I think turn based is a lot better for south park. real time is mostly for 5 year olds who fable is an rpg.

OH...MY...GOD!!!!! That was AWESOME. I forgot all about this game. Thanks for posting this. I sure hope it turns out to be as good as that video leads on to be.

It looks awesome, like Mario and Luigi or Paper Mario battles. So a cut above mere turn-based, imo. I'm sold.

looks excellent to me, I love a quality turn based, especially if it can give me a good laugh in the process!

That's ok by me. Looking forward to the game.

Turn based RPGs are real RPGs, not wannabe action game clones

South Park >>>>>>> Most real times RPG's just from that gameplay clip alone. Looks so f*ckin awesome. Shame about the delay :(

This was known since the first gameplay trailer.

Turn based combat is the best combat.

An old-school RPG is perfect for South Park, allowing the game to be crazy over-the-top and ridiculous without ever being a burden to players. It also allows a lot more dialog which is a strength of South Park. It also makes it easier to make the game a lot longer.

So glad it is coming to PC. I didn't want to have to buy an inferior version for console.

You are trying WAY WAY too hard kid. Drop it down a few notches and MAYBE then your sad ass troll attempts will start working out for you.

Nothing wrong with turn based games. Not everything needs to be oblivion with guns.

@ PurpleMan5000 "Turn based combat is the best combat."

For the lazy and reflex-ily challenged.

In combat I'l follow any rules they want except the "hold still while I attack you" method.

Taking turns is for P******* ! Lol, okay maybe I went alil too far.

Good. real-time rpgs are for impatient children who button mash, because they don't have the brainpower to be strategic.

I used to agree with this mindset, and usually at the beginning of games with turn-based combat, it does kind of suck. As you get a wider variety of skills and additional party members, though, it gets much better and much more challenging. Beat 'em ups are one of my favorite genres, but I have never played a real time RPG with good combat.

It's not the lack of words that killed it for you. It was the blatant obviousness of it that killed it. Well that and you being dead wrong didn't help either. I don't pirate games.

Do we have a release date yet?

Ofcourse, RPG Splicing taints whatever genre/element it splices with except for the old stuff.

For me its all about context, in card games its good, damn I loved Yugi-Yoh (actually its necessary, theres no such thing as real time card combat, but I'd like to see it be tried) but if its something more serious or if the context implies a hint of urgency then I prefer real time. Basicly for me its all about Ludonarritive Dissonance/Resonance, does that the type of combat I'm using feel right for this situation.

That gameplay video was amazing. I'm a massive South Park fan, and I am convinced this game seamlessly translates the show to a video game. It's literally like you're playing the show, which is what any good TV-game crossover should strive for.

The turn-based combat, which seems very inspired by the Mario and Luigi RPG series, is a perfect fit as well. This game went from being under my radar to possible 2014 RPG of the year.

Jimmy's stuttering and the "B to skip" prompt had me cracking up lol

There's room for both depending on the material. Turn-based combat can still be deep and satisfying, but I wouldn't expect many modern games today to use it. For a South Park game, however, I could not imagine real-time combat fitting well. Turn-based Mario and Luigi-style combat seems just ingenious as far as channeling the show is concerned.

Should be good. They've got Obsidian working on it, and they know how to put together an RPG.

keep in mind i'm not knocking turn-based combat. i just don't like people knocking real time combat, touting it as "childish" gameplay

That makes sense. You oversimplified things by equating turn based combat to "hold still while I attack you", though. There are games with good turn based combat and games with bad turn based combat. I just feel like turn based combat emphasizes diversity in your group (you usually need a healer, who you have to position in a way that minimizes the damage he/she takes, as well as ranged support). There are also some games, like Valkyria Chronicles, that are turn based but still require some degree of skill when it is your turn. Other games, like Dragon Age Origins and KOTOR are turn based, but play out in real time unless you pause the game, and let you move while you wait on the cooldown period to attack again.

Basically, if you are playing an RPG where you control a party of more than one character, it is almost impossible to make a good game that implements real time combat. Mass Effect probably does it best, but it plays more like a third person shooter with RPG elements.

Good to know they went with the superior RPG battle style.

hows this news? i saw footage forever ago that gave away it is a final fantasy parody.

it's looking great so far and i abandoned turn based rpgs as soon as technology made them obsolete.

#48 Posted by Icarian (1462 posts) -

My only hope is that the game will have some freedom. That gameplay was really linear.

This has never happened and never will.

How pretentious can you get. Let me guess the indie scene is too commercial and you only like Nivana's first album before they got "mainstream" haha.
