My friends, when people think of the best war book "War And Peace" tends to be at the forefront. Games have always been war heavy. But what is the best war game of them all? The closest personification of war distilled into a product sold as software?
To me, the answer is obviose. But then I think "console gamers probably haven't actually played this". And then I think "some people find strategy games boring". These people are assholes; obviously, but for the sake of parity, a word I learned today, they need to be taken into account.
What is the best war themed video game, on any platform?
No other WWII game captures the technological disparity between German versus Allied tanks and the early war German advantages.
The initial sticky bomb mission that forces you to sticky bomb the German tanks and emphasizes attacking the tanks' weaker rear portion brought home the futility and frustration of infantry versus technologically superior armor.
The battlefield's destructible environment only intensified the difficulty and potential strategies as panzers plowed through the potential "cover" of, reduced to rubble, buildings. No place was ever safe for long.
Wait a second did you just called people assholes because they dont have the same taste as you in games? I like strategy games but unlike you i wont go calling people out just because they dont like them . And to answer your question for me is between total annihilation, sins of a solar empire and batllefield series ( especially BF 2 and the desert combat mod for BF1942 )
For me my friends, the answer is obviously the "total War series, in particular "Shogun 2", a modern masterpiece that pushes gaming beyond simple entertainment.
While purists will point to paradox titles, these lack the character, immersion, budget and balance between accessibility and niche. These titles are stilted and sterile. They are simply not in the same class of execution. As a cohesive whole, Shogun 2 is a medium high point.
The series title "total" is not a buzzword. War is multifaceted, this game attempts to explore as many layers as possible both short term as well as the long term ramifications. It's emergent gameplay also does not demonize nor glorify but rather portrays war itself as a means to an end. With end ultimately, an ongoing unending cycle.
Religion, sex, food, money, bribery and fear. Anything useable as a tool to win, is implemented. An example would be the Geisha, a unit that can be used to seduce as well as kill generals, the serpent head of armies. Counter to that, they can be used to keep allegiance of your own generals, as well as raise general moral.
Ultimately, moral tends to be the deciding factor over kills. Kills are a byproduct shaped from events prior. Emphasis lays on not the kill itself but ensuring the events prior are favorable. This including genocide. The player can level cities to deny the enemy resources. In war, humans themselves are resources and are treated as such within the games core mechanics.
It's also a cinematic game. The idea of cinematic in recent years has essentially been, non interactive. People pointing to David Cage with his barely interactive QTE's. Or Last Of Us, praise primarily for being a movie than a game. Shogun 2 is cinematic on an epic scale doing the precise opposite of what these titles do, interactivity.
While gaming has been seen to trivialize war and even use it as a tool to recruit. Total War is far more earnest and far more sophisticated, without being overwhelming or denying entertainment to the casual user. Something intelligent yet easily comprehensible. It's the kind of game the consumer as well as the industry can be proud of.
Most interesting? Valiant Hearts: The Great War. Would like to see another game in that vein, but a bit more serious business. That was a refreshing experience this year, and it came from Ubisoft no less (the one talented team at Ubisoft)

if by war, you mean modern warfare military themed war, then here are my picks
- this gen -
Single player: nothing special so far
Multiplayer: Battlefield 4
- Last gen -
Single player: Tom Clancy's Advance Warfighter
Multiplayer: Battlefield 3
- Xbox1 / PS2 era -
Single player: Full Spectrum Warrior
Multiplayer: can't think of any (my memory is fuzzy about that era).
Battlefield 2, 1942, Call of Duty: United Offensive, Ghost Recon, etc
But props on the Full Spectrum Warrior, game was awesome as ****.
These are some seriously awesome picks you have. Especially the original Ghost Recon, I really enjoyed that game so much. It actually introduced me to the whole Tom Clancy franchise.
Because of it, I picked up Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 which ended up being one of my top favorite tactical shooters.
The closest modern spiritual successor to Ghost Recon is perhaps Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising.
That's hard. But the one I played the most and had the most fun with was Call of Duty 4 with Modern Warfare 2 close behind it.

Halo pretty much does it for me during the xbox / PS2 era. Socom was pretty good too.
I really wish I had the chance to play SOCOM back in the day as it looked really interesting. I wish Sony brings back the franchise to PS4 so I could try it.

I actually dislike Ghost Recon, I just assumed it would have been up your alley given you like Advanced Warfighter ;p
But yeah man Operation Flashpoint in general was dope, Red Orchestra before the latest one, Raven Shield forever the goat Rainbow Six game.
I know the GDI and Nod aren't "real", but c'mooooooon. We all know that was the Americans and the Russians, and we all know that's how the Cold War really happened.

We were soldiers once, and young-Daniel Abraham
The Great War---Peter Hart
Faith of our Fathers---N.C.Allen are all great war books, many would argue = to War and Peace. Although W&P is the go to character manifesto. "War" game is pretty tough so I say great question and hopefully thread. Are we talking historically? As in War that has taken place? Or is the ISA vs Vektan war or Human vs Covenant war applicable?

haha, good guess man! I really loved Ghost Recon & Advanced Warfighter.
Despite the graphical & physics engine superiority of modern military shooters like Battlefield & CoD, I really dislike the overly scripted nature of their single player campaigns.
Seems only Ubisoft is able to get the single player right when it comes to game mechanics. Splinter Cell Black List was such a delight last year that I wish I see more of the same gameplay mechanics adopted in future Ghost Recon installments.
It is a highly skilled-based game that requires vast knowledge of potential tanks you face and their specifications. It's not a sim, but it's damn good and damn addictive.

The closest modern spiritual successor to Ghost Recon is perhaps Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising.
Dragon Rising is complete HORSESHIT compared to the real Operation Flashpoint....Cold War Crisis and the Resistance expansion. (the best war game ever...FPS sp campaign wise)
The successor is the Arma games, btw. (same devs as OFP:CWC....not Codemasters who did Dragon Rising, but should of stuck with racing games)

Aside of CoH 1, all the FPS's just depict a American GI will a mystical taste for bullets.
You should go play some Red Orchestra 2.

It's a shame about the sequel...
What about the sequel? Its really damn good, especially after they added battleservers which drastically reduced lag in multiplayer and added the Western Front Armies. The campaign was nothing special I'll give you that but the multiplayer is fricken fantastic.
Anyways my vote would be split between Company of Heroes 1 (since it had a better campaign), Red Orchestra 2 and Medal of Honor Allied Assault. Those games are too different for one to be classified as better than the others.

This is a pretty vague question, don't you think? Personification of war? In what sense? The emotional toll it bears on those who endure it? The strategy of those who implement it?

I haven't tried the earlier installments of Operation Flashpoint, but Dragon Rising was really good, give it a try, I'm positive you'll like it. It was so memorable to me & had amazing graphics. Doing moderate difficulty missions in dynamic overcast / sunny weather on open large grass fields was so relaxing.
Arma 3 I've yet to play. I purchased it on one of steam sales, and will hopefully set some time off work to try it.
@Mystery_Writer: Have it. See.. the big problem.. and what makes and breaks these games...and where the original really shined....is the enemy AI.
Dumb as rocks in Dragon Rising they are. You would engage 4 at distance, that were in an open field say and what would they do ? Go prone and start spinning. LOL.. At a good distance you could sit there and pick them off one after the other easily without having to worry about anything. The AI was so broken, I couldn't even take the long range guns with scopes, ect...cause it was no challenge whatsoever. But once you got a little closer the AI actually got more dangerous, so I was basically forced to only take weapons with iron sites & sneak in a lot closer to make it any kind of fun..(Which is the best and only way to play this game, as far as I'm concerned)
But if you got too close though...they would go completely retarded and not even shoot you or recognize you, if you were like 3 feet in front of their face. LOL..I'm dead serious. They would be completely gltchin'.. haha...It was sad though.
That shit didn't fly in the original. You would have to keep that head down at long range otherwise it would get popped by a tiny pixel in the distance ! Complete different feel and not even in the same league. I play all these games on the hardest difficulty btw, Because it just removes the on screen helpers only (direction of fire indicators, ect...) It doesn't change bullet damages, enemy amounts/placement/ai ... or anything like that.
Get this....in Dragon Rising when you play on the hardest difficulty, it still shows the enemies as red dots when you go to the map. And This is supposed to be a Flashpoint game ?
In the Cold War Crisis/Elite (was for Xbawks too actually ) it didn't even show your position when you went to the map, forget about the enemies ! Gotta get gud with those compass and landmark recognition skillz !
It's a shame Bohemia never came close to equaling that from a sp standpoint, as the the successive Arma games campaigns weren't nearly as good.
On another note, anybody play Vietcong ? Heard this one was pretty good and thought it would go well with a little Rambo double feature ! Always wanted to play a cool Vietnam game, but what few them there were, seemed to kinda suck from what I remember.
Are you looking for a shooter game that takes place during a war, or a strategy game that lets you build and command an army? because those are two different things.
