Poll What was the best Sega console? (69 votes)

Master System 1%
Mega Drive/Genesis 67%
Saturn 3%
Dreamcast 29%

In their time, Sega made four consoles. They were often far ahead of their time with the kinds of things they pushed with their hardware, but their consoles (and their games on them) were incredible, which is what made their final demise so sad.

Sega might never be coming back to the hardware market, but that does not mean that their hardware cannot be celebrated.

There were four Sega consoles: which one, do you think, was the greatest of them all?

I've only ever owned a Genesis, and a Dreamcast.

The Dreamcast was amazing, but the Genesis was pretty much equal to the SNES, but with a different flavor of games (the good ole days when competing consoles didn't just have 95% the same library).

I feel that if the Dreamcast could have lived out a full life of 5-6 years it'd easily have been the best console Sega made, but since it didn't, I'd take a Genesis any day.

With that said.................I actually only own a Dreamcast right now O___________O

Have to say the Dreamcast.. I bought a Genesis and Sonic and was in gaming nirvana but beyond that.. there was slim pickings IMHO. I enjoyed the SNES far more so it was hard to keep focused on the Genesis. The Dreamcast was a beast of a machine that was far ahead of it's time (VMU, Online Gaming, Web-browsing, ect..).

No idea. I never really owned one. Not to mention I would've been to young to really judge games and consoles like I do now.

Despite the Genesis having the best software library, I am sure that a bunch of nerds are going to claim that the Dreamcast was the best because it is hip to like the Dreamcast these days.

It boils down to what you prefer, your exposure to the library on each system and with what system you grew up with. The Dreamcast is no slouch in the software department, exclusives or not.

I don't know, the Dreamcast is a great system, and my choice may change depending on my mood. Right now, i'm in a Mega Drive mood.

Oh please....

Dreamcast, for as long as it lived, had an incredible library. Which made it all the more painful to watch it die. I don't know if it's better than the Genesis, that's subjective, but I know for me I've gotten more enjoyment out of it than any other Sega system, and it wasn't because it was "hip" to enjoy it. It was (is) an amazing system in its own right.

I really wish I could participate in this poll but sadly I have never owned or played a Sega system. When I was younger my family always bought me Nintendo consoles so that's what I grew up with. By the time the Dreamcast was already dead I was entering 'hardcore gaming'. I should really pick up an old used console one of these days, or play my roommates Dreamcast. I love Sega as a publisher and would probably love their older contributions in the console race, except Sonic.. I hate Sonic.

While the dreamcast has a good library and while back in the day it was grossly overlooked I have to agree farrell. These days it's hip to praise the dreamcast. It was a good system, but I always felt it was the weakest of all 4 Sega Systems

Such garbage. Hip to love, hip to hate....this may apply for prepubescent children. But anyone with a inkling of maturity thinks for themselves.

I feel the Sega Genesis / Sega Mega Drive was the best Sega console. I like the library of video games for the console. I would have ranked the Sega Saturn as the second best, but I never even got a chance to play on a Sega Saturn.

The Dreamcast had a fantastic library, considering how long it was supported. It wasn't supported very long at all, though, and the Sega Genesis had a library that rivaled the Super Nintendo. I would go with the Genesis easily.

I really miss Sega.

Haha, I was hoping you would see this thread and reply! I know that you consider the SNES as one of your all time top systems (or, I think you do, please correct me if I am wrong!), so I wanted to see what you thought of its greatest arch rival, its nemesis, so to speak. I mean, the Genesis and the SNES were the first great console war after all :P I would have guessed the Genesis to be your favorite Sega system too.

But I do want to know, where did you stand on the Genesis vs SNES issue? Which one did you like more, what did you think of the Genesis individually (since I do know what your thoughts on SNES were)?

Reallly? I'm flattered.

Well, to answer:

SNES wins for me in that battle (Streetfighter was huge for me and SNES had the better multiplat lol, Final Fantasy, Mario, Zelda, Megaman X, Final Fight, Battletoads, Super Metroid, Capcom's X-Men Apocalypse, Super Castlevania 4, and many more), but I do love me some Genesis (Shining anything, Phantasy Star, Gunstar, Sega's X-Men 1/2, Streets of Rage, Castlevania Bloodlines, Battletoads, Shinobi III, Genesis Aladdin, Eternal Champions, Sonic, and also many more).

As Bill S. Socrates Jr. once said, "Genesis achieved what only Nintendo could only dream of...". While I admired my buddy Bill's gusto (which he ripped off from the famous commercials), I was in the NES and SNES camp. I did enjoy the SMS and Genesis though. I did play quite a few games as multiplats back then sometimes were really different...like Aladdin which I won't break down here because I would type too much, lol.

I think the Genesis helped a new generation of gamers see that Nintendo wasn't the only game in town, and when the SNES finally arrived, the battle was pretty epic. Sega did incredibly well with the older crowd and getting sports games (the COD market in a way). In fact, regarding sales the Sega Genesis was in the lead for a long time, it was that tale end support for SNES and killer games like Chrono Trigger and Donkey Kong that propelled the SNES over the top.

There was a time when Nintendo was the only game in town after Atari's screw ups. While I was a huge fan, Nintendo really sort of operated like a monopoly back then and gaming was frowned upon by people. It's strange today, as nerd culture is popular and in. Back in the day, you gamed in the closet, and found like minded people to talk about in dark corners, lol. Drawing Megaman levels, trading RPS secrets, or swapping Street Fighter combos, or whatever.

I won't go on and on, but there's a quickie, lol.

---

Donated for the thread and for younger gamers that never saw these Sega marketing commercials.

Gonna highjack your question for a sec. The SNES excells at platformers and RPGs, also has a handful of great shmups. The Genesis excells at shmups and action-side scrollers, also has a handful of great RPGs.

There is nothing on the SNES that comes even remotely close to the quality of Thunder Force IV, BattleMania Daiginjou, MUSHA, Alien Soldier, Gaiares, Gunstar Heroes and Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master. On the other hand, there is nothing on the Genesis that comes even remotely close to Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country 2, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, Terranigma and Super Metroid.

The SNES had better graphics and a slow ass processor. The Genesis had worse graphics and a blazing fast processor.

Unlike other consoles, these two complement each other so well, that saying which one is better is such a useless argument in this day and age, because they practically are two sides of the same coin. Combine both, and you pretty much got the best library of 2D games that has ever existed.

This is coming from a guy that never grew up with either.

Dreamcast was original in all aspects but some gamers weren't ready to take that leap so they just settled with the DVD player/PS2. If Sega was still in the game it would run circles around these new systems. Sega was way too far ahead of it's time. Unfortunately people are scared of change and that's what happened to Dreamcast. To this day they still had the best controller. Dreamcast wins by a long shot.
