gaming didn't have to be an expensive hobby, it was so far ahead of what the consoles could offer in terms of fidelity and performance. Coupled with the versatility of PC's in general, modding, and the rise of native controller support, I see no reason to bother with consoles, barring a few desirable unemulated exclusives.

I backed away from PC gaming a 2-3 of years ago. I still have an i5 and 460GTX, but I'm now full time console. I was introduced to PC gaming in the 90s with Quake and later got my own computer to play games like half life.

I had a couple of reasons for backing away one was for some reason I was prone to motion sickness with quite a few PC games, I have no issues with console games. The second main reason was the constant messing around trying to get the best performance bored me. I also have less time now to mess around so consoles give me an easy and fast way to jump in a game.

There are smaller issues that I could have overcome like preferring to sit back and play on a TV, but really I didn't want to keep moving my PC around, plus keyboard and mouse doesn't work great on a sofa.

2004

IIRC, 2004-2008 was the time when game developers put the best versions of their games on PC.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 had the XL mode, bump mapping, water shaders, bloom
Call of Duty 4 had out-of-the-box mod support and 32 player matches
IIRC, Fable had shaders not present in the Xbox version

And then came 2009, where it felt like a bad year to be a PC gamer (much to the point where i thought that we needed FFXIII, but then it turned out to be little more than a glorified petition)

1998. But actually the nature of consoles had already disappointed me before that. I was still playing my SNES by then and it was about to die anyways. Rainbow Six, FIFA 98 : RTWC, and NFS III:Hot Pursuit were the first games I got. A few months later I got Rogue Squadron, Half Life and Tomb Raider Trilogy.

around the time FF8 came out.

i had a PS1 and played it a lot. then my dad decided to get a PC but initally we didnt have any games for it. just encarta (remember encarta? :P)

then my dad brought home a gamepack from work (it was a bundle his employer sold) which included freespace.

i saw this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ-xcgBL1mY

never played the PS1 again.

you have to understand that at the time we were playing the PS1 on a small telly with just the tellys speaker. the PC came with stereo speakers and a big monitor. mind was blown. high resolution with smooth textures and being abel to command fellow fighters and all that....oh...my...god. a FPS with a mouse...what power! before that i was playing alien trilogy on the PS1 with the PS1s Dpad.

it also helped that freepace was, and is, an absolute cracking game.

i was interested in PC gaming before that and would play on a friends. but i didnt get access to my own PC until relatively late (they were very very expensive back then).

in saying that i do play plenty of console games today of course. but i didnt play on a console again after that until windwaker on the GC.

@Ballroompirate: Yeah I guess having a superior range of hardware, cheaper game prices, more accessible game distribution, custom content, native backwards compatibility, and the largest variety of games of any platform is still somehow not better.

I've always been a PC gamer knowing that the PC had the best variety of games and most fulfilling game experiences. I never played a game on the consoles that came close to stuff I was playing on the PC. Sadly I couldn't get a proper PC until 2007. Before that I had to deal with hand-me-downs and a laptop.

I never had a NES because at the time I was completely into the Amiga. It's the only major console that I never owned.

So to answer the question, way back when.

Late 90s here ....

PC won me entirely when i first tried multiplayer gaming ! Since then im a hermit and that wont easily change. I love big communities , competitive games , making friends , talk daily in Ventrilo/TS/Skype etc ... Doing this since early 00s , ive made some great friendships in various games which im still in contact !! Console heading there but itll take a few more generations ( 1 - 2 or more ) to really catch up with PC in online gaming. Till then .... PC all the way

Ah a subjective thread dressed up as objective. I don't actually find it superior and play most of my games on console. Different strokes man....deal with it.
