The 3D Mario games have always been my favorite. I love 3D platformers, and the 3D Marios are some of the best. Super Mario 64 and the Galaxy games are some of my favorite games of all time.

Sonic the Hedgehog, ya know, before the games sucked. (Except for the brilliant Generations)

Why did you split Sonic and Mario into 2D and 3D? I don't differentiate them in my head like that...

Anyway, this is my top 10:

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog
  2. Mega Man
  3. NiGHTS
  4. Batman (Genesis)
  5. Rocket Knight
  6. Shinobi
  7. Metroid
  8. Super Mario
  9. Ristar
  10. Pulseman

If Gunstar Heroes counts as a platformer, I'd put it at #3 or #4. It's a very close call between it and NiGHTS.

I felt like since 2D and 3D platformers are separate sub-genres from each other, it was appropriate to separate the two since we see regular releases of both series that are either strictly 2D and 3D. For example, Mario still has a 2D series and a 3D series. Plus, there's a lot of people who prefer one type over the other and I want to see which type of Mario/Sonic is preferred.

Yeah, but for example, there are segments within Generations and SMG2 that are 2D. It switches back and forth within the same levels, and there are even dedicated 2D only stages as well. When the "3D games" interchange so much, I can't really differentiate both series based on that criteria. Different developers? Sure, but not on whether the games are supposed to be 2D or 3D.

What was wrong with it? I thought it was a really good game. Definitely not an "abhorrent piece of shit" anyway.

Franchise?

Mario in general. Way too long in the tooth, and one too many uninspired entries in his long run(any new super mario bros game, super mario 3d land), but Mario Bros, Mario Bros 3, Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Mario 64, The Galaxy games are all legit as ****. 3D World wasn't too shabby either.

@trugs26: I went into the game expecting something that's at least maybe 1/2 as good as 64 and was already acknowledging that it's an old game with a decisive gimmick.

What I played was a loosely controlled, poorly thought out, and flat out monotonous Mario game that felt like concept first and gameplay 294737th. The missions were dumb, the open world was boring, the camera controls couldn't be changed from inverted, and the level design was spectacularly awful. It is literally the only game I've ever played that I wished I had not played it and done something more fun like taking a drill to the eyeball.

Granted I only got a few hours before I pretty much felt it secured a spot in the three worst games I've ever played. On the other hand, SMG is amazing and the second is my second favorite game ever.

Hmm, yeah, that is true. Although, for some reason, Generations is defined as 3D on GameRankings and Metacritic, which I don't get. If I recall, a larger portion of the game was 2D since the 3D levels had 2D portions in them.

That, and Classic Sonic's zones are only 2D, meaning the game is predominately 2D based. Since Unleashed, 2D has become a major factor in the gameplay again, so I guess you can see my point. In regards to classification, I sort of feel the same way about NiGHTS since it's considered a 3D platformer even though it plays more like a 2D game in someways.

I'm actually surprised there's not more votes for Donkey Kong. And where are the Sony fans at? Their franchises only have a combined two votes.

Overall, Mario. In recent years 3D Mario. Between the Galaxy games and 3D World, 3d platformers have finally won me over. Of all time I'd say 2D Mario, but I include Yoshis Island in that. SMB3, SMW, Yoshis Island, all top tier games. Even the less inspired entries like the NSMB series are still rock solid.

If I had to pick just an individual game in recent years though, Super Meat Boy.

Gonna take the chance to highlight how awesome Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage was.

Man, those were the days. Really wish that game series hadn't gone to total sh*t (don't talk to me about Skylanders - it isn't the Spyro I asked for).

There are many good platformers put there, but 3d Mario is the only group of games that are just tops imo.

Overall, Mario has had too long a history of quality to be ignored.

However, Retro has recently put Donkey Kong Country on top with their last two games. They are in a league of their own in this genre at this point.

Unfortunately, I don't think so, but I can tell you what the current standings are:

  1. Super Mario (3D ones) - 43%
  2. Ratchet & Clank - 8%
  3. Super Mario (2D ones); Donkey Kong Country; Crash Bandicoot; Spyro; Jak & Daxter - 6%
  4. Castevania; Sonic the Hedgehog (2D ones); Shinobi; Gex; Banjo-Kazooie - 3%

Probably Mario simply because it's pure platforming and both 2D and 3D outings tend to be great. However, I really enjoy Kirby, Metroid and Castlevania along with Mario.

Sunshine is actually my favorite 3d Mario, love Isle Delfino and those water physics. It was such a refreshing setting from the normal mushroom kingdom backdrop they had up until that point.

For the best 2d platformer I've ever played it's definitely gotta be Yoshi's Island, such an amazing game.
