lol what happened to cows with all the LBP hype? "buh, buh, better than SMG2!". Quickly forgotten as it should be I suppose.

Anyways, Mario for me. I voted 3d since they happen to be on top with the last few games.

Not a platforming series, but one of my favorite platformers is Kid Chameleon. Favorite series would be Mario 2D and Rayman.

No Castlevania love? Seems like every game was a platformer back in the day.

Nothing's more innovative than 3D Mario prior to 3D World.

I never really considered CV to be a platformer. Yes, there is platforming, but it's not really the main focus. Same with old school Metroid, Contra, Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, etc..

Just like how today, you have plenty of jumping in games like God of War, Ninja Gaiden, DMC, Uncharted, etc. Some of these games even have full on platforming sections, but overall they aren't platformers and the light platforming that they do have doesn't really compare to games that are focused on it.

That's what happens when a developer builds a platformer around it's editor rather than it's core platforming mechanics.

Well, the whole point of the series IS the editor...

Doesn't mean it can't have even remotely decent platforming mechanics.

LBP Vita actually does this shit kinda smart and puts bounce pads everywhere among other things to mitigate the jumping being shit. It's easily the best LBP game (not saying much) and a pretty good platformer in its own right.

Does castlevania even count as a platformer? Anywho I picked J&D. Even though I played mario years ago he hasint done it for me since mario 64.

Mario and Donkey Kong Country.

I'll say Jazz Jackrabbit solely because it was blatantly left out of this list.

I think we're the only ones who remember it.

Shit was bananas when I was a kid. who would think these days that the guy who helmed Gears of War also did some glorious lovechild of Sonic and Megaman.

Looks like I'm not the only one who is currently obsessed with platforming games (old and new).

Mario. I don't even like Mario 64 and SMS but Mario would still win.

I only ever had the demo of the first game, but it was glorious.

Should probably try and get my hands on it now.

@foxhound_fox: Go for the second one. It's freeware these days and from what I gather, miles better.

Ape Escape series

Damn, not a single vote for Mega man yet. That surprises me.

2D sonic for me. I go back to the platformers of the day and they still shine through, as do the original 2D Marios. It's not hard to understand why these two were at the top of the game as opposed to Kid Chameleon et al.

I think the best pure 2D platformer I've ever played is Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

Modern day though, spelunky just does it for me. If that had come out in the old days I think it would be a bigger deal.

It doesn't surprise me. It's old and not an exclusive franchise, so it's not going to get any love on this site.

I just always thought it had a huge fan base on here. People here love the really hard games and Mega Man is famous for its challenge.
