Poll What kind of gamer are you? (68 votes)

One who plays mostly for the gameplay, level design, and challenge 56%
One who plays mostly for the atmosphere, setting, and story 44%

I feel like there are two major camps for most players and I've decided to make a very bare bones poll to represent this.

If you HAD to absolutely choose between the two above sanctions, what would you pick? What aspects give you the most enjoyment out of a game? If you truly cannot decide, let's discuss.

I do enjoy a nice open world game that immerses me in a world I've always wanted to explore the way Red Dead and AC 4 have done. I've always wanted to experience the wild west and what it's like to be a pirate, but in the end I'm far more on the gameplay, level design, and challenge side of things. Give me a game with clever level design and a challenge that'll put hair on my chest and I'll be a happy camper.

I love the exploration and open worlds the most. I do enjoy the occasional rage quit too.

I honestly can't pick. I've had very satisfying experiences for both options. Whether I'm immersing myself in a game that presents itself well through atmosphere and setting, or one that provides a challenging, and fun experience.

I'm in the same boat and can't really choose. I rarely find games that find a decent middle ground (i.e. I haven't even considered touching TLOU) as I mostly stick to point and click adventures or shoot-em-ups and action titles. the last couple of titles I've played are battle garegga, mushihimesama futari, and broken age.

Gameplay, no doubt. I can sit through a mediocre story for fun gameplay, but I struggle with the opposite.

I don't want to be another who can't decide, because that's where I'm currently at, so I'd love to discuss to figure it out! :P

It pretty much comes down to the game clicking with me on these two levels: presentation and gameplay. I absolutely adore Red Dead Redemption and Uncharted 2, and the thing about those games is that although they focus so much on the presentation side of things I love the gameplay.

Then I have games like Pokémon, Super Mario 3D World (or any of them, really) and it's the gameplay and the experience each provides. Super Smash Bros and Borderlands, these games have fun gameplay while passing on getting you involved in a rich narrative.

To assist in figuring it out, below in the spoiler tags will be some of my favorite games:

  • Final Fantasy XII
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
  • Pokémon: HeartGold
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Super Mario Bros 3
  • Super Smash Bros Brawl
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

EDIT: I'll say that challenge doesn't mean very much to me; varies by game. If the game is easy but fun I'll love it (i.e. Kirby or Prince of Persia,) but if it's very difficult I lose interest quickly. I love the gameplay in Demon's Souls and would love an easier game with similar combat, but after hours of attempting to improve I just couldn't figure the game out.

I play for all those, but if I had to strictly choose, i'm more of a story/atmosphere kinda guy... That being said, if the gameplay is turd, I probably won't enjoy it.

It definitely varies on the game and how I'm feeling but I tend to lean more towards atmosphere, setting, and story.

I love how you can't enjoy both.

Anyway the gameplay. More importantly the interactivity(that doesn't necessarily mean challenge for instance). If the interactive aspects of the game are poor, the game is poor. There is no getting around that. The game fails at the one thing that makes this medium unique. If it fails that, what the **** is the point? An attempt at telling you a story in a passive manner? There are substantially better mediums for that.

Now games that actually tell their stories through game mechanics. Those are special.

Exploration is the most important part for me. A game in which you walk corridors in a straight line and kill enemies that spawn in front of you is what i disliked the most of all things (cod/bf kind of titles).

But I said in the OP that I do enjoy both, but rather one over the other. That's what this thread's about.

Also, I completely agree 100% with what you've said in the rest of your post. This medium is unique because of interactivity. Telling stories using the same methods of other mediums isn't going to push things further or get video games taken seriously by the general public. Why did Citizen Kane get praised as much as it did? Because it showed the unique story telling qualities that only film could produce.

I voted atmosphere, setting, and story if I had to choose, but ideally, I prefer a mix of

-level design, story, atmosphere, and gameplay. Such games I really enjoyed were bioshock and half life 2

It's the way you present the thread "what kind of gamer are you". Feels too much like funneling someone into a label. The question is more about if it came down to it, which of these can you tolerate: Shit gameplay or shit story. Plus there are plenty of other reasons for playing videogames.

On the one hand I appreciate good gameplay with a decent challenge and I hate mindless button-mashing, but on the other hand I don't care about overcoming ragingly difficult games to soothe my ego or for bragging rights. This old veteran gamer just wants to enjoy his time while gaming and be pleasantly entertained while doing it.

Story isn't super important because it's virtually impossible to tell a stellar one in this format. As long as it's decent and coherent, I'm happy with it most of the time.

I'd say atmosphere and level design is most important to me these days.

Also, why do I feel like this is another one of your undercover Uncharted 2 hate threads?lol

I love both Equally, although you can't have both simultaneously.

And As always. Cutscenes don't count as story (There goes 90% of JRPGs).

Gameplay and level design of course, but the story/atmosphere/music can make an average game seem great, like Nier.

An immersive atmosphere and world and interesting characters are the elements I enjoy most in video games. Decent gameplay is important of course and can really elevate a game from good to great.

I can't choose either or, I play based on motivation. For example a good and interesting story is motivating to keep on going even if the gameplay is repetitive ( Example grindy JRPG's ), however the story can be non-existent if the gameplay offers a fun challenge or at least something to look forward to while progressing. ( example the Souls games )

This is the reason why i can't enjoy sandbox games like GTA like other people do. GTA's Story is not really interesting in general, it's funny do most of the time so it's good for a laugh but not really motivating, and there's nothing to really look forward to from the gameplay. You start the game shooting at some one you'll end it shooting at someone.

Challenge mostly. I really love games where you can screw up in the first few hours but not realize you need to start over till much later. Large-scale TBS games such as the Civilization series for instance.

I also love realistic simulators because of their difficulty, be it flight sims or sub sims or what have you. I like esoteric games. That's one of the main reasons consoles are such a turn-off for me...all you have to do is keep playing and you're guaranteed to win eventually. Boo.

I read the topic title in the style of the song "What kind of Pokemon are you?", ie:

What kind of Gamer are you?
How do you do the things you do?
Share with me your secrets deep inside (... inside)
What kind of Gamer are you?
Are you loyal through and through?
Do you have a heart that's true?
What kind of Gamer are you?

Anyways, I'm there for gameplay.
